About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Last October Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2016

The large cement truck drove by me on the left just south of Roman Forest Blvd. providing a brief vacuum from the wind. I sped up during the few seconds this lasted to prepare for the gust but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The bike ride on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route started off with the wind behind me but at the point I described I faced a headwind. Despite the headwind I built up my overall average speed from 15.0 mph when I entered Tavola to 15.2 mph by the time I stopped at the Stripes station at FM1314.

Pulling into the Stripes station I rolled into the shade and took a picture of my Elemnt screen data of the bike ride up to that point.

Elemnt computer screen

The ride when I stopped at Stripes was at 23.3 miles of what would end being 35.04 miles long. Since it was 1:16 I felt confident that I would miss all of the school traffic near the four schools remaining along the route. I went inside and picked up a couple of free ad newspapers to sit on in the shade. One of the pumps were not in service so I selected that spot to sit and eat a Kashi Trail Mix bar along with some animal crackers. The water in my water bottle was enough to wash this down. While I ate I took this screen shot of the weather.

Stripes weather

I was surprised by the wind conditions. No wonder it was hard biking from Tavola to the Stripes station. The partly cloudy sky let enough sun through to make my short sleeve jersey selection comfortable. I went back inside Stripes to refill my water bottle for the 11+ miles to finish the ride and about 25 minutes after arriving I clipped back into the pedals and rode to the traffic light to cross FM1314 to ward Briar Tree.

I started the bike ride at 11:42 which helped get passed the schools early and finished at 2:31, about 45 minutes earlier than usual.

The last ride for October is in the books. A recap of my biking activity for the month. (Click on the image to enlarge it)

October 2016 Bike Rides

The goal of 600 miles was left in the dust with 26 bike riding days out of 31. The average bike ride was 33.8 miles long. The longest ride was 51.8 miles and the shortest was 15.5 miles. Year to date I biked 6,812 miles, more than any year.

Day 19: Marfa to Sanderson: Friendly faces on the road
Saturday October 29, 2016, 110 miles (177 km) – Total so far: 1,254 miles (2,018 km)
Had a pretty big day on the road today and was underway by about 9. Not the earliest but hard to get up sooner as it’s not getting light til 7.45 in this western part of central time zone.
First 25 miles through to Alpine were a blast with plenty of downhill. Grabbed some lunch there and then just out of town I ran across Turner again from a couple days back on …

Day 18: Van Horn to Marfa: Tougher day than expected
Friday October 28, 2016, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,144 miles (1,841 km)
Had a poor nights sleep so got a very late start. I had been recommended to go through First Davis but this was 91 miles and given I wasn’t ready to go till 11.30 I decided to take the easier route to Marfa instead.
Ride was pretty much all down the 90 which was excellent early with a very smooth shoulder after about 45 miles it turned into quite rough chooses. The whole day was uphill slightly and into a wind significantly. This led to slow going. Between Van Horn and Marfa Google says there are a few towns, Valentine, Quebec and Ryan. Quebec and …

Live Ammo on the Shoulder Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 29, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 29, 2016

As planned today’s bike ride on the “Kingwood-E Lake Houston Pkwy Fire Station” route was shorter than usual coming in at 23.5 miles. I left at 10:59 and finished at 12:42. Along the ride I saw several other cyclists but one in particular hung around. Biking west over Lake Houston on FM1960 I heard a different a strange sound from behind me on the left. Looking behind I didn’t see anything but looking in my mirror I caught a quick glimpse of a bike helmet and as the biker passed he was talking or singing. He rode a Cervelo with a full disk rear wheel accounting for some of the strange sounds. Biking with a disk wheel over Lake Houston can be tricky when the wind kicks up but today the wind was out of the east at 8 mph, not too strong. I kept him in sight and saw him turn right onto Atascocita Shores Drive. I expected to lose him but over the rise I passed him as he stopped by the curb checking something. Not too much later he passed me west of Sunny Shores Drive. I still kept him in sight following to W. Lake Houston Parkway and then north. I last saw him as I turned left into Kingwood Greens. He wore a jersey with the number 140.6 incorporated into the graphics. I am not sure what that meant.

No rest stop today with the shorter ride so I turned around at the City of Houston fires station on FM1960 east of E. Lake Houston Parkway. Waiting in the center of FM1960 for traffic to pass before riding west. The traffic light changed to red at E. Lake Houston Parkway and I stopped. When it changed green I started up and looking down on the other side of the intersection I saw what looked like ammunition from a rifle laying on the shoulder, maybe 10 or more pieces. I should’ve turned back and at least took a picture but I didn’t think of that at the time. I started to watch for a police car or deputy sheriff but none crossed my path. Back in Kingwood I stopped at the Houston Police station and told the officer inside about it and he said he would have an officer check it out. Maybe it was a Halloween prop?

Town Center Park was filled with booths so I changed the return route to get around the people and cross Kingwood Drive.

Beautiful fall weather continues making biking exceptional. Below is the weather when I finished the ride.
