About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Trail Replacement on Sims Bayou Greenway

Rachel Compton | houstonparksboard.org

Construction planned between Martin Luther King Blvd. and Scott St.
HOUSTON, TX – January 9, 2017 – The 2-mile stretch of Sims Bayou Greenway from Martin Luther King Blvd. to Scott St. will be enhanced with a new 10-ft. wide concrete trail, replacing the old asphalt trail currently in place. Construction begins January 2017 and is expected to be complete spring 2017. The project will be managed by the nonprofit Houston Parks Board, which is responsible for the maintenance of the Bayou Greenways.
This project is just one of many improvements planned for the expanding Sims Bayou Greenway with hike-and-bike trails, landscaping and trailheads connecting residents to nearby parks and community resources. Expansion of the greenway and trails is …

Day 14 – Bastrop to Austin TX: Friends & Family
Sunday January 8, 2017
Yesterday was a pretty lonely day in that I had minimal interaction with my fellow earth-dwellers, which explains all the gear talk 🙂 But as one might expect from this trip so far, however, today I spent talking with other folks for hours!
My first meeting was with a fellow traveler by the name of Chuck Albert (you can follow his blog at crazyguyonabike.com/doc/BikeTourLX). He is riding the “perimeter” of the US and has been out on the road for many months. Interestingly, he is being supported by a buddy who is driving his van along the route. They stop together in the evening and, if …

Day 15 – Austin TX Rest Day: The Truth Revealed
Monday January 9, 2017
A day of mundane details. First, a stop at Jack in the Box for a bite to eat, the laundry, Walgreens, the grocery store, the laundromat, etc.. Once all that was out of the way, I was off to visit my nearest local bike shop to see if they may be able to fix my USB port.
Stop 1: East Side Pedallers The lone person in the shop…the mechanic on duty…was helpful in that he straightened my brake lever from when I dropped the bike on the curb yesterday morning. But, he had no clue how to fix my USB port. The other part of what this fine gentlemen told me I’ll detail below. Onward I went.
Stop 2: Mellow Johnny’s A hipster kind of place owned by Lance Armstrong. It had a …

Prescribed Burn at Reimer’s Ranch 1/10 – 1/11/2017 – Trails Closed

cxagent | www.bikemojo.com

Heads up if you are planning to ride Reimer’s Ranch next week. I would call before your drive out there on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Could you help spread the word to the mountain biking community that we are planning on prescribed burns at Reimers Ranch on next Tuesday and Wednesday, January 10th and 11th. The exact plans depends on factors beyond our control, like the weather. It is likely that the mountain biking trails will be closed at least one of these days. Anyone planning on visiting Reimers Ranch Park next Tuesday or Wednesday should check the Reimers Ranch Park web site before driving to the park.

National Bike Challenge 1/2/17 Update

by Peter Grasse | petergrasse.blogspot.com

Looking for a great way to get your company, club, and/or community riding? Try the 2017 National Bike Challenge. The National Bike Challenge dates back to 2008 when Rob Gusky and co-workers at Kimberly Clark started biking to work when gas was $4/gallon. They tallied their rides on a whiteboard. Pretty soon they were using a spreadsheet, and eventually a website. In 2011, this program went public with the Wisconsin Bike Challenge, and in 2012, became the National Bike Challenge with collaboration from two national biking organizations: the League of American Bicyclists, and PeopleforBikes. The …

Day 13 – LaGrange to Bastrop TX: Arming for Battle
Saturday January 7, 2017
Today is going to be a “gear” post as I haven’t yet met anyone who has added to my story (though I still have dinner to go, so who knows!).
I had more time than usual this morning as I knew I didn’t have far to go (only 30 miles) and I really wanted to get my riding into the warmest possible period of the day. So I didn’t leave until 11am…which made me feel so decadent after weeks of dawn departures!
And as you can see in my pics, the story of today was arming for battle with the weather. It was cold…even when I left it was in the high 20s. Only in the middle of the afternoon did it inch up over freezing. So, given I spend most of every day outside, I either dress well for it or go nowhere. Now, I understand many of you …

Community Bike Share Program, latest national trend in mobility, to be added to Edinburg’s growing transportation system, say local leaders

by admin | www.edinburgpolitics.com

Featured: The Edinburg Mayor and Edinburg City Council, on Tuesday, January 3, 2016, continued to build on the city’s growing transportation system by moving forward with another cutting-edge trend in mobility – a Community Bike Share Program. In general, a bike sharing program is defined as an innovative transportation program, ideal for short distance point-to-point trips providing users the ability to pick up a bicycle at any self-serve bike-station and return it to any other bike station located within the system’s service area. The station shown here is on the Edinburg Campus of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. …

Devon’s Light: A mother’s effort to keep bikers safe after teen son’s death

by Haley Bull | kfdm.com

Orange — Next month will mark one year since Devon Lestage, 19, was struck and killed while riding his bike. Now, his memory is living on through his mother’s efforts to save others from his same fate.
“He had a really good heart,” his mother, Chanda Foreman, said.
She is holding onto the teen’s memories, kept in pictures, a garden and now her fundraising.
“It’s like when he died a part of me died with him,” she said.
February 2016 the teen was riding his bike on the I-10 access road at Adams Bayou in Orange. Troopers said he …

Day 12 – Brendan to LaGrange Texas: Lies and Damn Lies
Friday January 6, 2017
I totally was enthralled with the Tour de France this year. I’d never watched bike racing and found it to be totally awesome to see how the teams tried all sorts of tactics to de-throne Chris Froome and Team Sky. One thing I noticed while watching the three-week long spectacle was that the announcers used the phrase “had a mechanical” to describe when a rider’s bike broke in some fashion.
Well, today I had my first mechanical. I’d been really fortunate so far with no flats, but somewhere just after I began my journey this morning I picked up a tiny, tiny piece of metal…like maybe 2 or 3cm long and super-thin…in my tire. And, as any cyclist knows, it doesn’t take much. Now, when your bike tire goes flat, the effect is immediate and unmissable: you KNOW its flat.
Well, not so much on a trailer tire.
It wasn’t until about 8 miles into …
