About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bat City Cycling Classic and Pace Bend Road Race

by Stephan Hirsch texasbikeracing.com

Belgium – home of delicious waffles, beers and the spring classics every cyclist looks forward to, while spending countless hours measured in sweat drops on the home trainer in the rainy, cold winter months. The last weekend of February released those guilty pleasures and an unbeatable Greg Van Avermaet was introduced to the crowds, who’s powerful sprint signalized the difference between yin and yang over the unbeatable Hulk in person of the current world champion Peter Sagan in the season opener Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
Meanwhile 4000 miles west of Gent; the Bat City Cycling Classic (@batcity) and Pace Bend Road Race (@Boneshaker_Proj) opened up the start of the spring classics in the heart of Texas. After completing a …

2016 Bike Camping in Texas

By Clark Crews www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 1: Houston, TX to Katy, TX (Hotel)
Saturday March 5, 2016, 37 miles (60 km) – Total so far: 37 miles (60 km)
I was a bit lazy this morning. I woke up and watched a bit of EPL (English Premier League Football for those not in the know). I rolled out of bed around 10am and started finishing the packing. I got out the door and on the road around 11:30am. First issue is getting out of this gigantic, anti-bicycling city called Houston. Luckily there has been a push for bicycle paths, so I was able to take the White Oak Bayou path up toward 43rd St. I took 43rd west which becomes Clay Rd. There is a “bike lane” on Clay, but I really don’t like them as cars don’t try to avoid you if …

New Stuff Bike Ride to FM686

Texbiker.net Posted on March 5, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMarch 5, 2016

Today was new stuff day. I wore new shorts (Bellwether Forma), a new long sleeve jersey (Voler) and a new short sleeve jersey (Primal). My wife pointed out there were some old things too: shoes, socks, helmet, sweat band and gloves. I decided to spurge. The shorts replaced a worn pair of Bellwether Forma shorts. The jerseys are additions to my riding wardrobe.

The route for today went east to FM686 following a slightly different “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route. I added a “U” shape riding on Fairlake Drive, Old Atascocita Road and FM2100 before going east on FM1960. On the west side of Lake Houston as I was riding east another biker was riding west getting ready to turn left on Atascocita Shores Drive where I came from. At the Ember Church on Fairlake Drive there was a group of bikers in the parking lot talking as I rode by. I am guessing they finished riding and were chatting about it. I think there were 5 or 6 bikers.

It was another great weather day for biking: 78 degrees, scattered clouds and a light breeze. Riding to the turn around at FM686 the wind provide some resistance but I managed to maintain a good pace at 17 to 18 mph. Riding up over the railroad overpass required some extra effort though. This is the first time on this route since October 7th 2015. The road seemed smoother on the 1 mile section with chip’n seal west of the overpass. I don’t think it has changed, just my memory of it. I stopped for a few minutes at the Dayton Food & Fuel store at FM686 before heading back to Huffman. I learned how to do a screen capture on my Garmin Edge 520 but the button also triggers a new lap. I need to do the capture while I am moving to get rid of the yellow border.

Edge 520

Riding west from FM686 to Huffman was easier and I increased my average speed by the time I got to Huffman. The overpass didn’t seem quite as hard this time. In Huffman I stopped at the Chevron to rest my legs for the last 11 miles home. The weather and Garmin screen shots while I was there.

I stayed at the Chevron a little longer than I planned because I added a bag of chips to my snack items. I figured the extra distance required the chips.

The ride started at 12:01. I was delayed because our security system decided to have a sensor error and I couldn’t find the missing sensor location. I finally found it by looking at the sensor numbers. It was one I forget to put on my list. I got back home at 3:28.

March miles are moving right along. I am up to 148 miles towards the 631 mile goal, under 500 to to go.

I will skip Sunday riding in order to watch the final season University of Cincinnati basketball game again SMU. Go Bearcats!!

Trail Reroute due to trail closure – The Rim and Dave’s Ditch area

brushycreekbuttholes.blogspot.com

The section at the top of The Rim (aka Rim Job) that goes along the back of the new houses is closed. This section of trail has been rerouted a few feet down hill. There are Park Boundary signs and blockages to help control this reroute. The trail that goes around Dave’s Ditch and enters the ditch from the west side near the bottom is also closed.
Due to the trail going 1) onto private property (an environmental easement) and 2) a historically sensitive area the county was required to close these sections off. It is very important to respect these official trail closures, if the county cannot manage to keep …

This weekend’s rides: Pflugerville Loop! Red Horn!

by Thomas steinerranchcycling.com

Good luck to our racing team luck at Lago Vista this weekend!
Tomorrow the rest of us will do a lap around Pflugerville which is about 65 miles (route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3955052). It looks like it will be a nice day for a ride!
Sunday is our usual Coffee Shop ride to Red Horn. It is 50 miles and is at a more relaxed social pace than our Saturday rides, but we typically finish with a 17mph average speed overall. While we make great efforts to keep the group together, this is NOT a no drop ride. If …

Spring has arrived in West Texas and so have windy conditions

by Bill Cullins www.gosanangelo.com

If you were out on your road bike last Thursday morning, you were rudely reminded that spring has arrived here in West Texas as you pedaled through north winds that gusted over 30 miles per hour.
Ask any road cyclist his or her opinion of riding into the wind and you’ll likely hear some words that can’t be printed in a family-oriented newspaper.
Like it or not, area cyclists will be dealing with wind on just about any given day during the next couple of months. March and April are the windiest months of the …

Ride Interview – Bluebonnet Express 2016 – Waller, Texas

By Peter Radowick www.wheelbrothers.com

Thousands of cyclists have long had the dates April 16-17 circled in red ink. That’s the weekend of the BP MS 150, a 180-mile trek from Houston to Austin. Some 13,000 pedalers are expected in what is billed as the largest ride of its kind in North America.
But first things first. With a month to go, there’s still a lot of heavy lifting cyclists must do. And that’s where the 27th annual Bluebonnet Express comes in. Next Sunday, March 13, some 2,000 cyclists are expected to depart Waller Stadium, northwest of Houston, on one of six …

Grand Parkway Ride- Ride On Brand New Freeway!

Cycling Space City cyclingspacecity.blogspot.com

Now is prime season for riding in Houston. The weather isn’t blazing hot and humid and there are a bunch of organized rides leading up to the largest charity bike ride in the USA the- MS 150, including the Bluebonnet Express and the Tour De Houston. Bluebonnet Express is a really well organized ride run by the Northwest Cycling Club and the Tour De Houston is nice because the route changes yearly and allows for seeing areas of Houston from the perspective of your bike you may not otherwise see. But I am really excited about …
