About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Warmer Weather, Less Clothing Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 17, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2017

A couple of days can make a difference in march weather. Last bike ride I bundled up but today shorts, long sleeve jersey (non-thermal one) and a short sleeve jersey were all I needed. Setting out on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route at 12:34 under a mostly cloudy sky the light wind was friendly since it was from the south. The speed was good bicycling north along US59/I-69 helped by the wind. I knew I would pay a price once the route turned back to the south so I built up my average speed to 15.2 mph but once I was cycling on FM 1314 to the southeast the average speed was tougher to hold there. Slowly it dropped and ended up at 14.4 mph at the end of the 37.34 mile long ride.

As I got ready to to ride I noticed my red gloves were showing the effect of the sun with some of the red now a shade of pink. I retired those gloves and opened the gloves that my daughter and son-in-law gave me for Christmas. The new gloves don’t have as much red on them plus it is silk screened instead dyed fabric. Maybe these will survive the Texas summer sun and heat.

I made progress on reaching my March mileage goal with 244.49 miles or 42% of the 586 mile goal.

The late ride start was because I watched the Handzame Classic on EuroSport and it didn’t finish until after 11 AM. The winner was 1/3 my age or less.

No rest stop during the bike ride since it wasn’t too hot and I had the energy if not the power to bicycle into the 8 mph head wind. I planned on watching the NCAA tournament game between SMU and USC thinking it didn’t start until 3:10 but when I finished the ride at 3:13 and turned on the TV they were into the second half. I watched it until the end when SMU missed a shot with a few seconds left and lost 66 to 65. Tomorrow the Milano-Sanremo race is on and I will wait to ride after it is over.

Day 19: Coldsprings – Navasota
Thursday March 16, 2017, 68 miles (110 km) – Total so far: 1,209 miles (1,945 km)
We departed early so as to get a breakfast at Punkin, wish I’d of opted to do it myself as I could only get a egg and bacon sandwich.
This route to Navasota was probably the least enjoyable of the trip so far. The 150 trunk route was busy, and the drivers on it barely gave us a thought. From New Waverley the road fared little better tho less freight used it. No shoulder again. Some drivers driving at me on the wrong side of the road, fun to them? Yes probably. Expect the worse is always a realistic approach, things can …

Day 18: Silsbee – Coldsprings
Wednesday March 15, 2017, 79 miles (127 km) – Total so far: 1,140 miles (1,835 km)
Another chilly morning greeted us. I met Clive in Walmart down the road as I was up early.
Only 10 miles in and our first eastbounder was Larry, he left Sheppard at 0730 this morning,we were planning on going passed there.
The terrain remained flat, with a tailwind we should make good progress today. At Honey Island a store where the owner said ,’you made it through Louisiana then?’. Well, yes. Clive requested some eggs and toast but at 1130 we missed breakfast as the workers were having lunch sat at the tables. Some other time perhaps at an earlier time also.

Roller Blades Without a Shirt Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2017

I debated about wearing leg warmers today and ended up wearing them along with a long sleeve thermal jersey and windbreaker jacket. I needed them all because I am a temperature wimp. Although the wind was only 8 mph from the SE it had a chill to it that cut through the jacket and jersey but not the leg warmers. Leaving at 12:52 I hoped the warmer part of the day was ahead but the temperature didn’t really change much during the bike ride along the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route. My legs need more pedal time but today’s 34.71 miles is headed in the right direction. So far March is up to 207.15 miles towards my 586 mile goal. Just to compare my wimpy weather sense near the end of the ride as I crossed Kingwood Drive a young man on roller blades was without a shirt (no shivers that I could see) while I was bundled up.

The wind battled me until the 21 mile point as I turned north onto FM 2100. By then the clear blue sky had gained a few scattered puffs of clouds and when the sun went behind one I could feel an increase in the wind chill. From that point the wind was mostly behind helping me get home quicker. No rest stops today since I didn’t want to take a chance of cooling off and being damp when I started riding again. I wasn’t overheated and had energy to keep pedaling.

I was the long biker on the route and spring break meant no school traffic.

With 16 potential bike ride days left I will need to be bicycling most of those to reach my mileage goal. I will not bike tomorrow but from then on the weather forecast looks warmer and rain is not a big problem.
