About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas couple bikes through Southwest to raise awareness about water

By Justin Horne

www.ksat.com

SAN ANTONIO – “We’ve been through Utah and now we are in Arizona,” said Sarah Houston.
Houston and her husband, Patrick, have traveled thousands of miles through the American Southwest on bike. The two left successful jobs in Austin and decided to explore the country on two wheels.
“I had a cubicle job with the state of Texas,” explained Patrick. …

The Death of the Local Bike Shop

By: Robbie Carver

www.outsideonline.com

Independent bike retailers have been fighting for survival for more than 15 years. But recent developments could put these beloved brick-and-mortar shops out of business for good.
My college girlfriend and I used to love to walk to the local Blockbuster and peruse the shelves. We would ghost along the middle aisles of aged videos, our feet shuffling along the thin blue carpet, and occasionally lift a box for the other to reject with a noncommittal shrug. Now, of course, we peruse …

Milburn Bike Park work days!

by dimitrin

www.bikemojo.com

We have made huge progress out at the newly revamped Milburn Bike Park! We have built 3 progressive lines that will be fun for all abilities… rollers, tables, elevated features etc.
Many of you know this has been a pursuit of perseverance for the last 6 years!
We need some volunteer love to help dial it in. Also very helpful are wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels… maybe even a sledgehammer and rock bar.
ARR will be assisting as well! …

San Antonio Removes Bicycle Lanes Again

Daniel Day

bikesanantonio.blogspot.com

I’m starting to notice a frightening trend here in San Antonio. Bicycle lanes are being removed from parts of San Antonio. The two so far that I am aware of is the northbound lane on Broadway at Jones and the second one, not a bicycle lane, but a shoulder nonetheless on Fredricksburg Rd.
If you read my previous posts on improving Broadway, you would have seen my cross-section on that part of Broadway which I called it the 281 Section. Today, the …

Bicycling Through Atascocita – Walden – Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on November 4, 2016 by Rick AnkrumNovember 4, 2016

The bike ride started out (11:43) sunny but by the time I finished (2:26) the sky was covered in almost dark clouds. As I made my way through Kingwood I hoped the rain, if it started, would wait until I got home which it did. I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” without any extra streets for a total of 32.06 miles. When I stopped at the Huffman Chevron the sky was mostly cloudy with enough sun breaking through for me to sit in the shade. The SE 6 mph breeze dried my jersey as I sat eating and drinking. I was at the 19.4 mile point at the station and arrived at 1:07.

11-4-2016-huffman-weather
11-4-2016-huffman-chevron

I didn’t stay too long at the station leaving at 1:31. Thanks to the SE wind the bike ride west on FM1960 went quickly helping to improve my average speed to 14.8 mph. Nothing unusual about today’s ride other than not biking yesterday. I am already up to 100 miles for November and my goal is 250 miles. I am thinking about riding the Polk County Spirit ride in Livingston on 11/12/2016 and the weather forecast looks favorable with lots of sun, a high in the mid 70’s and in the high 50’s at the start. Year to date I am at 6,916 miles. No other serious bicyclists on the route today.

I briefly thought about the Independence Ride in Wallis tomorrow but I would need to get up early and drive for over an hour. The Livingston ride is closer by a few miles but starts at 9:00 AM. I rode the Polk County Spirit Bike Ride in 2014 but last year the weather was not acceptable.

$23 million raised to link 50 miles of Dallas’ disconnected trail system

Robert Wilonsky

www.dallasnews.com

In late June the Circuit Trail Conservancy said it would attempt to raise $23 million in private dollars to complete the trail system Dallas has long been promised — the 50-mile-long network that would link North Dallas to southern Dallas to East Dallas, Bishop Arts to Uptown. This morning, its board members held a news conference in the Flag Room to say they had delivered on the promise.
Now, the …

X-Shifter’s universal wireless shifting kit goes live

By Tyler Benedict

www.bikerumor.com

At Interbike, we spotted X-Shifter roaming the grounds with their wireless shifting upgrade kit that turns any derailleur into a wireless, quasi-electronic shifting one. Whether it’s for road or mountain bike, anything from base level up to premium units, X-Shifter connects to them and gives you control with a single thumb pad to manage both front and rear shifts.
Since we first saw them, they’ve added a road specific shifter unit, upgraded the software to include multi-shifts, controlling both front and …

Southern Tier, October to December 2016

Day 22: Fort Clark Springs to a few miles short of Leakey: A tailwind at last
Tuesday November 1, 2016, 68 miles (109 km) – Total so far: 1,475 miles (2,374 km)
Short day today as it’s too far to make Austin in 2 days so I’m planning on 3. Tomorrow will be heading to Fredericksburg then next day into Austin.
I made a super late start to the day, getting some laundry done and chatting to a few of the RV residents. Late enough I figured I’d grab lunch in Bracketsville before heading down the 90 to Uvalde. The 40 miles to Uvalde was nice enough, with a strong crosswind and an introduction to the rolling hills to come. The scenery is greening up now though which is a welcome relief from the …

Day 23: 2 miles South of Garner State Park to Kerrville: Didn’t get as far as planned but a great days riding

Wednesday November 2, 2016, 65 miles (105 km) – Total so far: 1,540 miles (2,478 km)
It was raining this morning when I woke up with the sun at around 7.30. Weather said it was due to clear up a bit around 10 so I packed down tent and hung out at the campground till then. It was still a bit patchy then but not enough to warrant a rain jacket. I did deploy the plastic bag rain cover for my backpack strapped to my rack.
Entered hill country proper today and while I didn’t make as good time as I’d hoped the scenery was much more varied than last few days of desert and very enjoyable to ride through. Being overcast for much of the day to keep the rain off was great as well.
Roads today were the highway 83 to somewhere north of Leakey then the 39 through to Kerrville. Road quality was …
