About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Reverse Roads and Streets Bike Ride to New Caney

Texbiker.net Posted on May 4, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMay 4, 2016

Today’s route was a combination of streets and roads I ride but in a very different order. Sometime in the past I rode part of this route but it has been a long time (prior to the Grand Parkway FM1314 overpass construction) since I biked to Gene Campbell road on FM1314. I had to come up with a new route name: “Oakhurst – Gene Campbell Road – Valley Ranch”. About 80% of the ride is the reverse of road and streets I normally ride. Before I left home at 11:54 I was going over the route in my mind trying to think of the turns and how long this ride might be. It turned out to be 43.31 miles long. I could’ve made it a couple of miles longer but when I saw how long it was going to be I stayed on my planned roads.

Before today’s ride the Garmin Connect app on my phone updated to version 3.51. I should have known better but I did not backup the ride using the Ride With GPS app at the start. At the 3.39 mile point I noticed the cadence was not being picked up from the sensor. I stopped and tried to check the status on the Edge 520. The 520 froze and I had to hold the power and right arrow buttons to get it to power off and back on. It asked if I wanted to save the ride, I said no and pushed start and the screen came up with all of the ride data still there. To be safe I started the Ride With GPS app on my phone in case this happened again. From that point the 520 behaved and recorded the ride without further issues.

The wind fought me almost from the beginning of the ride until I turned right off FM1314 onto Gene Campbell Blvd (or Road). Up to that point I thought my average speed would not get above 13.9 mph. Once I made that turn the wind was from my left or back and I could ride much faster. With all of the reverse roads I wasn’t sure where I might stop for a break. For awhile I thought it would be the Valley Ranch Texaco but when I got to New Caney at US59 I was at the 30.57 mile point and I stopped at the New Caney Mobil station at FM1485 and US59. It was nice to sit in the shade eating a snack and drinking ice water. This is my Edge 520 screen when I got there.

5-4-2016 New Caney Mobil Station

I estimated it was 12 miles from there to home. This is the first time in a long time that I stopped for a rest break at this station. On some rides I make a quick stop here to refill my water bottle on the way to the Stripes station. The weather was fabulous for biking except for the wind. I checked the weather on phone and the wind showed from the NW at 9 mph but when I got home at 3:33 the airport showed a NW wind at 13 mph with 18 mph gusts. No wonder it was so hard riding NW on FM1314. The weather while I was at the Mobil station.

5-4-2016 New Caney Weather-1
5-4-2016 New Caney Weather-2

Biking on Valley Ranch Parkway after leaving the US59 service road the building construction is in high gear. The work on a new Kroger, Sam’s Club and Academy Out & Sports have the vertical walls up. Due to the recent rain the road has some stretched with lots of dried mud.

My timing on school traffic was perfect today, all the traffic was gone or had not happened yet.

The great weather continues for several days and I plan on biking. I did wear a short sleeve jersey (a new Garneau red/black/white one) 0ver a long sleeve jersey becaause I thought the wind would be chilly. It was and it was a good choice.

Cedar Park Mountain Bike Trails

by LumberJack

www.texasoffroad.net

Most of us who enjoy riding dirt bikes also enjoy training and riding off road on our mountain bikes. For those of you who live in Cedar Park there is a election going on with early voting today May 2nd and tomorrow May 3rd. Election day is May 7th. It took me less than a minute to vote today. A few of us have been working with Maria Talamo for more than a couple of years. We are working towards building more hike and bike trails, and mountain bike trails (some extreme), and refining the BMX track at Milburn Park. The short term goal is to connect the Milburn Park area through the …

Only an 11 mile loop or so. I usually ride this on the hike/bike trail (this is asphalt) and the bike lane, so speeds are pretty limited. There’s really only one stretch that let’s you speed up at all, and that, of course, is where there is no shoulder at all on a high speed road with some traffic.Meet by the duck pond near the exit.

Day 22: Mesilla – El Paso: Dad’s last day biking
Saturday April 30, 2016
The ride today was lovely! We left the RV park at 6 and the cold made us both miserable, my fingers were numb and my toes were numb and dad was doing his under breath cursing thing. Then we came to the bridge over the Rio Grande and the sun was just coming over the jagged gothic mountains in the distance. I stopped to take a picture and I noticed 30-40 sparrows flying around. They would dive under the bridge and come up the other side. Fly out along the river and back, and made lots of circles around us. It was possibly the most beautiful things I’ve witnessed on this trip. We continued on through miles of Pecan groves, the ground beneath them was flooded with water and as the sun rose it’s golden light reflected on the waters. The branches of the trees hung over highway 28 and made it look like we were going through a tunnel of trees. We passed through small towns searching for an ope cafe to eat breakfast. 30 miles later we settled for an IHOP, the first thing we saw open. I was ravished and eating was a glorious affair. Food is such a sacred ritual on …

Broken Window Holds Up Bike Ride to Stroker Road

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2016

The first bike ride in May started later than usual when I rolled out the driveway at 2:14. The weather was fantastic after a cool front chased out the rain on Monday. It was 77 degrees when I got back home at 5:38 under a clear blue sky with the N 9 mph breeze keeping it cool. The late start reminded me of when I would ride after work before I retired. I got in front of the Kingwood High School dismissal traffic by a few minutes as I rode by on Kingwood Drive headed to Town Center and then W. Lake Houston Parkway on the way to the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route. I ended up riding 41.56 miles today. The delay in leaving was from waiting on the door glass repairman finish replacing a broken window in our master bedroom sliding door. He worked quickly and was here about one hour after arriving at 12:40 or so. It took longer to clean up the broken glass than it did to install the new window.

I dressed like it was early spring with shorts, short sleeve jersey (a new one from AGU) over a long sleeve jersey. I wore a new bright red tube scarf to complete the look, matching the colors of my Stradalli Red Pro 14 bike. This kept me nice and comfortable when the chilly wind caught me in the shade. It was especially appreciated when I was riding east with my front in the shade and the wind blowing from my left. The sun hitting my back didn’t quite offset the other.

At 29.73 miles I stopped at the Huffman Chevron to eat, rest my legs and refill my water bottle. My Edge 520 screen when I got there.

5-3-2016 Huffman Chevron

It would have been a little more comfortable if the sun was shining where I sat under the pump canopy but the late afternoon sun was behind the large tree on the west side for the station. I have started to see some “love bugs”. They are not the pesky large swarms, just a few here and there. While I was sitting at the station a pair flew into me and then bounced off and moved away. I can handle this amount but the large batches I ride into sometimes are bad, with a some getting in my mouth. Hopefully this is a light year for the “love bugs” or what some people call “swamp flies”.

The weather while I was stopped at the Chevron station in Huffman.

5-3-2016 Huffman Weather-1
5-3-2016 Huffman Weather-2

My mileage goal for May is 540 miles. Today’s ride is about 7% of my goal. The weather for the next several days is only going to get better for riding. Warming up to 80 or so with the clear sky staying around until the weekend. I plan on being out there taking it in.
