About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

SUV Brakes Slamming Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 5, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 5, 2016

Getting ready to bike ride today I put the route together in my mind. I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route and then made a few minor changes. The bike ride came out at 37.18 miles. A not so blustery wind made the ride much nicer than yesterday’s 13 mph wind with 21 mph gusts. Indian Summer weather ruled biking today: 86 degrees at the 11:34 AM start moving up to 90 degrees when I finished at 2:46 PM. The breeze from the SE came in at 9 mph, not enough to really impact the ride. At times I wanted more wind to help cool down.

I took a rest break at the Cumberland Shell station at 22.4 miles into the ride at 1:05 PM. The Elemnt screen when I stopped and the weather while I was resting.

10-5-2016-cumberland-shell
10-5-2016-porter-weather

Fruit punch Gatorade and some snack crackers refueled me for the remaining 14+ miles to the finish. As I was getting ready to leave the station I heard a loud squeal of tires and turned around to see a silver SUV sliding towards the Cumberland Blvd. intersection. The SUV was in the right lane and a yellow van was in the left waiting for the red light to change. Not stopping the SUV made a sharp right turn around the pole holding up the traffic lights and onto Cumberland Blvd. and into the grass before slowing enough for the driver to regain control. The SUV got back on the pavement headed into Cumberland. After I left the Shell station and rode across FM1314 to go SE on FM1314 I saw the SUV coming back out of Cumberland on the exit side of the road and back onto FM1314 to Porter. I am not sure what happened but maybe the driver didn’t see the red light in time to stop safely and slammed on the brakes. There was a man by the front of his pickup by the store and we exchanged a few gestures and words about what happened.

The rest of the ride was uneventful. I was early passing the schools in Briar Tree and Kings Manor and Bear Branch Elementary had early release well before my passing through.

With today’s ride I am at 25% of my mileage goal for October of 600 miles. Tomorrow’s weather should repeat today and I plan on a bike ride.

Changing of the guard

About 14 years ago we bought a house about 1/8mi from the south side of Walnut Creek park.
I rode every day and watched the seasons come and go. I watched erosion change the shapes of the trails and could tell when something was a little different.
The park is part of our lives. Some days, I see nobody else out there and it’s like my own personal private space.
Just over five years ago we had twins and we made sure the park has …

before anyone states the obvious, yes, the landing is to short and way to flat for a drop this big. its going to undergo drastic changes and become much steeper and longer… needless to say, the landing was rather jarring.. my neck is legitimately sore. mountain bike wiplash is a first for me…

Fallen officer event takes on new meaning

www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Fallen officier
Statistics say one police officer dies in the line of duty every 61-hours; a fact made too real in July when a sniper killed five cops in downtown Dallas. What also made it too real was that each of those officers was also a person; someone with a family and friends separate from the job they performed.
It’s such tragedies that make the annual Highland Village Fallen Officer Bike Race and 5K so important. The ninth-annual festivities will take …

Stroker Road Bike Ride With Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on October 4, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 4, 2016

I rode the bike on the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route today for a total of 42.64 miles. I detoured around the road repairs on W. Lake Houston parkway adding a mile or so to the usual mileage. The ride started at 11:13 because I watched the Binche – Chimay – Binche race from Belgium on www.cycling.tv. This was the first time I watched this race. The live stream was first class as was the commentary.

The weather is warming up almost to early summer levels. 82 degrees at the start and 90 degrees when I finished at 3:03. Scattered clouds contributed to the warming but the stiff SE wind (13 mph with 21 mph gusts) made riding difficult into the headwind.

People were active in the grass fields along Ramsey Road as I rode by. I welcomed the 18 wheel trucks as they passed me providing a brief relief from the wind.

Once I reached Stroker Road and turned to the west the wind helped move me along to FM2100. Riding north on FM2100 the continued to assist me. Approaching the railroad tracks in Huffman I slowed down and then the cross arms came down. A long freight train passed through going west which is not the usual direction trains move on this track. I figured this meant the Amtrak train would not come through Huffman with the time about 1:25 and the Amtrak train usually coming through about the same time. After the cross arms lifted I rode to the Huffman Chevron for a needed rest break. The Elemnt screen when I stopped at the Chevron station and the weather while I rested.

10-4-2016-huffman-chevron
10-4-2016-huffman-weather

I enjoyed the shade and breeze sitting under the canopy. The blue Powerade, snack crackers and candy helped to replenish my energy for the ride back to Kingwood. Around 2:00 I heard another train horn blowing from the west, the usual direction trains come from, and it sounded like the Amtrak horn. It was the Amtrak train which I guess waited for the freight train to get by somewhere. Normally the Amtrak train is a short train with a couple of engines and five or six cars but today there were several engines and maybe twice as many cars. Maybe they need these to the east of Houston.

Leaving the Chevron station about 2:10 I rode west on FM1960 with a nice tailwind. The rest stop and fuel enabled me to keep a good pace and move my average speed back up to 14.6 mph.

More warm weather in the forecast tomorrow. I plan on riding to take it in.
