About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Ride Down the Highway 71 Bike Path [PICS]

Austin On A Bike | medium.com

This weekend, I got to do a lot of bike infrastructure exploration. In addition to getting a sneak peek into the new Shoal Creek / Hike & Bike Trail connector, I took a long ride on Saturday to check out the bike path I’ve seen running alongside Highway 71 out to Bastrop.
Right now, getting to the rail by bike is not for the inexperienced or faint of heart. I crossed at 183 and cut down a side road and came out at 183. I was …

Celebrating 10 years of The Bike Cave

By Diana Furman | star.txstate.edu

Ten years ago a 140-square foot garage opened its doors to the San Marcos community and started The Bike Cave. Owned and operated by students, it has proven the lasting impact one group of concerned self-starters can have on campus.
Matt Akins, Taylor Powell and Daniel Palomo cofounded The Bike Cave in 2007, simply as students who sought an alternative transportation method in San Marcos. Auxiliary Services, now Parking and Transportation, took the shop under its …

Blue Sky, Cool Temperature Gorgeous Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2017 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2017

What a gorgeous day! The cool front passed through yesterday with rain and cooler temperatures. I did not bike then but today I rode the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. When I got up this morning it was a chilly 48 outside but by the time I left at 11:33 AM it was 71. The wardrobe choice: shorts (2nd pair of warranty replacement Bellwether Endurance Gel), long sleeve thermal jersey and a short sleeve jersey. The bright sun felt great but in the shade it was a little cool until I warmed up. Wind was not an issue from the NW at 5 mph at the end of the ride (2:01 PM).

Riding north the front side of me was cool since it was hidden from the sun. At Community Drive and Loop 494 I caught a oversized load moving north on Loop 494. Traffic was backed up as the truck maneuvered under the low hanging traffic lights at some intersections. Once I got on 494 I followed then convoy to the I-69/US59 service road south of Roman Forest Blvd. where they moved to the freeway, slowing traffic there.

Making the turn south the wind aided me as I improved my overall average speed to 14.8 mph and overall average watts to 98 even hitting 101 at times.

I finished the ride with the temperature up to 76 and the humidity a very 37%. Cool weather will hang around with another front later this week.

With today’s ride I am 124 miles away from my 6,800 goal by the end of October.

Tired of traffic? Try one of these unusual commutes instead

by Pam LeBlanc | www.mystatesman.com

Austin workers use paddleboards, mountain bikes, inline skates or their own two feet to get to work

Why sit in traffic when you can catch a workout on your commute to work?
We checked in with a quartet of Austin residents who park the car at home now and then or skip the bus and travel to work under the power of their own muscles.
We’re pretty sure they arrive at the office in a better frame of mind than those who sit in gridlock traffic on Interstate 35 or MoPac Boulevard. Plus, they don’t have to make an extra trip to the gym, because they’ve …

A Sneak Peek of the Shoal Creek / Hike & Bike Trail Connector [PICS]

Austin On A Bike | medium.com

The new central library in Austin is set to finally open next week, as is the path that takes pedestrians and cyclists under Cesar Chavez and connects to the old train bridge over Shoal Creek from West to Rio Grande. The trail has been closed in this section for years now and is set to open with the library next week. We got to go take a closer look today, so I wanted to share some pics. Here it is, close up: …

Cold front brings brief but heavy rain; sunshine, milder temps ahead

By Mary Huber | www.mystatesman.com

Bicycle riders participating in the 2017 Livestrong Challenge negotiate rain slick roads through downtown Austin on Sunday as early thunderstorms made conditions slippery. The riders from around the country chose 20-, 45-, 65- or 100-mile bike rides to raise money to reach the fundraising goal of $1 million to benefit the Cancer Institutes of the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas. After the ride, participants enjoyed local food and beer, music and vendors. RALPH BARRERA /AMERICAN-STATESMAN …

Clear, cool weather allows thousands to roll through Broadway at Síclovía

By Jasper Scherer | www.mysanantonio.com

Some bikers sped down Broadway wearing skin-tight cycling jerseys and black compression shorts, their faces and bodies damp with sweat. Others leisurely pedaled as their collared shirts and cargo pants rippled with the breeze.
On some bikes, corgis, terriers and other small dogs rode in mesh baskets as their owners chauffeured them down the San Antonio thoroughfare.
An estimated …

Cycling should be encouraged

By Tristan Hienen | www.dailytexanonline.com

The Texan’s 10/12 piece “Cyclists Don’t Often Follow Rules of Road” misstates rules of the road. Despite certain UTPD officer’s progressive stance to allow cyclists to roll through intersections on their turn, Officer Moore critically misstates the Texas Transportation Code Ann. §551.103.
