About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Things I saw on my bike this week…

Pam LeBlanc | fitness.blog.austin360.com

Despite just three days on two wheels (I’m actually headed to Devil’s River State Natural Area at the moment, where I plan to camp and kayak for a few days), I spotted some cool stuff while riding my bike around Austin this week.
I live in Allendale, not far from the intersection of Shoal Creek Boulevard and RM 2222, but I also bike from swim practice in Rollingwood to my office downtown. Plus, I wind up pedaling all over the city for interviews, …

City street plan to include pedestrians, bikers

By Christin Coyn | www.weatherforddemocrat.com

The Weatherford City Council Tuesday approved a policy requiring that streets within Weatherford be designed for use by pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as cars.
“A complete street is a street that will work for everyone, no matter who they are or how they travel,” Director of Capital Transportation Projects Terry Hughes said. “It is something that is safe, comfortable and convenient whether you are on a bicycle or you’re walking or you’re in a car.
“But most especially it’s safe, comfortable and …

The driver got out and appeared to be in no hurry. At one point he moved the surveillance camera on the front of the business so it didn’t record what was about to happen.

Cruel Wind to SH 242 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2017

Cruel wind! I hurried to start the bike ride today because a “cool” front is supposed to arrive sometime this afternoon or early evening. Leaving at 11:25 bicycling to the north the cruel wind greeted me challenging my tired legs to push the pedals hard enough to maintain 14+ mph and average just over 13 mph. Route selection played the major part with “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” going north for 16 miles before I turned back to enjoy the tailwind side of the 17 mph NW wind. The bike ride totaled 35.16 miles when I finished at 1:57 but even the last 7/10 of mile was into the wind slowing me to less than 15 mph as a goodbye. This probably signals the “in like a lion, out like a lamb” weather cliche people use. At least comic strip used in today’s Houston Chronicle.

The wind increased during the ride from 12 mph to 17 mph at the end. No wonder it was hard pedaling into it.

It was warm enough at 82 degrees that I opted for only a short sleeve jersey atop my bike shorts. My lower back muscles are still recovering from the ceiling fan installation on Monday which hampered my power biking into that strong wind. At least the weather wasn’t like the cold rain the racers experienced at the Le Samyn road race I watched on Cycling.tv this morning.

My mileage goal for March is 586 miles so I will not be able to miss too many days bicycling. I am approaching 1,000 miles for the year at 942.9 miles to date. Thursday, Friday and Saturday weather will probably be cooler than I prefer with rain possible late Saturday.

Seminole canyon to Brackettsville 73 miles
Challenging ride today. We woke up to dense fog. No sunrise today, just gradually increasing daylight. Everything is damp but not cold. 66 degrees. I was concerned about being visible on the highway so I wore my brightest jersey and turned on both my tail lights. Within an hour though, the fog lifted enough. Cloudy all day and not too warm.
There is a bypass around Del Rio, loop 79, that I took even though it isn’t clear that it’s correct. After a few miles I was back on route. I would suggest following that way because …
