Rye Texas to Merryville Louisiana
Friday March 10, 2017, 95 miles (153 km) – Total so far: 1,987 miles (3,198 km)
I did 95 miles today! That is the longest ride of my so-called career. It wasn’t all that difficult because there was no wind and the contour was level. All I had to do was to keep on keeping on. Because the journey today was so undifferentiated it naturally let me enter a very meditative state watching in and out breaths and paying as much attention to the debris on the road and the passing noisy trucks as I would see the passing thoughts in meditation. I can stay in that mode for a long time and be happy in this ride.
A bit of my goal today was to finish Texas. I actually liked Texas. It is just too big. One does like to …

Great meetings in La Grange today to prep for the big weekend. Picked up lunch and Rice Krispie squares at Texas One Stop #bpms150pic.twitter.com/XgW9TBbukA
An overcast sky wasn’t enough to keep me from bicycling today. I need to get more rides in to accomplish my mileage goal for March. Selecting the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I biked 34.58 miles increasing my month to date to 136.72 miles, 23% of my goal. I started a little earlier than usual for a weekday bike ride at 11:06 and finished at 1:35. I wanted to bicycle earlier to avoid the potential rain later in the afternoon.
Biking went as planned though the 7 mph east wind required some extra effort whenever the terrain exposed me to the wind. No other bicyclists crossed my route.
As I was riding west from Huffman an Atascocita ambulance with flashing lights raced to the east over Lake Houston. Not too far behind was an Atascocita fire truck with lights flashing. I didn’t know where they were headed but earlier at the railroad crossing at FM 2100 and FM 1960 a construction crew had the right hand lane closed. Traffic was backed up on FM 2100. I hope someone didn’t try to get through the construction zone and have an accident. As I rode west on FM 1960 before the Houston Fire Station I heard a train going east. This was before the ambulance and fire truck came. I hope it wasn’t involved.
March weather continues to be unfriendly to biking. Saturday might have rain but maybe I can ride before it arrives. Later in the day a “cool” front should pass through dropping Sunday’s temperatures into the 50’s.
Houston City Council should OK a bike plan and make cycling safer and more appealing.
Regina Garcia takes pride in the fact that she rides her bicycle to work at El Meson, her family restaurant located in the Rice Village. So do some of her employees. As the chairperson of Bike Houston, she hears a lot of people talk about bicycling in our city, and much of what she hears troubles her.
“Every day, when I’m at the restaurant walking around the floor greeting people, somebody tells me, ‘I wish I could ride my bike to work in …
By Spring 2018, UT will have a gorgeous Speedway Mall with an improved pedestrian experience and increased student activity areas. Having added more outdoor seating, trees and plants and bicycle parking, the project is already looking fruitful. However, construction is hindering the mobility for pedestrians and bikers alike. Even after construction is over, bikers will have to continue to ride slowly or dismount their bikes, as there are no plans for designated bike lanes.
At present, Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) has posted signs around …

“I actually thought I was ready to turn pro, get my driver’s license and drive myself to the track,†he said. “But then my bicycle got ripped off, so I just didn’t go back.â€

Cagle Recreation area Sam Houston National forest to Rye Texas
Thursday March 9, 2017, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,892 miles (3,045 km)
Cagle recreation area to Rye Texas 61 miles. This section of Texas feels different. For one thing last night we stayed in a pine forest next to a large lake. Many different birds woke us up early with so many unique songs but no sunrise — all overcast and misty. After coffee and granola I headed out earlier than usual. With no wind and few hills 60 miles passed quickly. JoAnn stopped me from doing too much more because she found this amazingly unique place to stay.
Shepherd sanctuary is so funky and cluttered with crazy knick- knacks. Utterly charming scenes wherever one looks echo drug-induced visions except they don’t move. We stay in a …
