About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ride starters rise, shine on Saturday morning

Few cycling clubs can match Houston’s Northwest Cycling Club for long-term viability and consistency. And the club’s calling card is its famous Saturday morning ride.
For more than 25 years, no matter what the weather, cyclists numbering from 75 to well over 200 converge every Saturday morning at Zube Park in far northwest Harris County. Many are club members, but many others are non-club members who are always welcomed guests.

…Unbelievable as it may seem, 2016 is actually the 10 year anniversary of the Velo Valero Captain’s Blog. That is a long time to be cranking out weekly updates on all things biking in South Texas. Your current humble blogger has written most of these, but we’ve also had them penned by some our current and past captains, including Seymour, Tim, and Andrea. Just for grins and giggles, here’s a link to one of the earliest blogs ever written, the Christmas edition from December of 2006. Enjoy!

August Bike Riding Mileage Goal Met

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2016

812.61 miles for August!! The goal was met with today’s ride of 34.8 miles on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Nothing like waiting until the last day to reach the goal. I reached the goal at the Porter Stripes station where I stopped for a rest break and celebration of Gatorade, Clif bar and snack crackers. With all of the wet weather I still rode 22 times during the month. A recap of the August rides. (click on the image to enlarge it)

8-31-2016 August to Date

The weather was great today with the temperature in the 90’s, scattered clouds and a NE wind at 8 mph. The wind made the ride to Tavola harder than I preferred but the return south was much easier. I left on the ride at 11:32 going through side streets in Kingwood. Riding north on the I-69 service road to Tavola the traffic was light. I made the loop trough Tavola and then headed south on the I-69 service road to Valley Ranch Parkway on the way to the Porter Stripes. The Elemnt screen shot when I got to Stripes and the weather while I was there.

8-31-2016 Porter Stripes
8-31-2016 Porter Weather

With the shorter route than Monday’s ride north I was in front of the school dismissal traffic when I left the Stripes station at 1:48. The schools in Briar Tree did not have anyone there yet when I rode by but the Kings Manor buses and parents were starting to gather there. Bear Branch Elementary in Kingwood had a few cars parked along the street when I rode through. I finished the ride at 2:39.

August ride stats:

  • 22 rides
  • average bike ride length was 36.93 miles
  • total August bike riding time was 57 hours and 3 minutes
  • 5,666 miles year to date, 157 rides this year
  • Stradalli bike now has 17,309 miles ridden
  • Elemnt computer used for 2,248 miles this year

Thursday is an off day but I plan on biking on Friday, weather permitting.
