About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mowers and Blowers Christmas Eve Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 24, 2016 by Rick AnkrumDecember 24, 2016

The sounds of mowers and grass blowers are not what I expect on Christmas Eve but when you live in southeast Texas warm weather is not unheard of this time of the year. Today’s bike Ride took me on the Kingwood greenbelt trails and some connecting streets. I biked a total of 21.82 miles pushing my December total to 155 miles, 25 miles beyond my goal of 130 miles. Year to date I am at 7,329 miles. I started the ride at 11:17 and finished at 1:17. I decided to ride the trails in the opposite direction I usually go and added a loop west to Lone Star College on the other side of I-69/US59. Earlier this year the City of Houston installed a sidewalk from Chestnut Ridge east of the railroad tracks to Lone Star College. I bike that direction on the streets but not on the sidewalk/greenbelt trail.

The leaves and fall weather, even though winter arrived December 21st, made for some beautiful scenes during the ride. Here are pictures:

MTB Ride Kingwood Entrance Kingwood Drive MTB Ride Kingwood Entrance Kingwood Drive Foster Mills Pond Kingwood Drive Kingwood Greenbelt Trail Near Park & Ride Lot Kingwood Greenbelt Trail Near Park & Ride Lot

The trails were busy today with bikers, joggers, walkers and dogs. All were friendly and shared the trail.

Today’s wardrobe selection probably was overdone with a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve jersey but i was comfortable. The chilly wind from earlier in the week left replaced with warmer air. Today’s weather at my home weather station.

Weather at the end

Riding among the trees and house the wind wasn’t much of a problem but on the open roads it was 13 mph from the SE, which explains the clouds.

With Christmas and family visiting next week I am not sure when the next bike ride may happen. Warm weather and some rain are in the forecast.

Merry Christmas from Builders Across Texas

by Scott Braddock | www.constructioncitizen.com

Something that’s probably underappreciated is the fact that builders across Texas and the nation are heavily invested in the communities they serve and go out of their way to give back, particularly during Christmas and the rest of the holiday season.
Companies and trade associations taking part in various charitable activities do not do it for publicity, which was made clear to me …

Donated bicycles help adult, children refugees in Austin

www.mysanantonio.com

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Snug in a black peacoat, 12-year-old Rafael Al-Mashahedi eyed the bikes around her, standing next to a few and sizing herself up. Then she spotted the one: a Magna in pink, her favorite color.
The Austin American-Statesman (http://atxne.ws/2inigAP ) reports Rafael had never owned a bicycle before.
She had a small tricycle when she was a toddler, but she had to leave it behind in Baghdad, along with nearly all of her …

By Deborah Wrigley | abc13.com

EXAS CITY, TX (KTRK) —

He received it at 4am on Thursday, outside the gate where he checks Valero workers in to the Texas City refinery. Alcorn works for the Port of Texas City.

Waste Connections delivers 266 new bikes to families for Christmas

by Nicole Villalpando | www.statesman.com

Egide Muiseneza, 5, smiles as he receives one of the six new bikes for his family as part of Season for Caring. Waste Connections’ Austin District built 266 bikes to give away to children in need this Christmas.
The youngest children in the Noheli family rode around their apartment complex parking lot on new bikes donated by the employees of Waste Connections’ Austin district last week. They chased one another, rode up the hill and came flying down it.
They giggled and called after one another. They were kids with all the freedom and …

The joy of giving: Bikes from Santa puts smiles on faces

By Deanna Kirk | www.cleburnetimesreview.com

A young mother of four children was involved in a horrible car accident early this week. The car was totaled.
But one of the first things she did after being released from the trauma unit was call Bikes from Santa.
The voucher for her four children’s’ new bicycles was in that car, and the injured mom, who had just lost a basic need like transportation, was more concerned at that moment that her …

What’s It Cost the City When a Cop Hits a Cyclist?

By Nina Hernandez | www.austinchronicle.com

After two years of negotiations, injured cyclist receives settlement
The city didn’t just settle with one Austin cop on Dec. 2 when it threw $35,000 to Geoffrey Freeman, the officer who shot and killed 17-year-old David Joseph back in February. The same day Freeman waived his right to arbitration and ended his effort to get his job back, the city agreed to settle a case that involved a second officer, who hit a bicyclist in the road and later admitted in a deposition that he didn’t know the …
