About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Race Withdraw So I Went Biking

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2016

Great ride to start the week leaving home at 10:25 on the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route. I started a little earlier than usual thanks to no bike races to watch. Last week was bike race watching overload and this week is the opposite. I rode 44.44 miles under scattered clouds and a light south breeze. The temperature was 89 when I started and 97 at the finish (2:08).

The ride was uneventful which is a good thing. I stopped for a rest break at the Huffman Chevron at 33.2 miles at 12:42. I went inside to buy some blue PowerAde but the fountain dispenser was out so I drank good ice water with a Clif bar and some snack crackers.

8-8-2016 Huffman Weather

While I was resting a freight train that had been stopped west of the FM2100 crossing started blowing a warning horn as it move slowly through the crossing. I thought it would gain speed as it went but it didn’t taking many minutes to clear the crossing. About 20 minutes later another train heading west passed through at a good clip. This is unusual because almost all the trains travel to the east. I think the slow moving train pulled onto the siding east of FM2100 to allow the other train to pass. May there is a problem with the west tracks to the south in Crosby.

I left the Chevron station after 2:15 for the 11+ miles home. The wind was favorable for a change and I was able to improve my overall average speed to 15.0 mph.

With today’s ride August miles moved up to 250 miles, leaving 550 miles to reach my goal. I checked my ranking at the National Bike Challenge and I am at 807 not counting today’s ride. Big drop from Saturday. The weekend riders were busy. I hope to move up with this week’s riding. More hot and dry weather tomorrow. No bike races to watch so I should be able to ride earlier than usual.

Lovin’ That 99% Done 3rd St Bike Lane!

by Mike Melanson

austinonabike.com

If you haven’t been downtown in a bit, we’re finally at about 99% on the 3rd street separated bike lane. And, rather commendably, I’ve run into far fewer cars parked IN the bike lane lately.
For the first time, I was able to ride the full length of 3rd Street heading west all the way through downtown the other night, so I snapped a couple commemorative pics. Right now, the only thing stopping it from …

How Much Bike Racing Can I Watch in One Day Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2016

I biked 29.36 miles today which is less than I expected on the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. Before leaving on the ride at 11:33 I saturated myself watching bike races with the Volta Burgos, Volta a Portugal and the early kilometers of the men’s road race from Rio. I was challenged keeping up with what was happening at each race when they were overlapping.

Today’s weather was hot again and dry. Someday we may see rain again. This is great for riding but not so good for my yard and plants. Scattered clouds held the sun back at times and the shade from trees hanging over the road was welcomed. With the shorter ride I made a quick stop at the Valley Ranch Texaco to refill my water bottle and eat a package of Ritz snack crackers.

8-6-2016 Valley Ranch Texaco
8-6-2016 Porter Weather

I reached almost 206 miles for the week putting me at 25% of my goal for August. I also participate in the National Bike Challenge and checked the leaderboard where I am ranked 182nd before today’s ride. This jumps around some because yesterday I was ranked 303rd.

Tomorrow may be a rest day or I will ride my MTB. The weather repeats today.
