About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

LeBlanc: Give those new bike bridges time before condemning them

By Pam LeBlanc | www.mystatesman.com

As a regular bicycle commuter, I wanted to pedal furiously to Ben Wear’s house, avoiding gridlock traffic, and shout choice words in his ear after reading his column last week dismissing the new bike bridges in Southwest Austin as a “glorified scenic overlook.”
Wear, in case you missed it, staked out the new complex of bridges over Barton Creek and Loop 360 — a $14.5-million joint project between the Texas Department of Transportation and the city of Austin — barely a week after it …

Please arrive by 6:45 for a 7 a.m. departure from 15th and Independence (between CVS and Taco Delight) for a ~15mph ride down to Barbecs. Please remember a lock if you have one and to bring cash as Barbecs doesn’t take credit/debit cards. This ride will include Whiterock Trail on the way down and the Cottonwoord Creek trail on the way back. Please load the route below on your preferred navigation device so we have options in case we need to split the group.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/22598282
I know we have a few folks that may be joining us enroute, let me know if you want me to send you a Glympse so you can monitor the group on the way down.

Oh My! The Flowers Along The Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2017

When I start the bike ride at 12:20 pm in July it will be hot. 94 degrees at the start and 96 at the 2:33 pm finish. The south 10 mph wind helped cool some as long as I was moving. Stopping for a few seconds brought lots of perspiration but taking a drink of ice water from my bottle reversed the heat for a few seconds too. I rode the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 27.2 miles which pushed this week’s total to 244.9 miles, the most miles in a week so far this year. July is off to a good start though I will miss biking a couple of days this week.

I wanted to stop and take some pictures of the flower beds at Kingwood Nursery on several rides but never did it. Today I made up my mind to stop. This is what I saw.

The bike is my Blue Norcross AL. The sun flower goes with the Tour de France but not as many as they have in the fields along the race.

Plenty of Company on July’s First Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2017

I wanted to start the bike ride before 9 AM but I just couldn’t get out the door and push the start button on my Elemnt until 9:02 AM. The route of choice was “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” and this time not one drop of rain fell on me. I looked forward with the earlier start to seeing other cyclists along the route and that happened with over 20 crossing my path. All but two were going the opposite direction with one passing me while we were riding east over Lake Houston on FM 1960. He was younger taller and faster than me. Later while I was on Woodbridge Drive the other cyclist caught, said hello and turned left onto the street just before I finished the ride at 11:34 am. He rode a white Cannondale. I wanted to take some pictures but the sightings seemed to come when I didn’t have time to get my phone out.

In order to improve my chances of seeing other cyclists I rode faster than usual at the start but this made me slower during the last 8 miles or so as I used my energy reserve and the average speed started to go down. The temperature was a little lower ranging from 84 to 90 which I appreciated but it didn’t reduce my perspiration. I need to wear wrist bands to hold the sweat back some from my gloves. The wind was from the south at 10 mph and it felt nice when I made a short stop at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice.

The goal for July is 800 miles and with today’s ride kicking off the month I only have 767 miles to go. The week is going well with 217.5 miles.

I will catch up with stage 1 of the TdF on the DVR now.

More great riding weather tomorrow. I need to decide on whether to bike before or after church.
