About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Beautiful Sunday Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 17, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 17, 2017

I rode the Blue Norcross AL on today’s bike ride on the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” course for a total of 27 miles. With those miles the total for the week was 244.4 miles, just .5 of a mile short of the equaling the most miles for a week this year. Maybe I should’ve lapped the block a couple of times to break that record. I now need 287 miles the rest of September to reach 6,000 for the year. Once I reach that level I should be able to ride 7,000+ miles by the end of the year.

The ride started late (12:44 PM) because I worked on my wife’s email program to fix a problem and after church. By then the temperature was 91 with 65% humidity but the wind was calm which was nice in a way except for drying up sweat whenever I stopped. The sky was mostly cloudy. I finished the ride at 2:50 PM and there wasn’t any change in the weather.

Making a quick stop at the Valley Ranch Texaco to refill my water bottle was it for today. A photo before I got back on the bike.

9-17-2017 Valley Ranch-2

The building has had several fast food restaurants but all have closed. Today as I was riding out of the parking lot there was a sign saying “Coming Soon – Dickey’s BBQ”. They also had a sign on the door to hire workers for the restaurant. Maybe this one will survive?

Leaving the Texaco station I rode south along I-69/US59 on the service road to Northpark Drive. I rode north and then east through Woodridge Forest and then into Kingwood to finish the ride.

No bike ride tomorrow (Monday) but I should be back biking on Tuesday.

How bikes are helping Houstonians after Harvey

Leah Binkovitz | www.houstonchronicle.com

Before Harvey made its way to Houston, dumping unprecedented amounts of rain on the city, Carter Stern, executive director of the city’s B-Cycle program, told the technicians who usually service the bike-share stations to take the storm off.
Roughly half run on solar panels, with a battery charge that can last 24 hours without sunlight. Without service over the weekend, they’d likely be unusable. …

Riders Conquer the Coast in event’s 14th year, just weeks after Hurricane Harvey affects area

Tim Acosta | www.caller.com

As the first batch of riders crossed finish line on Saturday, cyclists Sidney Flores and John Gaspar moved nearby and enjoyed a good laugh among friends and fellow participants in this year’s Conquer the Coast.
The duo, like others in their group, wore white cycling jerseys with “Philippines” on the sleeves. Flores, 49, immigrated to the United States in 1994, settling in Corpus Christi after getting married. He and fellow Filipino residents have taken up …

Cyclists leave the starting gate Saturday morning for the Ninth Annual Hale on Wheels Bicycle Race, the opening event of the 19th annual Cowboy Days Celebration in Plainview. Other Cowboy Days events included a parade, live music, vendors, petting zoo, free pictures with Ralph Fisher’s World Famous Trained Texas Longhorns and …

Early Start, Other Cyclists Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 16, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 16, 2017

I wasn’t sure if I would see any other bicyclists on to day’s bike ride but I started earlier than I usually at 9:27 AM but I did. The first ones were in Kingwood and continued Until I got to FM 2100. Overall I probably saw 20 to 25 cyclists as I rode the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route for a total of 30 miles. I now am up to 217 miles for the week with 314 miles left to reach 6,000 miles YTD.

Starting earlier the weather was nice but the humidity was a stout 88% and 78 degrees. I was sweating heavily and should’ve wore wrist bands to hold it back from my hands.

The only stop was at the Huffman Chevron to refill my water bottle. I didn’t stay but a few minutes. This 16.2 miles into the ride. I finished the ride at 11:45 AM. The humidity let up some to 65% and 89 degrees.

More great weather tomorrow so I plan on biking after church.

One small trail for North Austin, one giant loop for the whole city

by Caleb Pritchard | www.austinmonitor.com

Last year, Mayor Steve Adler declared in his State of the City address that great cities do big things, a message that the Shoal Creek Conservancy apparently took to heart.
On Wednesday evening at a community workshop in Central Austin, the group officially debuted its vision for the Big Loop, a 30-mile circular system of existing and future urban trails.
The concept would allow cyclists to ride on the Shoal Creek Trail from downtown to connect to the Walnut Creek Trail at the Domain. Heading east from there, the route eventually bends southward and would ultimately connect to the Lance Armstrong Bikeway, which pushes west …

British volunteer helps around town

By Christopher James | baytownsun.com

Southern hospitality can be contagious.
Just ask Englishman Daley Parsons who has been helping victims of Harvey in Baytown for the last two weeks.
At the time when Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast, Parsons was actually in Del Norte, Colorado camping with a friend, living off the grid for a few weeks. When he got back to civilization he saw the news. …

… The Englishman was hitchhiking nearly 1,000 miles from Colorado because he lives his life on the road with just a bicycle, tent and cooking supplies. In fact, for the last four years, Parsons has traveled across the globe with his bicycle and small amount of supplies. He’s been to parts of Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia where he finds jobs to support his trip. …

Bike registration to be required at Texas A&M

By Blakeley Galbraith | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) – Starting Nov. 1, bicyclists on the Texas A&M campus will be required to register their bikes with the university – and after the Nov. 1 deadline, the registration costs will increase.
Some students say they are happy a registration will be implemented since they have trouble finding bike parking.

Texas and Florida Mountain Bike Trails Devastated by Hurricanes, Need Your Help

by Jeff Barber | www.singletracks.com

With back-to-back Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hitting the US mainland, the amount of destruction on the ground is difficult to comprehend. Millions are still without power in Florida, while residents in Texas are beginning the difficult task of repairing flood damage to homes and businesses. The threat to human health and safety is still very real, making efficient recovery efforts all the more critical.
In the days immediately following Hurricane Harvey, members of the Greater Houston Off Road Bicycle Association (GHORBA) focused on helping their members out. The group …
