About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

June Ends with Wet and Windy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2017

My legs gave out at 23.5 miles into the bike ride on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route today and thankfully the Stripes station was there to help me recover. The 17 mph south wind was the cause of the leg fatigue. Biking north to Tavola that wind helped me but I knew I would pay the price when I turned to the south. Looking to my right while riding to Tavola I saw a dark cloud that seemed to be tracking my progress. I felt some drizzle but nothing serious. Loop 494 was damp north north of FM 1485 warning me of the possibility of getting rained on again. The rain stayed away but as I rode east on Roman Forest Blvd. to Tavola the roads were very wet. My washed Stradalli was going to get dirty again. The loop I use in Tavola was wet all the back to Roman Forest Blvd. and for a short distance heading back to US59 but once I got on dry pavement no more drizzles or wet roads. But the dirty work had been done.3

Cycling south on the US59 service road the wind was stiff and the right turn onto Valley Ranch Parkway came at the right time to give my legs a breather. Valley Ranch Parkway winds in various directions putting the wind at odds with my movement until the rest stop at Stripes. After filling my water bottle and resting I got back on the Stradalli to battle the wind for the final 11+ miles to the finish somewhat recovered though my speed did not get as high as before. Into the wind and riding through Briar Tree I looked at the power reading on my Elemnt computer and saw stretches of 300 to 370 watts. That is a high range for me unless I am going uphill.

Fortunately I started the ride a few minutes later (11:00 am) than I planned which helped me to avoid the rain and finished at 2:07 pm. The temperature ranged from 92 to 94 which produced lots of perspiration.

Wrapping up June I biked 880 miles, exceeding my 800 mile goal. Year to date I am up to 3665 miles with a goal of 6800 miles. A summary of June biking is below.

Cyclists riding 4,000 miles to fight cancer

By David Ashby | idahostatejournal.com

Kristopher Novak said his family has had its share of cancer scares.
When his mother was 55, doctors discovered precancerous polyps while she was undergoing a colonoscopy. His stepfather had a similar incident occur when he was 35 years old. In both cases, doctors quickly removed the polyps.
Later on, his stepfather had to have a large portion of his nose removed after a suspicious-looking mole turned out to be cancerous. His nose was later reconstructed through plastic surgery using skin from his …

Our View: Cross-country bicycle ride for charity worthy of praise

A San Marino man who has a home in Lucerne Valley is nearly three weeks into his 27-day cross-country bicycle ride to raise money to fight leukemia.
Steve Gilmore left Santa Monica on June 9, made it to Texas 10 days later and now is more than half way to Rye Brook, New York, a 3,000-mile trek.

Can’t Escape the Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2017

After reaching my goal for June today I decided to ride my Blue Norcross AL bike on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route for variety and as it turns out a leg muscle session. The Blue is about 7 or 8 pounds heavier than my usual ride, the Stradalli Red Pro 14 Carbon, which not so bad at the beginning but the last 8 miles of the ride my legs started to fade big time. The total miles for the bike ride was 32.8 which moved June to 845 miles. I started the ride at 10:59 with a mostly cloudy sky and 88 degrees. Wind wasn’t much of a factor at 8 mph from the south.

Lately biking to the Huffman area involved rain. Well today wasn’t any different except this time I rode after the rain left. I first encountered wet road as I made the left turn from Atascocita Shores Drive onto FM 1960 east. The road was wet but not enough for the bike tires to spray up my back. I think the short knobby tires kept the tire just far enough above the wet road so that the water couldn’t get a hold and become spray. When traffic passed I felt a little spray. When I returned on FM 1960 all signs of the rain were gone except in protected areas by the concrete guardrail. I saw some menacing clouds early in the ride but they moved away.

I finished the ride at 1:38 and wiped the bike down some in case any dirt got attached.

Maybe the ride tomorrow will be rain free.
