About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Apprehension About A Section of The Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2017

I was apprehensive about a section of today’s bike ride on the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” because I haven’t bike this route since August 8th last year. The apprehension was about Miller Wilson Road with a number of homes along the road and whether any dogs had moved in since that last ride. It turned out to be no problem as I didn’t see one dog. I added a couple of extra streets to the route to get the mileage where I wanted ending up biking 46.51 miles, enough to push this week to 171.25 miles and the longest bike ride this month. I am up to 276 miles for the month with a goal for 800 miles.

The weather started off sunny (leaving at 10:50 am) but not long after that the sky turned overcast. The temperature started at 83 and at the finish (2:41 pm) it was 84. Wind wasn’t much of a problem from the SSE at 5 mph.

I passed three other bikers during the ride, one in Kingwood and the other two east of Lake Houston.

At 34.4 miles I rolled into the Huffman Chevron for a rest break. Normally I don’t drink anything other than water but today I decided to drink some blue PowerAde and ate some snack crackers I brought with me. It was comfortable sitting under the pump canopy with the breeze blowing slowly through drying the perspiration in my jersey and on my arms. After about 20 minutes I went back inside to fill my water bottle with ice and water to leave for the 11+ miles to the end of the bike ride. Traffic was heavy on FM 1960 as I tried to leave the station but finally a break came and I rode west on FM 1960 doing some mental calculations on what the total miles might be in case I needed to add a street or two to get the miles I wanted. It turned out I didn’t need to add any so I stayed on the usual route.

More good weather tomorrow and I plan on biking to hit 200+ miles for the week.

Katy Trail Dallas: Cycling Gives New Life to a Historic Texas Train Line

John Wachunas | www.spinlister.com

We’re just going to come right out and say it: rail trails are the best.
Across the US, from the crowded High Line in New York City to the secluded Bizz Johnson Trail in Northern California, abandoned train tracks are being transformed into public pathways that breathe new life into an often-forgotten part of American history.
And as it turns out, the folks in Dallas know a good idea when they see one.
Say hello to the Katy Trail, part of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (get it? Kansas-Texas, K.T., Katy). With a history that dates back to the latter half of the 19th century, the first north-south train line to bisect the Lone Star State continues to play a prominent role in the lives of Dallas residents – albeit in a much quieter fashion. …

Rain drops bike rally numbers

BY CHRISTINA DERR | springtown-epigraph.net

The Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its eighth annual All-American Bike Rally Saturday, June 3.
The wet but cool start meant that riders had to battle slick roadways and on-and-off rain showers – which washed off painted directional arrows – but were spared the usual blistering heat that typically comes with a bike ride in Texas in June.
The rest of this story is restricted to subscribers only.

Captains Blog – 06/07/2017 – Monroe May Elementary Ride

by Sameer Gokhale | cycling.powweb.com

Monroe May Elementary Ride
Come out and welcome Texas summer with Velo Valero and the San Antonio Cycling Alliance this Saturday for a ride from Monroe May Elementary School.
Our 32 mile route will go up Chase Hill, Babcock, Scenic Loop, thru the Scenic Oaks neighborhood (Dos Cerros, etc.), up Old Fredericksburg, stop at the Valero and back down Scenic Loop, Boerne Stage, I-10 access, etc.
Our 52 mile route starts out similarly, but after crossing I-10, proceeds down Fair Oaks Pkwy, Dietz Elkhorn, loops thru Boerne, Ammann, back thru …

MJ 100K

athletohub.com

Distance: 62 miles
Speed: 19 – 22 mph

The MJ 100k is a little longer and faster than the Middle of the Road Ride (MOTR). For those who remember the Sweetish Hill Bakery rides, this has the vibe of those. 2×2 lines, social at times, but down to business others. That means you can prove it at the City Limit road signs—like the olden days.
It’s a friendly and supportive group, but If you get dropped, be self sufficient as it not a no-drop ride.
What to bring? Road bike in good working condition, clipless pedals, helmet, water and nutrition, flat changing tools, and no headphones. Stop at 35 mile mark to top off bottles and grab a quick snack at mini-mart. show less
Organization: Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop – Austin
Type: Road
Level: Advanced
Expected Turnout: 15 – 50 riders
Terrain: Flat to rolling, Hilly
Date: Saturday, 10 Jun, 2017Weekly on Saturday
Time: 8:00 AM

I Wish I Output 20,000 Watts Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2017

A familiar route for today’s bike ride along the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” roads but I added a few extra to get the mileage up. I almost hit 40 coming in at 39.52 miles boosting the week to 124.71 miles and June to 229.46 miles.

I started riding at 10:06 and finished at 1:04. The weather was much better than the last two days with lots of blue sky, wind from the NE at 11 mph and the temperature 85 at the start and 92 at the end according to my home weather station.

The PowerPod required a recalculation for some reason but once it was completed the power readings started showing on the Elemnt computer. This caused the max watts to jump to over 20,000 which I corrected using the Golden Cheetah program editing feature.

After riding in the wet on Monday I am hearing a few squeaks from the chain so it is time to wax it again. Probably do that tomorrow.

A short rest stop at the Valero station on FM 1314 at Sorters Road to refill my water bottle with ice and water.
