About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Getting Accustomed to New Brake Pads Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 26, 2017

After yesterday’s rain shortened bike ride today’s weather was much more biking friendly. Partly cloudy skies, temperature range of 86 to 91 with the wind from the east at 7 mph. The route I chose was “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” for a total of 40.4 miles. June mileage is up to 735 with just 65 miles left to hit the June goal of 800 miles. The miles on the bike ride was a few more than usual because I added a couple of extra streets at the beginning in Elm Grove Village and Woodridge Forest.

I had to get used to the new brake pads when applying the brakes. The new pads grip the rims quicker and with more stickiness producing a squeal every once in awhile. BY the end of the ride I was getting the hang of how much pressure to apply. With the new pads I adjusted the distance between the brake pad and the rim which probably plays a part in the new feel to braking.

A couple of “casual” bikers crossed my path but no serious cyclists.

Weather for Tuesday looks biking friendly so I will continue my quest to the June goal.

Barton Creek bike bridge built, but few coming so far

By Ben Wear | www.mystatesman.com

I tweeted out just after sunrise Friday that I was hanging out at the new Barton Creek bike bridge in Southwest Austin to see how many cyclists and others might be using the $14.5 million edifice. I noted that in the half-hour or so I was there, I had seen one commuting cyclist cross the 1,045-foot span over the creek gorge.
Not surprisingly, the qualifiers quickly started appearing in my feed. Well, you’re doing your count on a Friday, clearly a light commuting day. Don’t you know the kids are out of school? The high is supposed to be 100 degrees for …

Wrong Direction into the Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 25, 2017

I made the wrong choice for today’s bike ride. I think the weather radar I checked before starting was out of date even though the time showed the current time. My plan was to bike south towards Huffman and back but as I rode through Kingwood and near Kingwood High School it started to sprinkle and when I got to Kingwood Greens it started to rain hard so I turned back. Riding north along W. Lake Houston Parkway I decided to go through the new shopping center to see what stores are there. The rain slowed to a drizzle and as I rode back to W. Lake Houston parkway to continue north the rain stopped.

By now I was soaked and the 80% humidity made me feel like I was in a sauna suit with the soak jersey and shorts. I headed back home riding an indirect way to get the mileage above 10 and ended up with 11.4 miles. Not biking yesterday due to rain until afternoon this week’s biking totaled 148 miles, short of my 200 mile goal. For the month of June I am at 695 miles with 5 days to reach my 800 mile goal. If the rain will cooperate I can make the goal.

Yesterday with the rain I performed maintenance on my Stradalli Red Pro 14 bike. The brake pads looked close to needing to be replaced but the wear grooves still showed a few miles left but I too one pad off to check and found the pad needed to replaced now. I took off the old brake pads one at a time and installed the new ones (new pads are Jagwire JS453RCB). This is what the old ones looked like. (click on the image to enlarge it)

6-24-2017 Bike Brake Pads-1
6-24-2017 Bike Brake Pads-2

Behind what looked like not worn out pads if I waited too much longer the carbon rims might have been damaged. Thank you rain for pausing me long enough to check these out. Later I decided to swap the tires as well. I installed the Continental Gatorskin Hardshell 700×23 tires 1/23/2017 at 19257 miles. Now after 2756 miles I rotated to see if I can get more miles than not rotating them. While I had the rims off the bike I washed down all of the places I can’t get into with them on the bike. So even though I didn’t get to ride yesterday I touched the bike anyway.

Hopefully the rain moves out tomorrow and I get to bicycle.
