About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A trip out east to Tyler State Park in North Texas

by selfMTB

www.reddit.com

TL;DR – This North Texas gem kept my heart pumping and slapped a big goofy grin on my face. Here’s a link to the album.
/r/mtb may not be aware but the North Texas (DFW) area has a plethora of diverse trails to choose from. True: the sustained climbs and descents pale in comparison to parts of the world with..well..actual mountains, but I’m truly fortunate to have my pick of over 35 different trails within a 2 hour drive of my home thanks to the efforts of DORBA and others.
The recent weeks have brought much needed but unwanted rain that closed all trails within a 1.5 hour drive. Undeterred by this, I played hookie for a half day and made the trip out to …

The Dallas Cowboys game was on the radio in the garage. Denton City Council member Dalton Gregory was at his lathe, crafting spoons from different woods when I arrived last weekend. Fishing and hiking gear were organized neatly along the walls among tools.
Hanging from the ceiling above our heads were a red kayak and three bicycles. Altogether, the picture was …

Sunday Streets comes to the Fifth Ward

By Lindsay Ellis

www.chron.com

Sunday Streets event reaches Fifth Ward for the first time
Scooters, bikes and strollers looped up and down Lyons Avenue and Benson Street on Sunday, passing both colorful sidewalk chalk designs and balloons as well as long grass and a boarded-up house.
The latest Cigna Sunday Streets event closed traffic in the Fifth Ward, bringing residents and visitors outside for vendors and food trucks on the cloudy weekend day.
On Sunday, volunteers and event speakers also stressed health and exercise in a neighborhood where many people live in poverty. Kids danced with and high-fived Mikey Molar, an …

Keeping My Cool on the Way to Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 11, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 12, 2016

I waited for the temperature to go up a few degrees and finally started the bike ride at 12:43. I needed a long sleeve jersey again (I am a temperature wimp) under my short sleeve jersey to get me through the shady areas where the north 8 mph breeze made it feel chilly. Bicycling on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I rode 31.66 miles which put me at 7,009 miles for the year. (Yesterday I gave the wrong YTD mileage.) It was 71 degrees at the start and 73 when I finished at 2:55. I was chilly and glad to get off the bike.

Before I biked to Huffman I decided not to stop for a rest break at the Huffman Chevron because I would cool down and then need to build up my body heat again. I really made this decision when I left my snacks at home. At the 20.2 mile point I bicycled past the Chevron station around 2:07 but no one rushed out and waved at me; I didn’t expect anyone to do that.

One of the main reasons I like living in southeast Texas is the extended biking weather. If I lived a couple of hundred miles to the north the biking weather would not be as hospitable for me.

Yesterday I joined the Wahoo Fitness club on Strava and was surprised to find I was #50 in the top 100 for miles biked this week. As I write this post my miles from today are not added dropping me to 93rd. It will be interesting to see how I rank in this group.

I was thinking about biking the Polk County Crime Stoppers Bike Ride tomorrow but I decided to not go. Instead I will stay home and watch the University of Cincinnati Bearcats football game. That way I don’t have to get up earlier, drive 50 miles and then become chilly waiting for the temperature to get up to 70. Maybe if the football was later in the day (it starts at 11 AM) I would ride. Also the $45 cost for the ride is a tough price to pay to ride 42 miles.
