About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

White Oak police officers ditch patrol cars for bicycles

By Meredith Shamburger

www.news-journal.com

The White Oak Police Department is deploying two new crime fighting tools among the city’s neighborhoods and parks: bicycles.
White Oak police said that while the idea of using bikes may sound comical, it’s actually an effective way to do things, such as catch burglars in the act. That’s because bicycles aren’t as conspicuous and are quieter than a …

Ask What You Can Do for Biking in Houston

By Gerry Van Bakel

bikehouston.org

“Ask not what BikeHouston can do for you, ask what you can do for biking in Houston.
Apologies for mangling this famous quote from John F. Kennedy, but I would really like your attention.
While talking about cycling infrastructure and the role BikeHouston can or should play in advancing this cause, I get a bit annoyed by the ‘What’s in it for me?’ attitude.
I won’t diminish anybody’s accomplishments regarding cycling. If you are a strong and fearless …

Not the End of the Bike Ride Season Here

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2016

This morning as I looked at the Bikeforms.net posts one poster said he stored his bikes for the end of bike ride season and asked what now (I didn’t look to see where he was at). Thankfully I have not stored my bike. The weather is still warm (81 degrees today) and I am riding. Today’s bike ride went on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 40.00 miles. A great start for the week. The ride started at 11:47 and I finished at 2:54. The mostly cloudy sky meant the sun couldn’t heat the air completely so at times I felt a coolness in the air particularly in the shade.

Traffic was light riding north to Roman Forest and while I rode the loop into Roman Forest. Riding around Tavola I saw a couple of homes under construction and when I exited back onto Roman Forest Blvd. a new convenience store was pouring concrete in front of the building and around the pumps. A lot of concrete. At the entrance on Roman Forest Blvd. another building is under construction too but it is too early to make out what it will be. Where I turn around on Dogwood Lane in Roman Forest a new school is being built on the old Aiken Elementary school land. I am guessing this will be a middle school.

Setting a good pace the wind did not interfere too much as I rode south along I-69 to Valley Ranch where I made a right turn to go to the Stripes station at FM1314. I built up my average speed to 15.4 mph when I arrived at the Stripes station.

Data arriving at Stripes

Weather at Stripes before I left
Weather at Stripes before I left

Arriving at 1:44 I left at 2:05 after quickly eating a Kashi Trail Mix bar and a package of animal crackers. I skipped the Gatorade and drank water. While I was at Stripes a man who was pumping gas near where I was standing started up a conversation and we chatted for a few minutes until he finished.

The New Caney ISD schools were not in class today so traffic at the schools in Briar Tree and Kings Manor was not a problem even though I rode by them at the usual heavy traffic time. I read that they would out on one of the message boards last week. Teh Bear Branch Elementary school was not let yet when I rode by there.

More weather like today for the rest of the week which means more bike riding for me.

Big Differences Riding a MTB vs. Road Bike

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2016

I don’t ride my Motobecane 700HT MTB very often (9 times this year) and I notice a big difference between riding my MTB and my road bike. The first thing is the big weight difference. My legs get a workout getting up to speed and staying there. Sometimes I wonder if MTB miles ought to count twice my road bike miles because the MTB weighs about 2 times as much (MTB 32 pounds, Stradalli 18 pounds). Next is the gearing. Pedaling at 100 RPM on the MTB in the largest gear I can turn puts me at 15 mph versus the road bike’s 20+ mph. Today I was spinning like crazy and not going very fast in the lower gears. The Kingwood Trails are mostly flat but there are inclines and pedaling up them I bog down quickly. But the view is different and the ride does not take as much time as a road trip. Today’s bike ride was 15.55 miles long, riding time 1:24:54.

Another difference is my aversion to mud. A MTB seeks mud and I avoid it whenever possible. So far I kept the mud at bay but there are times when it wins. I don’t like to clean a mud covered bike.

Weather conditions warmed up from yesterday. The weather conditions at the end of the ride.

10-23-2016-home-weather-finish-146pm

As you can see the forecast for the next 10 days is very consistent; clear and in the mid 80’s. I plan on taking advantage of the weather.

With today’s ride October mileage increased to 638 and YTD I am at 6,570 miles. Riding 4 days this week I managed 125 miles.
