About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I Left out this morning without knowing where I would end up. The only plan was to head South at the state road going south, so in Dickens at hwy 70 I made a right turn. The Texas plains miles and of plowed fields ready for corn or cotton. I stopped in Spur,TX for a great lunch of fried catfish, hush puppies cole slaw and pinto beans with cherry cobbler for desert. Stroker Road – Huffman Over 40 Miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2016

I managed to start riding before noon and I pushed the start button on the Edge 520 at 11:50 am. I headed south to ride the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route. So far this week no ride has exceeded 40 miles but today I rode past that mark coming in at 41.66 miles. The weather is getting more summer like each day. My home weather station before I left home.

5-14-2016 Home Weather Start 1142AM

This morning the Garmin Connect app updated again to version 3.6.0.1. This was a minor update with no major numbers. I didn’t power off my phone this time and decided to ride. I did get a phone disconnect message at the .10 mile point and the phone connect message came at .13 miles. After that no more problems and the ride data recorded.

Riding through Kingwood Greens after leaving W. Lake Houston Parkway I rounded a corner and a tandem was coming from the opposite direction. I could her the lady stoker giving instructions to the man in the front as we passed. Later on I met another biker on Ramsey Road south of Old Atascocita Road. He was crouched over his aero bars but we exchanged waves.

The wind was light enough to not be a problem and I made good time once I was through Walden and on FM1960 riding to the east. I increased my average speed as well. I should have stopped at the Chevron station at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM1960 to refill my water bottle since it would be more than 12 miles before I could stop at the Shell station on FM2100 north of Stroker Road. I managed my water and kept enough for the last drink just before stopping at the FM2100 intersection. I refilled my bottle and took a big drink of the ice water and moved to FM2100 to ride north to Huffman.

Pulling into the Huffman Chevron I took this picture of the Edge 520 screen.

5-14-2016 Huffman Chevron

No sport drink today, just ice water while I ate a trail mix bar and a granola bar. The light breeze blew through the canopy area where I sat leaning against a pole. The humidity was high enough that the sweat didn’t dry up without using a few paper towels. I checked the weather while I was there.

5-14-2016 Huffman Weather-2
5-14-2016 Huffman Weather-3

It was slightly cooler than when I started the ride.In the right picture there are some rain activity to the west and south so I didn’t prolong my stay at the station. I topped off my water bottle with more ice and water and got ready to ride home. Going west on FM1960 I could the sky had changed to what might be rain. Turning right onto Atascocita Shores Drive I rode to W. Lake Houston Parkway and heard thunder as I passed the Kings Manor pool. I kept the pace up to get home before rain arrived. More thunder as I got to Town Center and the sky got a little darker. I made it home at 3:13 ahead of the rain. Going inside I checked the radar and the rain was “U” shaped around Kingwood coming our way. Huffman was about to get wet. As I write this it rained .38″ at my house. The wind at the airport picked up too as the rain approached from the SW. Glad I was home before it got to me.

5-14-2016 IAH Weather Finish 322PM

The weather for tomorrow could repeat today’s afternoon rain with the sea breeze heating up and coming shore bringing rain. This could mean no biking since I start later on Sunday after church and Sunday school.

The splits break down.

Appian Way and Galaxy Blvd Bike Ride in Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2016

It has been at least a year since I biked in Roman Forest. I usually ride to Roman Forest Blvd at US59 and then turn around. Recently I tip toed into Roman Forest by riding in Tavola, the new mast planned community just over the railroad track going east on Roman Forest Blvd. Today I went into Roman Forest on what I call the short loop turning around at Appian Way. There is a longer loop going further east on Appian Way to Country Club Drive and then back to Roman Forest Blvd. I decided against the “longer” loop because the last time Appian Way east of Galaxy Blvd. the road was in need of repair. The asphalt had lots of pot holes and was rough. Once upon a time back in the 1970’s Roman Forest had great plans to be a master planned community but the developer ran out of money. Since then it has been recovering slowly. The Grand Parkway will probably help as will Tavola. The streets I was on were smooth with a nice shoulder after crossing over the Peach Creek bridge on Roman Forest Blvd. This used to be two lanes each direction with an esplanade but the city re-striped each direction to a wide lane and wide shoulder. Traffic is light and there are no stop lights, just a few stop signs. Back in the 1980’s when I lived in New Caney I rode to Roman Forest most evenings after work. From my home it was a good 22 to 25 mile ride. Today I biked 39.43 miles.

The weather was friendly today with 88 degrees, mostly cloudy and a light 4 mph breeze from the east. The light breeze allowed me to ride at a nice pace in almost any direction. I left home at 12:05 (I tired to leave before noon but just couldn’t get out the door). I made good time, stopping at the New Caney Chevron just long enough to refill my water bottle before continuing south. I was ahead of the school dismissal time at Briar Tree when I came to FM1314 not stopping at the Stripes station I planned on taking a break at the Oakhurst Community Pool and Park. My Edge 520 screen when I arrived at the pool.

5-13-2016 Oakhurst Pool

With the added distance from the Roman Forest loop I was 31.2 miles into the ride at the break. I sat on a park bench to eat my snack and drink the ice water from the Chevron station. While I was there I listened to a podcast on my phone and took these weather screen shots.

5-13-2016 Oakhurst Weather-1
5-13-2016 Oakhurst Weather-3
5-13-2016 Oakhurst Weather-2

After yesterday’s ride the Garmin Connect app for my Android phone had an update. Read the changes and didn’t see anything that looked bad nor anything that addressed the phone disconnect problem I seem to have on each ride. The new version is 3.6, upgraded from 3.51. To be safe before leaving on today’s ride I powered off my phone and powered it back on. In the past this seemed to help solve the 520 freezing. I am happy to report that I didn’t get one phone disconnect message while I was riding. The only one was when I went inside the Chevron station to get ice and water but as soon as I got back outside an alert popped up saying the phone was connected (I leave the 520 on the bike). I expect this because I was out of range. Maybe my problem has been fixed!!!

I did get caught in the last bit of Kings Manor school traffic as I rode back home but it wasn’t bad nor did it take much time to get through it. I stopped the ride on the 520 at 3:17 pm and LiveTrack ended when I saved the ride data.

More good biking weather in the forecast for Saturday. I plan on riding. So far I biked each day this week for total of 183.26 miles. May miles total 391.8.
