About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A taste of fall weather bicycle ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 10, 2017 by Rick AnkrumOctober 10, 2017

A taste of fall weather arrived this morning cooling things down a few degrees. It was enough for me to wear a long sleeve jersey and be glad with the strong north wind: 13 mph with 22 mph gusts. The first 19 miles on the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route generally was with a tailwind which made for easier pedaling. I biked 32.9 miles without taking a rest stop since I wasn’t overheating. I didn’t drink as much water as I should either. At the 10:47 AM start it was 73 degrees and when I finished at 1:12 PM it was 78. It has been awhile since the temperature range has been like this.

After turning onto Fairlake Drive as I passed the church I saw several cars parked with some women cyclists standing around. One lady looked my way and we exchanged waves. They probably finished their ride before I got there.

Bicycling north on FM 2100 I could tell the ride back home would require more effort with the wind buffeting me whenever I came out from behind wind breaks like trees and buildings. The toughest part was riding west on FM 1960 over Lake Houston without anything to block the wind. West bound traffic helped some by sucking the wind with them as they passed.

My best segment efforts according to Strava.com

Tomorrow (Wednesday) warm weather returns and I should be out in it.

BU head coach pays a visit to the Bush ranch

By Julie Hays | www.kwtx.com

CRAWFORD, Texas (KWTX) Baylor head football coach Matt Rhule got a chance to spend some time with former President George W. Bush at his Central Texas ranch over the weekend.
Rhule was invited as a guest to the Bush’s annual W100 bike ride for wounded veterans on Saturday at the ranch outside of Crawford.
Before the group of 52 riders took off with their former commander in chief, Rhule got a chance to shake the former president’s hand and snap a picture.
The New York City native, who spent most of …

2017 Dragonslayer – Rider Reports

Tree Magnet | www.bikemojo.com

Thought future Dragonslayers might appreciate not having to filter through 6 pages to read a few ride reports. I have a lot to say and all I plan on doing today is sitting on a very, very soft pillow so I’ll write a short and long report. First my info to set the stage:
Rider: 44 year old who came to mountain biking in my 30s as an outlet to survive raising 3 kids. More City Park/BCGB than Walnut but as long as I’m on dirt (rocks), I’m cool.
Bike: Santa Cruz Nomad – 160 mm up front and out back – Same bike I took to Winter Park in August and shredded Rainmaker over a dozen times. Just adjusted the shock pressure, softened up the rebound, and swapped the Ardent to the back and moved the High Roller II to the front.
Ultra experience:5 time EB finisher, 1 twelve hour race with a team, and a Cranksgiving or 2.
Hydration/nutrition set up:2 L bladder (1/2 full) of water, 1 L bladder with V fuel. Started on water and switched to V fuel after 2 hours. Rotated back to straight water and V fuel was gone (2 hours). Ate cliff shots and V fuel gel when drinking water and switched to real food (kind bar, peanut butter) when on V fuel.
Result: …

Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pie Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 9, 2017 by Rick AnkrumOctober 9, 2017

Summer refuses to leave but that is okay. Today’s bike ride went north on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. The start temperature was 85 at 10:42 AM and the finish temperature 91 at 1:44 PM with humidity at 63% and the wind 4 mph. No other cyclists along the route.

I rode smoothly along the route getting the overall average up to 15.0 mph stopping at the Valero station on FM 1314 at Sorters Road 25.4 miles into the ride. The picture below shows all of the firewood stacked up and the big sing for the pumpkin spice whoopie pie. I didn’t buy the whoopie pie but instead bought an orange Gatorade to carry me to the finish. A different form of sugar. I found out it takes about 15 minutes to drink a 32 oz cold Gatorade without getting a brain freeze which I almost did at first sip.

Bike Ride Valero FM1314

Once I was back in Kingwood I had to detour along Kingwood Drive where the workers are replacing the greenbelt. I will need to avoid the area for a few days.

Tomorrow a cool front may pass through keeping the temperature in the 80″s but probably no rain. I am at 6,304 miles YTD leaving 500 miles to get to my 6,800 mile goal by the end of October. I should go biking on Tuesday to get closer to my goal. So far I rode 221 miles this month.

George W. Bush hosts Central Texas bike ride for wounded vets

By Rhyan Henson | www.kwtx.com

CRAWFORD, Tx. Former President George W. Bush hosted his seventh annual W100k Saturday morning at his ranch outside of Crawford.
Although it has been nearly a decade since Bush has been president, he rides every year to bring wounded veterans together for support.
He started the annual bike ride in 2011 to showcase the courage, commitment and resilience of the injured warriors.
“You hear thank you for your service and you come out here and truly see how many people haven’t forgotten about us,” Peter Way, a veteran said.
Way was injured in 2003 while serving in Afghanistan.
A few years later he …

With about 15 years of bicycle commuting experience under my helmet, I’ve had my share of encounters with grumpy drivers, including a guy who raced up next to me before sunrise and yelled that I needed to grow up and get a car.

What She Said Fueled My Passion.

What a journey! As they say, time flies when you’re having fun. When I started with Bike Austin in April, 2015 I was (still am) passionate about how infrastructure plays such an important role in our health as it creates pathways to healthy food, healthcare, school and work. This is why Bike Austin’s role is so important.
Step into my (cycling) shoes for a moment: A few weeks ago I went for a ride with my daughter, Sulema. Now that she’s a little older we rode from our place (Riverside/Pleasant Valley area) to see bicycle art (Ai Weiwei) and from there we went to the capitol building. She saw the protected bike facilities for the first time in the downtown area which also have bike …
