About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Walnut Creek Trail Changes

cxagent

www.bikemojo.com

There is trail work going on at Walnut Creek. If you are on Inner Log Loops, you can see the new corridor that has been cut. In the near future we will be grubbing the trail tread. Everybody needs to understand what is going on and why some existing trails will be closed. There is a trade off of closing trails and opening trails. This post is to give riders a heads up on what is going on. Please share this post and its contents with other riders.
Inner Log Loops – The big side walk (North Walnut Creek Regional Trail or NWCRT) replaced the trail that used to connect the Inner Log Loops to the start of Outer Log Loops. We are being allowed to replace that old trail with new trail. The new trail is just south of the NWCRT between the sidewalk and the existing Log Loops. Because of some heritage trees (large ones), the new trail has to be routed where the existing trail is now and the existing trail moved farther south. If this was not done, City of Austin Forestry would have not allowed the …

Lamar Bike Lane Counts: it’s not perfect, but we need it…so let’s use it!

BikeHouston

bikehouston.org

We can complain about how it currently is not connected to other bike paths, we can also complain about the two-way bike lane on a one-way street, or we can celebrate that we have a dedicated bike lane. Me, I’m going to celebrate it and encourage the city to keep building more protected bike lanes.
One way that I can help that is by being counted when I ride on it. Right now the city has a counter set up in order to track the bicycle traffic along the Lamar Bike Lane. So if you find …

HFD HazMat Trucks Near Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 15, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 15, 2016

Biking on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I rode on Old Atascocita Road. Behind me I heard the train whistle and saw the Amtrak train going through the crossing. Up ahead at the FM2100 intersection I saw something orange to the left of a white truck on the other side of the passing FM2100 traffic. As I rode near the intersection another bicyclist cross FM2100 and rode towards me. I waved and said hi and he returned the greeting. He wore a bright orange jersey and black shorts but I didn’t recognize him.

Turning left onto FM2100 to ride to Huffman the wind tried to slow me down. The weather was picture perfect with a clear blue sky, 81 degrees with that NW 8 mph wind going my direction. After riding around a slight right hand bend I heard sirens coming my direction. A minute or so later a big Houston Fire Department Hazardous Materials truck raced by and not too long after another Houston FD HazMat truck with sirens blaring zoomed by. FM2100 could take them to numerous chemical plants or maybe it connected to the Houston Fire Trucks passing me on W. Lake Houston Parkway earlier in the bike ride. Later when I rode north along W. Lake Houston Parkway back in Kingwood the fire truck from Kingwood drove north headed back to station 102.

After the HFD trucks passed I rode to the Huffman Chevron. At first I wasn’t planning on stopping but I changed my mind and rode under the pump canopy for a short break to eat the Kashi Trail Mix bar I brought with me and drink some water. My Elemnt computer screen and weather screenshot when I stopped.

11-15-2016-huffman-chevron
11-15-2016-huffman-weather

I only stopped about 5 minutes and rode back onto FM1960 at 1:19 to finish what ended up being a 32.85 mile long bike ride. Biking west the wind resistance wasn’t too bad and I improved my overall average speed to 15.0 mph by the time I got to the west side of Lake Houston. Riding through Atascocita Shores I took the longer route by the golf course where several people were playing. The owners of the course are working on returning it to a well manicured course after several years of neglect from the former owners.

Today’s bike ride moved me over my November goal of 250 miles to 265 miles. Yesterday I was wrong on my YTD miles thinking I was at 7,074 miles. The correct YTD is 7,077 miles including today’s ride.

The great weather is supposed to continue tomorrow so I plan on riding. Friday a “cold” front could pass through around noon with some rain and much cooler temperatures.

Frisco’s hike and bike trail system to connect commercial with recreation

By Nicole Luna

communityimpact.com

As the city’s $5 Billion Mile continues to build along the Dallas North Tollway corridor, city planners are working to make sure the development is about more than glass, concrete and steel.
For years the city has been plotting a trail system that would provide connections throughout major commercial and residential developments in Frisco and to the surrounding cities.
Having a trail system and open space through developments help businesses by sustaining an environment that is desirable for employers and employees as well as the city’s residents, said …

78 Degrees in Mid November Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 14, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 14, 2016

Around 7:30 this morning it was 50 degrees at my house but the forecast promised it would warm up. By 11:57 when I left on my bike ride the promise happened warming to 75 degrees. I was leery so I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey and I was comfortable but I think I would have been okay with just the short sleeve one. Since the last bike ride went south and east today I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” to ride north and west for a total of 35.29 miles. This pushed November miles up to 239.1 just 10.9 miles away from my goal. Year to date I am at 7,074 miles. Through Thursday and maybe Friday the warm weather shows in the forecast so more bike riding this week.

No rest stop on today’s bike ride making for a quick overall time and finishing at 2:19. One water bottle kept me hydrated with the sweat evaporating quickly from the low humidity and light SW 7 mph breeze. I had to look wide and far to see a few small clouds in the sky. It warmed a few more degrees to 78 at the end of the bike ride.

November biking in southeast Texas is great with weather like today’s.
