About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

9AM Start on Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJune 25, 2016

Out the door and push the ride start button by 9 AM. That was my goal for today’s ride. I made it by a few seconds with the 8:59 start time to ride the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route. I figured with the early start (early for me) there would be other bikers along the route. Bike Barn Atascocita has a Saturday morning ride but I have not done it because they start much earlier. Once I was through Walden I started to see bikers returning. First I saw 3, then a couple more, a 6 rider pace line on the Lake Houston causeway and many more on Fairlake Drive and Old Atascocita Road. I guess I saw 40+ bikers along the route. The last ones I saw were on approaching me on Peters Road as I rode south on Ramsey Road. I turned left and I thought they would turn on Ramsey Road to the north but they followed me from there all the way to when I turned left onto Miller Nelson Road going south. I planned to take pictures if I saw any bikers but they seemed to appear quicker than I could stop, get my phone out and snap a photo.

Weather was a little milder with the early start but it wasn’t too long before it heated up. A partly cloudy sky and a slight breeze from the SE helped cool me for awhile along with the ice water in my water bottle. My home weather station at the beginning and end of the ride.

Ride start
Ride start
Ride end
Ride end

This route is a 40+ mile route and today I rode 43.27 miles. This improved June miles to 745 miles, 230 miles short of my goal for June. I won’t hit my goal but I should be about 120 miles closer.

I took a rest break at my usual place, the Huffman Chevron. It was different being there so much earlier than usual. I was able to sit in a spot that would be in the sun at my typical arrival time. This spot has a better view and is not in the way of parking cars. The Elemnt screens when I arrived.

6-25-2016 Huffman Chevron-1
6-25-2016 Huffman Chevron-2

It was 11:15 when I stopped at the station and I left around 11:45. I took this opportunity to rinse out my gloves and wrist bands. The sweat soaked them and paper towels didn’t do much drying them out so I took the garden hose and wet them. Squeezing them let loose the built up sweat and later they felt cool as I rode home. The cold Powerade and snacks revived me for the 11+ miles to home. I made good time riding west on FM1960 with the wind at my left rear quarter. It became more of a tailwind riding through Atascocita Shores and north on W. Lake Houston Parkway. Saturday morning traffic was light and it didn’t take long to cross Kingwood Drive and wind through the streets back home. I stopped the ride at 12:41. Many rides that is the time I start riding.

More of the same weather tomorrow. I plan a shorter ride after church to wrap up the week. So far I am on a 13 consecutive day biking streak. Maybe I can add 4 more days to the streak.

New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 24, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJune 24, 2016

I almost started biking before 10 AM but I was 9 minutes too late. Tomorrow I am planning on starting by 9 AM. This early for me unless it is an organized ride.

Last night I when I took the garbage out I checked the tires (an obsession I guess) and found the rear tire was flat. My squeeze test worked this time. I removed the wheel and looked for a cause. At first I thought I wasn’t going to find anything but almost near the end I found two pieces of wire sticking out of the tire. Fortunately I made it home on yesterday’s ride without any problem. I went inside to start fixing the flat. Pulling the tube out of the tire I needed pliers to remove the wire. I marked the hole, spread the glue and then applied the patch. I am not known for accurate patch placement but this time it was in the right place as I aired up the tube before putting it back inside the tire. To be safe I kept the tire in the house for about an hour and it was still firm. This is the first flat in a long time and the tube doesn’t have any other patches.

The route for today was “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch”. I needed to bike at least 32 miles to put the total for the month at 700 miles. I ended up riding 34.18 miles bringing June’s total to 702 miles. Riding through Tavola reminded me of what the land used to look like before it started being built.

The earlier start meant the weather wasn’t at its peak but it didn’t take long. The weather at the start and end of the ride.

The rest stop at the Porter Stripes station came at 22.9 miles into the ride. I was there about 30 minutes enjoying the wind while sitting in the shade of the pump cover. The cool Gatorade and a Clif bar helped me get ready for the 11+ miles to home. I refilled my water bottle with ice and water. The pages from my Elemnt when I arrived at Stripes.

No stops after leaving Stripes other than traffic. I was back home at 1:14, the earliest finish in some time.
