About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Those red things are bike stands, and the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority has been installing them at various locations in their service area.
In addition, the RTA has installed air stations at high-traffic stations, …

My 24hrs in the Canyon Race Experience – Palo Duro Canyon, Texas.

by dcescott | www.reddit.com

TL;DR: I had a GREAT time.
I was involved in the road race and some of my friends were involved in the single track course. There was a lot going on at the same time! My legs are recovering just fine. My lungs, however are taking their time. The 100% humidity and racing in cold wet weather did them in. Here are the pictures as promised. I’m feeling better today.
Chris “Hoppo” Hopkinson was there and set the course record and he has a tattoo on his leg with the event logo now. His website. I’m not sure why he does that, but he’s a nice guy from the UK and also involved in the Race Across America coming up shortly.
Our team came in 4th, and I came in 2nd for fundraising at $7,777.77. A teammate added $2.77 to make it all 7s. We had two rain …

Early Start (for me) Bike Ride to May Center

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2017

Earlier start for today’s bike ride leaving at 10:08. Okay, that is not really early but it is for me. I chose the ‘May Park Community Center – Huffman” route but changed the sequence of roads again like last week’s bike ride. I biked 42.09 miles which a couple more than usual for this route because I rode a few extra streets to get the mileage over 40.

The weather:

Home weather ride start
Home weather ride start
Home weather ride end
Home weather ride end
Airport weather ride end
Airport weather ride end

The wind seemed stronger than the 13 mph reported from the airport because I pedaled hard whenever I rode into it. Looking at the watts reading on the Elemnt it would shoot up to 200 or more. Riding with the wind the watts were around 80 or less.

A 15 minute rest stop at the Huffman Chevron allowed me to cool off some and refill my water bottle. A Kashi trail mix bar provided the energy for the 15 miles to the end of the bike ride. As I left the station the wind was chilly blowing through my wet jersey making it feel lower than the 79 degrees the sign company’s rolling sign showed. When I first stopped it showed 80 degrees.

With the reversed street directions in some places I am starting to remember the cracks and bumps to avoid standing when I ride over the bigger ones.

Good weather in the forecast for Wednesday and I could start earlier than today because the Critérium du Dauphiné stage is the ITT and it is not my favorite. I will watch the highlights when I get back.

Dodging the Rain and New Service Road Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 5, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJune 5, 2017

My original bike ride plan got washed away when some rain moved through so I adjusted and started the bike ride at 12:10 following the “Kingwood – East River Dr – Kingwood” route for a total of 43.07 miles. The original plan was to ride to Splendora and then bike west on FM 2090 to FM 1485 to Old Houston Road and FM 1314. I guessed this ride would have been 50+ miles. Instead I stayed along US 59 all the way to East River Drive and for the first time rode on the new north bound service road from FM 2090 to East River Drive. I made the u-turn there and headed south.

Earlier some of the dark rain clouds hovered west of US59 between Roman Forest Blvd. and SH 242. I thought the rain might catch me but it didn’t until the return leg in the same section. Riding across SH 242 on the service road I saw rain ahead and felt a few drops. Before I biked farther I pulled into a church parking lot and stopped under the front door awning to let the rain move on. I waited 4 or 5 minutes and rode across the parking lot to the service road. The road was wet but the rain stopped. Dry pavement arrived at Roman Forest Blvd. and stayed that way the rest of the way.

A quick stop at the Valley Ranch Texaco for ice and water and I got back on the bike to finish the ride. I made west loop riding through the Azalea District in Valley Ranch to Valley Ranch Parkway to add a couple of miles to the ride. From there I went through Briar Tree and Auburn Trails back to US59. Clouds looked threatening but no rain fell and I finished the ride at 3:14.

More rain in tomorrow’s forecast but I hope to ride.
