About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Southern Tier Winter Tour

Day 11 – Richards to Brenham Texas: “I waited too long”
Thursday January 5, 2017
As I was leaving the Blue Bell Ice Cream Parlor, well-stuffed with a scoop of Homemade Vanilla and one of Rocky Road an older gentleman approached me and asked “I saw your map…looks like you are riding the Southern Tier” Obviously, the man knew quite a lot of bike touring, which was immediately confirmed as he continued: “You know I always wanted to go on one (by which he meant a coast-to-coast bike tour). I bought all the maps…I have the Southern Tier set in fact…and bought all the gear. But I waited to long. I kept working…didn’t retire until I was 69. By then I was too old. Now and I’m 79 and I wish I’d gone.”
I can’t tell you how hard that hit me. I realized then and there that regardless of why I started on this …

Houston’s hit-and-run problem: ghost bikes honour ‘invisible dead’ cyclists

Nick Van Mead | www.theguardian.com

1,700 cyclists have been hit by cars and trucks in four years, with one in four drivers failing to stop. Personalised ghost bikes are an effort to show people noticed when someone was killed – and give their families some closure

“It’s always the same story,” says Steve Sims, who runs Houston’s Ghost Bike scheme with wife Melissa. “We speak to the family who tell us ‘My loved one was struck and killed.’ It’s devastating for them, but when someone gets hit on a bike here, nothing …

Day 10 – Shepherd to Richards TX: Is that you Mr. Twitty?
Wednesday January 4, 2017
Up before dawn, I breakfasted…where else!…at the the Subway conveniently located 50 feet from the door of my hotel room. Then, with the sun just beginning to turn the eastern sky a dim rose color, I was off and pedaling toward Richards, my planned stop. I began with one extra layer of clothes because it was in the low 40s. But then it got COLDER and I had to add, not take off, layers. I think my feet are just now thawing out.
The entire morning I was thinking how uneventful the day looks like it would be. Perhaps even my very first “ride happened” journal day when I found nothing at all interesting to remark upon. Same old same old. Sure, the road was no longer pancake-flat like it used to be, but I’d kind of expected that since Austin…which I’ll reach in about 4 days…is in the heart of Texas Hill Country. Pretty much one short, steep hill followed by an equally short, steep descent for mile after mile after mile. But overall, I felt like I’d settled into a rhythm of …

Day 9 – Kountze to Shepherd TX: Fellow Travelers!
Wednesday January 4, 2017
I kicked off the day early (as has become my habit) with a dawn stop at Subway on my way out of town. I considered stopping at one of the local restaurants but, let’s face it, who has ever known me to pass up breakfast at Subway?
It has been a gorgeous day for riding, and this morning was no exception: blue skies, mid-60s and almost no wind at all. Making good time my first stop was at the Honey Island General Store, where I spoke with the proprietor, Chuck Turner. He told me that he sees cyclists come by his store all year long, and from all over the world. He told me of one gentlemen who’d visited this past year who was riding a bamboo recumbent from the very southern tip of South America to Alaska (and, let me tell you, that was a humbling bit of knowledge!). He also proceeded to tell me that JUST YESTERDAY a couple from Vermont had stopped.
I missed fellow travelers?? And they were traveling the opposite way no less (and thus far more likely I’d run into …

Fairlake Drive Cyclists Waved Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2017 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2017

The weatherman came through again with nice bike ride weather: partly cloudy sky, 75 degrees (at the end of the ride) and a SW wind of 5 to 8 mph. When I finished the ride the wind had shifted to the NW as predicted for the incoming cool weather. I started the bike ride a noon on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for the first time this year. Adding a few side streets I rode 33.18 miles, moving January to 95.24 miles or 32% of my goal for the month. With the temperature set to drop in the 40’s and 50’s for the next few days I will probably not be on the bike.

When I rode past the Church on The Lake on Fairlake Drive there was a group of cyclists standing behind some cars in the parking lot. I waved and they waved back. I don’t know if they were waiting to ride or finished. This is a favorite gathering spot for bikers that don’t want to ride across Lake Houston on FM1960.

No rest stop today. I rode by the Huffman Chevron but I wanted to get back home before the wind shift rolled through with cooler temperatures. My wardrobe today: shorts, thermal long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve jersey over that. I was comfortable and the wind had some chill to it especially in the shade. I finished cycling at 2:23. I thought schools were back in session but the Humble ISD were still out so no traffic when I passed schools.
