About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

KHS Sidewalk Finished, FM 1960 Orange Barrels Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 22, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 22, 2017

As promised the weather reverted to late summer conditions although this evening fall arrives. I chose the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route heading south and east planning on riding at least 40 miles. I ended up biking 41.4 miles, the longest ride this week. In my quest to reach 6,000 miles for the year by September 30th I am now 149 miles away. I think I can do it!!

The ride started at 10:59 AM under a partly cloudy sky, 87 degrees and 75% humidity. With the humidity that high the temperature didn’t feel that hot but it wasn’t long before perspiration was flowing. The wind was from the SE at 12 mph for most of the ride meaning I had headwind for the majority of the ride. My legs were able to power the pedals in a satisfactory level so that I rode at 15 to 18 mph most of the time. I don’t remember having a problem with the headwind but I sure did enjoy the tailwind when I had it.

Typically on this route I stop at the May Community Center to refill my water bottle but today I skipped that intending to take a long rest break at the Huffman Chevron station. I hoped they fixed the broken fountain beverage machine because I wanted to drink a blue PowerAde along with the two fruit and grain bars I brought. Arriving at the Chevron station at the 29.2 mile point (1:08 PM) I was ready for a rest but this also meant I should ride more than 40 miles by the finish. Walking inside the store I saw the fountain machine was back in service, filled a cup and went back outside. Sitting in the shade the breeze cooled me and dried out my jersey some. After about 35 minutes I got back on the bike and headed west on FM 1960.

Approaching Atascocita Shores Drive the shoulder was blocked with a bunch of orange barrels causing me to stop on the shoulder and wait for an opening in the traffic to ride around them to make the right turn. There was a new sign warning of road work ahead before I got to the barrels but unless they are working underground no work was visible. There is a project to widen FM 1960 from the west end of the causeway for several miles, I guess they are getting ready to start. This shouldn’t make me change my route since I don’t’ ride on FM 1960 but for a few hundred feet on the west side of the lake.

Earlier I was please to see the sidewalk replacement in front of Kingwood High School beside the west bound lanes is finished so I can resume biking there instead of using the eastbound sidewalk which requires me to sit through a traffic light.

Finishing the ride at 2:36 PM put me in front of the Elm Grove Elementary school traffic. With Kingwood High School closed due to Hurricane Harvey flooding traffic there is not an issue. The high school may be closed for the school year. I saw many trucks and workers as I rode by the high school.

More great weather tomorrow and I plan on riding.

Parking On Designated Bike Lanes… What’s Up With That?

bikehouston.org

“Sure this is a bike lane, but it’s cool. You can still park in it.” – The City of Houston. Ok, that’s not really an exact quote, but it’s what one can gather when there is no State Law that prohibits it or any City Ordinance against it. Just take a drive down to 1901 Cullen Blvd (around the new apartment complex), Polk St (around Hutchings), and Waugh Dr (by The Flat) so you can see what we’re talking about. Those are just a few examples of this headscratcher of a problem we have here. We build a bike lane to allow cyclists to move in traffic, but we also …

Better Legs with 85% Humidity Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 21, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 21, 2017

Originally I planned on riding south and to the east until around 10 AM it rained about .12″ . I looked at the weather radar and patches of rain covered the area south of where I would ride. So I waited for the streets to dry off some and chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route to the north. I left at 1:02 PM which is a winter start time. The sky was overcast from what I could see at home among the trees but some blue was visible to the north. As I rode west to exit Kingwood the sky to the south and west was dark making me wonder if I would get wet before I got back home.

Arriving at the I-69/US59 north bound service road the south 12 mph wind propelled me to the SH 242 turn around point. I could tell my legs and power were much better than yesterday as I kept my speed at 18 to 19 mph. I was concerned about the ride south though. That same wind would try to slow me down. Surprisingly my legs had the energy to not only hold my speed but I improved my overall average speed to 15.3 mph for a segment before settling at 15.2 mph.

The Valero station on Northpark Drive and I-69/US59 offered an opportunity for a short rest and time to return a phone call I got south of FM 1314. My intent was to buy an apple fritter to eat and use the the sugar to energize me for the final stretch to the finish but they didn’t have any. The stop was short and I rode south.

With the rain and overcast sky the temperature was much cooler than normal at 80 degrees but the humidity was strong 85% which explained why I was dripping in perspiration. While I was standing at the Valero station my arms dripped steadily leaving the concrete wet. My concern about rain returned as a few rain drops hit me as I rode toward Kingwood Drive but that was all that fell.

Making my way through the Kings Manor school traffic I rode a shorter way to get into Kingwood. The next challenge was the Bear Branch Elementary school which was about to let out as I biked by. From there it was about a mile to the finish. I stopped the ride at 3;27 PM. The sky was not quite as dark but the weather radar still showed rain activity in the area. I was glad to be home wet from sweat and not from the rain.

With the 32.2 miles for today I need 191 miles to reach the 6,000 YTD total by the end of September. The weather should be dry and warmer tomorrow for bicycling.

We had just gotten those before all of this happened,’” said Mayfield, in Texas all the way from Alabama. “And my heart just sank and she …
