About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain Delayed With Dog Chase Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2017

I walked out the door a little after 10 am planning on starting today’s bike ride but it started to rain. Waiting a few minutes thinking it would pass I went back inside but it kept raining so I decided to finish watching today’s stage of the TdF to give the rain time to stop and the streets to dry off. Checking the radar the rain was located just in Kingwood around me. After the stage ended I got ready again and left at 11:24 am.

Thanks to the rain (.04″ was all) it was nice and humid but the temperature dropped to 88 so that partially offset the stickiness.

The plan was to ride the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route for 40+ miles but looking at the sky to the south and east I had my doubts that I would ride that direction and not get wet. But as I rode the route the dark clouds dissipated and I stayed to the plan biking 43.4 miles. Although the wind was mostly calm near the end of the ride during the stretch from Fairlake Drive to Hare-Cook Road I felt the wind resistance and the watts on the Elemnt computer stayed above 200 for most of that time. On Ramsey Road another cyclists approached from the south and we exchanged waves. I suspect his car was the one with a bike rack at the church on Fairlake Drive.

Earlier on Fairlake Drive a dog chase happened with a white and brown pit bull looking dog running beside me but not being too aggressive. My main problem with the dog was his trying to get in front of me and my running into him. I sped up and he stayed to my left for about 150 yards when he tired of the chase and peeled off to the left and into the grass.

Once I turned onto Nelson-Wilson Road the wind was blocked most of the time by the trees to my left and allowing me to pedal easier but keep the same speed. At Hare-Cook road I turned right and from there the wind became a tailwind to the finish of the ride.

Stopping at the Valero station north of Hare-Cook Road on FM 2100 I refilled my water bottle and headed to the Huffman Chevron for a longer rest stop. I arrived there about 1:40 at 30.8 miles into the ride. Sitting in the shade I cooled down, drank plenty of ice water and ate the Clif bar I brought. When I went inside the store for ice and water it felt very cold and I hurried back outside. About 25 minutes after arriving I got back on the Stradalli Red Pro 14 and began the last 11+ miles to finish the ride. The wind continued to be from behind and I made good speed to finish at 2:58 pm.

Supposedly the rain chance decreases tomorrow (Wednesday) and I plan on riding though it will be shorter ride.

Austin cyclist accidents steadily decreasing over five-year period

By Jenan Taha | www.dailytexanonline.com

biking bike ride
Bicycle accidents in Austin have decreased by nearly one-third over the past five years, yet several areas of the city remain just as dangerous to cyclists, according to data from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
Since 2012 — one of the deadliest years for cyclists in the city’s history — the Austin Transportation Department has updated its bicycle plan, proposing hundreds of new bike lanes across the city. After the construction of new lanes began in …

Queasy Stomach on the Way to Splendora Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 17, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 17, 2017

I tried to leave before 10 am but due to fixing problems with paying bills I didn’t start until 10:30. Needing 41 miles to reach 500 for the month I selected the “Kingwood – East River Dr – Kingwood” route to the north past Splendora. I ended up biking 41.1 miles, just enough to hit 500 for the month so far.

As expected weather for the ride was warm but not blazing hot, saved that for later today. It was 88 at the start and 91 when I finished at 1:58 pm. Mostly cloudy sky with some sun which probably accounts for the slightly lower temperature. The calm wind meant I had to provide the cooling action by moving through the air. Speaking of air, I aired up the tires (110 psi) before the bike ride and could feel the difference when I rode over a large crack or bump plus the rolling resistance was lower.

On the ride north as I approached Splendora my stomach started to feel queasy. Not sure what the problem was but I kept riding to East River Drive and then made the u-turn back to the south. I drank water and that seemed to help some. I stopped at the Valero station at SH 242 and I-69/US59 for a short rest, refilled my water bottle after I figured out the fancy drink machine and drank more water. My stomach calmed down a little more and I headed south.

The next stop was at the Valero station at Northpark Drive and I-69/US59. I refilled my water bottle and sat outside cooling some. Then I remembered the Clif bar I brought with and ate it. This helped my stomach a lot and I was okay the rest of the bike ride. Upset stomach does not help the bike ride. This is the first time I had this problem in several years. Maybe I should have ate more before the ride?
