About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston’s Ambitious Bike Plan Delayed

Houston’s Ambitious Bike Plan Delayed

Gail Delaughter | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Supporters say the plan is needed to make cycling safer. But some officials want to know how the city will fund millions of dollars in proposed improvements.

(Updated 11:09 AM)
City Council has delayed a vote on Houston’s Bike Plan. The plan maps out hundreds of miles of new bike routes around the city, but some council members say they have questions about how those projects would be funded. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says the Bike Plan doesn’t mandate any of those projects, but serves as a guide for future planning.
Backers of the plan say it’s needed to help keep cyclists safe on Houston streets. …

Community members working to make Sherman safer for bicyclists

By Abbie Maynard | www.kxii.com

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) — A group of Sherman community members are working to make the city more bicycle friendly.
Cars speed right by, just inches away from bicyclists on Sherman streets.
Just days after a Sherman bicyclist was hit, the grassroots movement got the city’s attention at Monday’s council meeting.
“Not safe to say the least, we’ve had a couple of accidents,” community activist Sholdon Daniels said.
Like one last week, when a …

Invest in making city more bike friendly

By the Advocate Editorial Board | www.victoriaadvocate.com

The city is making progress when it comes to making the area safer for pedestrians, but we still have a long way to go.
Newer streets north of the Victoria Mall will be constructed with a multipurpose path. The deluxe sidewalk and space adjacent to the roadway will give pedestrians a safe way to travel the streets alongside Ethel Lee Tracy Park.
This is an investment into our city and should be applauded.
But what can we do about our existing roadways? …

Simply on a Bike: the Southern Tier

Bastrop park to Gay Hill
Tuesday March 7, 2017, 67 miles (108 km) – Total so far: 1,764 miles (2,839 km)
Bastrop state park to Gay Hill. 67 miles. The description of a day as interesting doesn’t convey much but it sure does apply to this one. The state park where we stayed last night, Bastrop, has been repeatedly burned (40,000 acres) and flooded, had 1750 homes destroyed, roads and dams washed away to such an extent that following any directions out was just not happening. Even a park employee gave us wrong information. We followed Highway 71 for miles until we got back on route.
Great pastoral ride for many miles ensued. So many cows follow my progress along the road, but I have to say that I’m a little tired of Texas. I wonder if Louisiana is some far off myth.
Suddenly the temperature dropped 20 degrees, the sky turned dark all …

Gay Hill to Sam Houston National park
Wednesday March 8, 2017, 67 miles (108 km) – Total so far: 1,831 miles (2,947 km)
Gay Hill to Sam Houston National park. Cable recreational area. 67 miles.
Today began with a beautiful sunrise and breakfast but became frustrating when small details kept getting lost. Organizing two people’s stuff can be chaotic at the best of times but adding cycling clothes and birding equipment makes for trying moments. Eventually however JoAnn is moving to her day and I am riding away.
A bit of head wind, not too much, dominates the ride again. The challenge is the …

Finally A Break in the Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 8, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 8, 2017

March is off to a soggy start with today’s ride only my third bike ride of the month. I missed a chance yesterday when an approaching band of rain parted and did not drop any rain around me. In hindsight I should’ve went biking. Today the weather was more cooperative with no rain after a mild cool front passed through last evening. I selected the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 34.84 miles pushing March mileage up to 102.14 miles. My goal is 586 miles. I need the weather to let up on the rain.

Another biker was out on Briar Berry Lane as we passed going opposite directions. He was dressed a little cooler than I was. I wore a thermal jersey under a new Primal Wear short sleeve jersey I got for my birthday. With the sun coming in out of the clouds the wind still had a chill to it from the cool front and at 12 mph from the SE the thermal jersey was welcomed.

I won’t be able to ride tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday and Saturday have a chance of rain at over 50% so bicycling this week may not be easy.

Links to RideWithGPS.com and Strava.com maps and metrics.

Weather conditions from my home weather station at the start and finished followed by the airport weather at the end of the bike ride.

It all starts with a bike and a route from Texas to Alaska; all for a cause

BY CATHERINE BUTSCHI | www.tylerpaper.com

EDITOR’S NOTE: Catherine Butschi, a 2012 Robert E. Lee High School graduate and graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin, is training for the cross-country Texas 4000 charity bicycle ride. This is the first in a series of stories she plans to write about her experience.
I am doing something that gives me goose bumps.
It involves a bike, a route from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, and a good cause. When I first told my family I had been accepted into Texas 4000, they thought I was pretty crazy. Physically the biggest challenge I had experienced was playing high school tennis matches at Robert E. Lee when temperatures were over 100 degrees.
Now, I am challenged with completing more than 2,000 training miles in Austin and then …

The steep climbs out of Austin were much more difficult than i expected. It seems my energy was low and the effort required more than available to me. Maybe the …
