About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Vintage Mountain Bike Racing

Johnny Guzman | bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

Mountain bikes have been around since the late 70’s and mass produced since the mid 80’s. Therefore, it’s fair to say that some of those early mountain bikes can now be considered classics. Lately, people are reminiscing about all things 90’s. Even mom jeans tried to make a short lived comeback. What’s next, acid washed jeans, neon and the like? One cool trend that I have been noticing, at least in the world of mountain biking, is an appreciation for old school …

Trials and Tribulations Ended Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 5, 2017 by Rick AnkrumOctober 5, 2017

Today’s bike ride went on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 34.5 miles. I left at 10:35 AM and finished at 1:04 PM.

Motivating me during the ride was the anticipated arrival of my replacement phone from Google. It has been almost a month since contacted them and got an RMA for my Nexus 6P. After many trial and tribulations the replacement Pixel XL shipped on Tuesday and was scheduled to be delivered today. According to the carrier it could be delivered as late as 8 PM tonight but while I was biking they delivered it. My wife put it on the kitchen counter to await my return although she told me she thought about hiding it but then changed her mind due to all of the trouble I had getting it here. Bless her!!!

While bicycling through Tavola rather than take the usual circle back to Roman Forest Blvd. I decided to follow the new streets west of the community center and pool. I though the streets would end not too far past there but was surprised to see how far they went back almost to the railroad tracks. I saw a lonely model home in a new section and some workers getting a foundation ready for another house. I rode past a pond with trails and pretty landscaping. I thought about taking a picture but didn’t. Finishing exploring I rode back to the loop I normally ride and then Roman Forest Blvd.

Bicycling what I call fall weather was pleasant. The temperature at the start was 83 (75% humidity) and 85 (61% humidity) at the finish. A partly cloudy sky with patches of blue kept the sun from warming me too much though I did perspire. Wind was from the east at 8 mph.

Bicycling south from Roman Forest Blvd. the wind helped me keep a steady pace at 18 to 20 mph and hasten my return home. No rest stop today in order to not add to the time I was gone plus with the pleasant weather I didn’t need any additional water. I was early enough to miss any school traffic.

Year to date I am at 6,200 miles, 117 miles for October. I would like to be at 6,800 miles by the end of the month. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

Fourth annual Park to Port bike ride is this Saturday

By Rebecca Hazen | www.chron.com

Hermann Park’s fourth annual Park to Port 20-mile round-trip bike ride will be this Saturday, Oct. 7.
The event was originally created in 2014 as a part of Hermann Park’s centennial campaign.
“2014 also happened to be the Port of Houston’s centennial year and the Houston Parks Board were in the early phases of building out the Bayou Greenways 2020 initiative, so it was a perfect time for us all to come together to plan an event that celebrated the Park, the Bayou Greenway trails and the Port,” said Hermann Park Conservatory President Doreen Stoller. “It …

Dry Fall Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 4, 2017 by Rick AnkrumOctober 4, 2017

It rained most of yesterday so no bike ride but the weather today was much better. I left home at 10;41 AM riding the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. The temperature was 81 (79% humidity) with mostly cloudy sky and an east wind at 10 mph. My goal was to ride at least 32 miles and I succeeded coming in at 33.6 miles.

Nothing unusual on today’s ride and the replacement tube in the rear tire from Monday’s flat is holding pressure perfectly. I am thinking the piece of glass that caused the flat made a very slow leak before the tire went flat. I saw a couple of other bikers and when I rode past the church on Fairlake Drive three cars with bike racks were parked there. The owners must have been riding east of FM 2100.

A quick stop at the Huffman Chevron for ice and water was the only break today. After that I was back on the bike headed back to Kingwood to finish the ride. I pushed the stop button on the Elemnt computer at 1:11 PM. During the ride I found that the latest update to the Elemnt added the lap notification back. I missed it. The temperature at the finish was 85 with 74% humidity. The daily high will probably not get into the 90’s any more this year unless there is a heat wave.

More good weather on Thursday and I plan on riding.
