About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sickness, Fixed Bike, Short Recovery Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2016

I am finally back riding today. The last ride was Monday. After that ride I dropped the Stradalli off at the local bike shop, Bike Werks, to fix a clicking bottom bracket. Tuesday my wife and I went to Galveston for a day trip and relaxation. It rained most of the time we were there but it was enjoyable. On the way back I started sneezing and not feeling good and by the time we got home my sinus and head were in bad shape. This kinda worked out okay because the bike was still in the shop. Wednesday the bike shop called to give me the run down on what was wrong: bottom bracket bearing on the drive side needed to be replaced, head set was loose, rear brake loose, rear axle loose and the shifting needed adjustment. The bearings would take a day to get and since I was sick the timing was good. Thursday I was still sick. The bike shop called in the evening to tel the work was done but I didn’t feel good enough to drive there and said I would pick it up on Friday. Friday after watching some bike races I drove to the shop and picked the Stradalli. The cost was a very reasonable $64.94. Loaded the bike into the Wrangler and headed home.

Today I was feeling much better with the sinus almost back to normal. I watched bike races and then got ready to ride a shorter route, “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch”. I left home at 12:22 but as I rolled out the driveway and started to pedal I heard the chain rubbing the inside of the front derailleur. Not good. I planned on riding to Atascocita and Walden but I changed that plan to ride to Bike Werks to fix the rubbing. When I got there the store person said the person who worked on my bike wasn’t there today and he wanted me to leave the bike. Since I rode it there I didn’t have a way home and didn’t want to leave it and miss riding. After some talking he agreed to look at it. He took it back into the shop area and worked on it. He thought he had fixed it adjusting the cable tension and maybe the inside limit screw. I looked at and it didn’t appear to be fixed. I told him if it still rubbed I would fix but when I went outside it didn’t rub at all. I was wrong and I should have went back inside to apologize but I was in a hurry.

The bike performed great and I pedaled easily without the clicking or the rub. I could tell the difference with bike handling and ride with the tight headset, rear brake, shifting and rear axle. I don’t know if it was the fixed bike or my days off but I was able to ride smoother and faster.

I only stopped at the Valley Ranch Texaco for some ice and water. The wind was not a problem and I set a strong pace on the south bound I-69/US59 service road to Northpark Drive where I made a u-turn to ride into Kingwood through Woodridge Forest. I finished the ride at 2:20.

It is a good thing I reached my July goal before I got sick. Today’s ride added to my overage. I biked 818 miles versus the 765 mile goal.

Barton Creek bike bridges on the cusp of opening

By Ben Wear

www.mystatesman.com

The Barton Creek bike bridges project, a decade in the making and an unprecedented commitment to cycling in Austin, will open in stages between now and the end of the year.
The northern end of the project, which includes surface trails on each side of Loop 360 at South MoPac Boulevard and two short bridges over Loop 360, could open informally within a week after workers put up temporary chain-link fences for safety, said Chad Crager, the city of AustinÓ³ division manager over urban trails. By October, after permanent railings are in place, that $3 million northern piece will be fully open. …

Day 79: No Way But The Long Way
Friday June 24, 2016, 95 km (59 miles) – Total so far: 3,286 km (2,042 miles)
On the morning of the 24th I checked and double checked my things before departing. I said my farewells, then I began to ride.
I didn’t make it very far before some noise of my chain forced me to stop. Something was wrong! I had just put a new chain on, it shouldn’t have anything wrong with it. I realized that the reason it was so noisy was that I routed it incorrectly (it was over one of the metal derailleur tabs, instead of under it). At first glance it didn’t look wrong but it was, and I had to ride back to my friend’s house and borrow some pliers to fix it.
I had to say my farewells again! It reminded me of my farewells in Matamoros! Was I going to keep having false starts, and repeated goodbyes? …

TX: Plan Aims to Improve Biking, Walking Options in Woodlands Township

Bridget Balch

www.masstransitmag.com

The Woodlands Township Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, which offers short and long-term improvements for walking and biking around town, is nearing completion.
The creation of the plan has been a topic of discussion among residents and The Woodlands board of directors since 2012, when the League of American Bicyclists awarded the community a bronze-level designation for being bike friendly. Part of the reason The Woodlands fell short of the gold is that it lacked a long-term plan to improve and expand the pedestrian and bicycle network in the community, said George Mendes, a member of the Bike The Woodlands Coalition, a grassroots organization dedicated to improving cycling in The Woodlands. …

Cyclist’s GoPro video shows safety concerns on Ocean Drive

CORPUS CHRISTI – Ocean Drive is a popular route for the cycling community. But a cyclist’s GoPro video shows us that it can be a dangerous route despite the bike lanes already in place for most of the road.
Nick Olvera’s video shows that in some areas the bike lane is clearly marked, in other areas it completely disappears, and then you have to watch out for cars and trucks parked in the bike lane.
He started riding 4 years ago to get control of his life and his health. “My diabetes was out of control. I was weighing 325 pounds I’ve lost like 85 pounds since I started doing this,” Olvera told KRIS 6 News. …
