About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 30: Silsbee to a little east of Lake Charles: Into Louisiana (whose state animal I believe is the aggressive dog)
Wednesday November 9, 2016, 86 miles (138 km) – Total so far: 1,982 miles (3,190 km)
Latish start after staying up watching the election coverage a bit long. On road by 9.30 and kicking into a headwind most of the morning. Crossed the border at Deweyville and almost immediately encountered the first roving band of dogs for the day. This was the first one that I was quite worried about and thought for a bit he was going to have a go at me. There were 4 dogs already in the road and I thought I should be able to scoot round them. As usual the smallest one freaked out first which set of the rest of them. The biggest, some kind of lab/pitbull cross was on my heels for a good quarter mile ignoring the water squirts I was hitting him with which normally stops them. At that point I just flat out …

Another Long Sleeve Jersey Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 10, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 10, 2016

Another long sleeve jersey bike ride today on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. At the start (12:05) some sun made it through the mostly cloudy sky but as the ride moved to Tavola the clouds took over. Temperature at the start was 72 and it was the same at the finish (2:18) but the light NE 6 mph breeze felt chilly. The long sleeve jersey was one of my warmer ones, a correct choice. Biking this time of the year can vary with the weather changing almost every day. I wore a short sleeve jersey over the long sleeve one but no leg warmers.

When I rode up to the Stripes station at FM1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway I decided not to take a break. I wasn’t hot nor tired so the snacks stayed in my back pockets to eat when I finished. This was around 21.3 miles into what turned out to be 32.55 miles at the finish. This puts my November total at an even 165 miles, only 85 miles away from my goal. Year to date I am at 6,977 miles.

Once I biked back into Kingwood I rode by the old Sears Hardware Store to see if the rumor was true; the store is a pile of rebar and concrete. They are building either and Aldi or a Dollar Tree, I think. This will be the third building on this property.

More cooler weather tomorrow but maybe more sun. I would like to go biking. Saturday I may go to Livingston for the Polk County Crime Stoppers bike ride. It depends on the temperature. The forecast looks favorable today.

Melbourne cyclists pedal across the U.S.

Sometime, many months ago, John Fahnestock, Don Hemmenway and Matt Kerr decided they wanted to be challenged. The dedicated bicyclists were inspired by Kerr’s reaction to the death of a 29-year-old friend.
“I’ve always enjoyed cycling and I asked myself, ‘What guarantee do you have that you will live another month?’” Kerr said. “So I said, ‘I want to cycle across the country.’”
He asked his friends, all …

Elected: Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 9, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 9, 2016

It’s been several days since my last bike ride. Monday I put the Jeep Wrangler in the shop and that took a bunch of time. Yesterday the weather was dreary and it was election day but today I elected to go for a bike ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route event though it was overcast and 73 degrees. I bundled up some with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one in case the wind was cooler than I expected. That was a good move and I was comfortable the whole ride whether I rode into the wind or had a tailwind. I started the ride at 11:36 and finished at 1:51. I biked a total of 31.61 miles which puts me at 52% of my 250 mile goal for the month.

Since it was cooler my stop at the Huffman Chevron lasted about5 minutes, long enough to eat a Kashi Trail Mix bar and drink some water. My Elemnt screen when I stopped at the Chevron and the weather too.

11-9-2016-huffman-chevron
11-9-2016-huffman-weather

I rode back onto FM1960 west at 1:02 and with the help of the NE wind I set a good pace. My average speed increased from 14.7 mph at the Chevron station to 15.1 mph by the time I turned onto Atascocita Shores Drive on the west side of Lake Houston. I pushed this up to 15.2 mph when I reached Kingwood but it dropped to 14.9 mph by the time I got to the finish point.

Nice to get back on the bike. I did ride my Motobecane 700HT MTB a couple of times to run errands but I didn’t use my Elemnt computer to track them.

It is supposed to be partly cloudy tomorrow and about the same temperature and I plan on biking.
