About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Superb Fall Weather Plus a Dog Sprint Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2016 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 3, 2016

Beautiful fall like weather on today’s bike ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route. I stopped after entering Tavola and took these pictures.

I didn’t realize I was so serious when I took the selfie. The sun was bright and I was concentrating on getting everything in the shot. This was around 13.4 miles into what ended up being a 38.19 mile long ride. This is what is behind the sign.

After riding the loop through Roman Forest I turned south along I-69 and then Valley Ranch Parkway to stop at the Porter Stripes for a rest break. Sitting in the shade by the pumps was very pleasant with the north breeze moving through. The large flag in the middle of Valley Ranch Parkway sagged and billowed as the wind stopped and started. My sweat dried quickly and watching the puffs of clouds high in the blue sky was relaxing. I bought a large Gatorade to go with the snack crackers to refuel for the 11+ miles to the end of the ride. I arrived at Stripes at 1:49 and stayed about 25 minutes. My Elemnt screen when I arrived and the weather screenshot while I was resting.

The ride from Stripes to the end went through Briar Tree on Briar Berry Lane. As I passed from Briar Berry Lane onto W. Hammond Drive a big black dog appeared out of the overgrown brush coming from a home on my right. He was barking as he ran on the grass on the right side of the road. Thankfully the wind was at my back so I didn’t have to fight that as I sped up. the stayed even with me but around 200 feet from where he started running he slowed down and stopped. A couple of years ago I had a similar surprise at this spot. I remember it and try to check the area as I ride by to keep from being surprised. It paid off today.

The ride finished at 3:10. I put the bike away and looked at the sky to take in the almost fall like weather. Just a few weeks ago we experienced 5 or 6 days at 100 degrees. I think the hurricane is influencing our weather for now and I like it.

First September Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 2, 2016 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 2, 2016

Today’s ride kicked off September biking. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route but extended it even further by adding some streets in Elm Grove Village in Kingwood. I rode 35.67 miles. Usually this route is a couple of miles shorter. I started riding at 12:04 after watching stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana which was a long one. With the late start the temperature had time to heat up to 92 degrees. The partly cloudy sky was nice and the wind was not too strong. After yesterday’s ride while I was in the shower a rain storm passed through which would have soaked me if I was still out on the bike.

Nothing unusual on the ride today. I arrived at the Huffman Chevron for a rest stop at 1:39 after biking 21.8 miles. My Elemnt screen and the weather while at the station.

9-2-2016 Huffman Chevron
9-2-2016 Huffman Weather

The wind was from the NE at 9 mph which increased the energy when I rode north on FM2100 from Old Atascocita Road. Fortunately there are a lot of very tall pine trees lining the road to break the wind until the last 1/2 mile or so. I bought a large blue PowerAde to go with a Clif bar and snack crackers. Sitting in the shade the breeze came through some time to help the cool down process. One of the ladies from the station was lowering the prices on the big sign. She used a long pole with a suction cup to remove the old digits and stick the new ones up. I have another lady take a long time to make changes but today she was quick an accurate from the ground up as far as the stick would extend. I refilled my water bottle and rolled away at 2:13 for the final segment of 13+ miles. I finished the ride at 3:13 with an overall average speed of 14.5 miles. The maximum average speed was 14.8 mph but it fell as I made my way through the Kingwood streets and traffic.

I could feel a coolness in the weather which might be from the hurricane that came ashore this morning in the Florida panhandle or maybe because fall is only 19 days away. Tomorrow the high temperature is expected to be 90 degrees with a very low chance of rain. I plan or biking.
