About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Warm November Weather Continues Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 7, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 7, 2017

The warm weather continues making today’s bike ride feel more like summer. This will probably end later today when the front passes through. The route for today’s ride: “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” for a total of 33.6 miles. November now totals 170 miles, 190 more to reach my goal, and YTD I am at 6991 miles, 430 more to hit that goal.

Weather during the ride: 81 degrees at the 10:33 AM start, 79% humidity, mostly cloudy sky; 85 degrees at 12:57 PM finish, 66% humidity, mostly cloud sky, SW wind at 7 mph.

When I stopped at the Pinehurst Trail Drive and FM 1960 traffic light a red SUV pulled up in the left turn lane (I was going straight) and as the light changed I saw a bike on a bumper rack. I wondered if I would see the cyclist at the church on Fairlake Drive south of FM 1960 and I did. He was getting ready to ride as I went by and we exchanged waves. Not long after that a lady cyclist passed me going north on Fairlake Drive. I almost didn’t see her because my head was down riding into the wind.

Some road construction on the route at Pinehurst Trail Drive north and south of FM 1960. I noticed markings on the road indicating possible panel replacement and now it is happening. There a couple places marked that don’t look that bad and some that look bad and are not marked. Maybe the problems are below the surface. Atascocita Shoires Drive has some rough spots but no markings there yet.

No rest stop today. I was hurrying to get back home for a Fedex delivery and I didn’t need to refill my water bottle.

With the front moving through later today I may not ride tomorrow because of cooler temperatures. I am in a good position goal wise.

The Dallas Bike Ride Was Great (Unless You Were Driving a Car)

By Tim Rogers | www.dmagazine.com

On Saturday I took part in the first annual Dallas Bike Ride, along with about 3,000 other riders. I am declaring the event a huge success, with two caveats.
First, the good stuff: the 20-mile ride began and ended at City Hall. Especially considering this was the events inaugural year, I found the whole thing well-organized and a pleasure to participate in. My group of four riders all agreed that we plan to do it again next year, the main reason being that it is so dang fun to ride on Dallas city streets that have been cleared of cars. Thats the big selling point of …

Surprise Encounter at Stripes Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 6, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 6, 2017

Central Standard Time has returned. It was daylight earlier today and I started the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” bike ride earlier than usual at 10:16 AM. By then the summer like weather had warmed to 82 degrees (78% humidity) under a partly cloudy sky. No need for a long sleeve jersey on this bike ride so shorts and a short sleeve jersey were the attire. The wind was from the SW at 9 mph (or higher) pushing me to Roman Blvd. with less effort than I expected. The loop through Roman Forest was generally wind neutral so I rode at a good pace.

Once I was back to I-69/US59 for the ride back to Kingwood the headwind battled me most of the way.

The stop at the Stripes station at FM 1314 was long enough to refill my water bottle and walk out the back door. As I came out the door a man followed and asked me about my Stradalli. He knew a lot about the bike and we chatted a few minutes. I was surprised to have someone out of the blue talking about my bike. I got back on the Stradalli and headed to Briar Tree, Oakhurst and back to Kingwood.

Riding through Kingwood I had a tailwind most of the way. I finished the bike ride at 1:21 PM. The temperature was 87 (61% humidity) which is hot for November. Several records were set over the weekend in Houston. The weather forecast calls for a cool front Tuesday afternoon so I will need to ride early.

I adjusted my goal for the month to 360 miles, what I rode last November. As of this ride I am at 137 miles for the month.
