About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Over the 900 Mile Mark for July Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 31, 2017

Looking at my home weather station around 7:30am I spot 70 degrees. I haven’t seen that temperature in many weeks. This might indicate cooler temperature for today’s ride. I got a 10:20 am start with 86 degrees and it did feel cooler probably because the humidity was less than 50%. Riding the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route i wanted finish July biking getting over 900 miles for the first time this year. I rode 34.3 miles which put me at 908.8 miles for July, well over my 800 mile goal.

The wind was from the NE at 8 mph for most of the ride and with the lower humidity the moisture wicking my jersey is supposed to provide worked nicely keeping me comfortable even in the sun. Sometimes while I passed through some shade it was even a little too cool getting my attention that my jersey was wet but not dripping like it usually was this month. Scattered clouds made for a beautiful sky.

A 15 minute rest stop at the Huffman Chevron at noon with 22.6 miles into the ride provided a recovery period for my legs. I expected the wind to be a problem when I continued the ride from there but it was a tailwind helping me up my speed all the way to Pinehurst Trail where I turned north moving the wind to my right front quarter and slowing me down some. I managed to keep my overall average speed at 14.4 mph even with the wind resistance increased though. Without my PowerPod I couldn’t measure my effort accurately though. It was supposed to be delivered to Velocomp today by USPS so maybe it will be on it’s way back shortly.

One other cyclist literally crossed my route at an intersection while I was stopped. That was it for sightings.

I finished the ride at 1:09 pm and will catch up on the Tour of Utah thanks to my DVR. August biking starts tomorrow and the weather looks even better with the forecast high around 90 degrees. Not the way it is usually.

… Riders of track-style “fixies” also came together for a 50-minute race. The men’s category may have had the closest finish of the day with three riders crossing together for a photo finish. Adrian Flores of Austin, Texas, topped Jerry Rios (Los Angeles) by two hundredths of a second, while Hector Morales (Inglewood) was third, 0.12 seconds behind. Evelyn Williams of Oakland won the women’s division.

I See This Massive Tire Out Front Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2017

During the early morning rain fell at my house signaling the arrival of a “cool” front according to the weather people. For July this means the temperature drops a couple of degrees and so it was for today’s bike ride. I started later than usual at 12:18 with 88 degrees under a mostly cloudy sky. Humidity was a little higher at 70% making for a sweaty ride environment. The wind was from the NE at 7 mph helping to keep me somewhat ventilated and the jersey not quite so wet.

The bike of choice for today’s ride was the Blue Norcross AL. One reason I chose it was the new tires I installed yesterday. The original tires were a Chinese brand 700 x 32C with some short knobby bumps and a maximum PSI of 75. The tires were noisy on pavement and the air pressure and nubs meant high rolling resistance. In contrast the new tires are Continental Gatorskin 700 x 32C with an almost smooth tread area and a maximum of 102 PSI. Removing the old tires was pretty easy with a Kevlar type bead and a flexible sidewall. Mounting the Gatorskins wasn’t so easy. I made a decision to buy wire bead instead of the Kevlar type bead and the sidewalls are not as flexible. I started out trying mount them with a QuickStik but that failed. Moving to the plastic tire levers helped but I grunted and groaned with one of the tire levers jumping out of my hand while using the other one to coax the wire bead onto the rim. Eventually I got the Gatorskins on the rims but if I have a flat I don’t know if I can get the tube out. I need to get another set of tire levers to carry. The ride is much smoother and quieter with my average speed improved over the knobby tires. Looking at the front tire while riding I see this massive tire out front and it takes some getting used to compared to the 700 x 23 tire on the Stradalli.

I chose the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route to ride at least 24 miles (actually rode 26.8 miles) to reach 200+ miles for the week. I made it with a total of 204.6 miles for three weeks in a row of 200+ miles. I am at 875 miles for July and with one more day to ride I could hit 900+.

Nothing out of the ordinary during the bike ride. I made a quick stop at the Valley Ranch Texaco for water and ice to carry me to the finish. Biking south on the I-69/US59 service road was easier than biking to Valley Ranch. With the wind at my left rear quarter I kept the speed at 18 to 19 mph improving the overall average speed to 14.3 mph which started to go down after making the u-turn at Northpark Drive and entering Woodridge Forest and Kingwood. I finished the ride at 2:17 pm sweaty but not as wet as yesterday’s ride. One more day to ride in July and then on to August.
