About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Organizers try to boost Austin participation in BP MS 150 bike ride

by Pam LeBlanc fitness.blog.austin360.com

Every spring, about 13,000 cyclists pedal from Houston to Austin as part of the BP MS 150 bike ride.
The strange thing? Only about 900 of those cyclists – less than 7 percent – come from Austin, even though the ride ends here with a big bash near the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
“People see it as a Houston event,” says Gena Hyde, regional director of communications for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which puts on the …

5 Things to Know about Houston’s New Bike Plan

Mary Blitzer urbanedge.blogs.rice.edu

The following is a guest blog post by Mary Blitzer, community and government affairs manager for the non-profit Bike Houston, which advocates for more and better access to high quality bike lanes and trails. The views expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research or its staff.
The Houston Bike Plan is here and you need to check it out. This is a plan for everyone who rides bicycles now and everyone else who’s bike has been hanging in your garage for the past 10 years.
The Houston Bike Plan is the plan for how to make bicycling in Houston safer and …

I attended the District E City of Houston Capital Improvement meeting tonight lead by Councilman Dave Martin. One of the presentations was about the Houston Bike Plan. I visited with two ladies at the information table before the meeting and after. During the question and answer time I asked about why the plan does not incorporate the CenterPoint utility easements. During the last legislative session a bill was passed limiting CenterPoint’s liability for trails on the easements. The Parks department director said the plan is still being developed and the easements will be utilized. These are important for north/south trails.

Bike plan will take shape slowly, supporters say

By Dug Begley and Mike Morris www.houstonchronicle.com

But funding is obstacle for proposal that would enhance trails, access

For the first time in more than two decades, Houston has a detailed strategy to improve bicycling – an ambitious but mostly unfunded plan to enhance bike culture in one of the nation’s most car-focused cities.
The Houston Bike Plan identifies $300 million to $500 million in improvements aimed at encouraging cycling and bringing more accessibility to every corner of the city via paths, off-street trails and safer lanes where …

Weigh in on Houston’s new bike plan

By Mike Morris www.chron.com

Houston’s first bicycle plan in 23 years lays out an ambitious vision to link nearly all residents and job centers to hundreds of miles of new off-street trails and improved on-street bike lanes.
That grand, decades-in-the-future vision would cost an estimated $300 million to $500 million and give Houston, all told, more than 1,600 miles of bike lanes and trails. The city has a ways to go: the planners …

Public Support Needed for Shepherd & Durham Bikeways

Calling everyone who wants safer connections to bayou trails and safe north-south bikeways in Houston!

A new connection to Buffalo Bayou Park along Shepherd and Durham is being proposed as part of a Rebuild project. The project proposes building buffered bike lanes on Shepherd and Durham from Dickson to Washington Ave. While this is just a small section of roadway, it represents a major step forward for Houston. Preserve proves popular with mountain bikers

By Lindsay Peyton www.chron.com

The Spring area has become a haven for cyclists with mountain bikers heading in droves to the 100 Acre Wood Preserve, located at Texas 249 at Jones Road, to take advantage of the hills, ravines and dips provided in the green space along Cypress Creek.
The preserve has two miles of trails through rolling, forested terrain, which connect with the 9-mile Cypress Creek Mountain Bike trail system in northwest Harris County.
The park borders Jones Road to the west, the northwest Harris County Municipal Utility District 230 water treatment facility to the east, Cypress Creek to …
