About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Other side of the Road Dog Chase Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 24, 2017 by Rick AnkrumApril 24, 2017

I am back riding the Stradalli RP-14 on today’s bike ride following the “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route. I biked 42.46 miles in great bicycling weather. I started biking at 11:07 and finished at 2:25. The sky was clear and the wind light. It was a little cooler than I prefer with 77 degrees at the beginning and 81 and the finish. To offset the coolness I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. Most of the time I was comfortable but sometimes when I rode through shade for more than a few seconds I felt chilly. The wind wasn’t too much of a problem with the route going east and west while the wind was from the north.

Nothing out of the ordinary on the route except for the “other side of the road” dog chase. I made the turn around at FM 686 riding west back to Huffman on FM 1960. About a mile west of the Dayton Fuel and food store I saw a dog on the other side of the road race to the fence and then to the open gate. Apparently the dog knew it was bad to cross the highway and stayed on that side of the road barking until I moved out of sight. Earlier I rode east on that side of FM 1960 and the dog didn’t chase me. Maybe she was inside or asleep.

Getting closer to my April mileage goal of 772 miles. With today’s ride I am 131 miles short of the goal with 641.46 miles to date. I may have some weather issues later this week but maybe it not keep from reaching my goal.

Cold and rainy from when we left Stone Village through the end of the day. It was quite uncomfortable, and unexpected from a tour in the desert, but it does rain. Blue Norcross AL First Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2017 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2017

Today’s bike ride initiated my new bike, the Blue Norcross AL, that I mentioned yesterday. I chose the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route to ride 29.1 miles. The cool front that blew through yesterday hung around overnight. while I drove home from church before noon I kept checking the temperature reading in the Jeep to see if it would get to 70 but it didn’t by the time I got home. The NW wind had a chill to it so I wore a thermal long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey and bike shorts. This would keep me comfortable once I warmed up. After I was ready to ride my wife took a picture.

I rolled out the driveway at 1:01. The bike rode crisply and the gears shifted smoothly. Though the tire pressure was only 70 psi the ride was firm. It has been a number of years since I rode a metal frame road bike. My measurements for the saddle position from my Stradalli transferred correctly to the Blue Norcross AL and I felt comfortable riding. I learned the distance from the seat to the ground was different from the Stradalli though. The first stop where I need to put my foot down was longer than I expected so I had to move forward from the saddle and straddle the top tube to put my foot down. After that I leaned the bike slightly to the right to reduce the distance.

The wider tires moved over road bumps and debris easily but I could hear the small knobs on the tire whirring as I rode. I think this bike will be a good replacement for my Motobecane 700HT MTB. No PowerPod readings on this ride. I purposely left the power meter off this bike.

Below are some picture of the Blue as I took it out of the box and began to assemble it.
