About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Gospel According to Bill

The Violet Crown Sports        violetcrown.org

It’s always good to review the basics every now and then; to go back to the fundamentals. In that regard, we are reprinting here the wise words of our friend Bill Reams, co-founder of the Bagel Ride, as stated in his epistle on group riding. Words to live by,
“As with religion, in group rides there are those that lead a righteous life at all times. Even if they do not attend regular services, when worshiping they will help those in need and provide a wheel for the less strong. They will stop and render aid when someone suffers a mechanical. They will follow golden rules such as ‘drop others only as you would have them drop you.’ When they attend church, they understand that …

Former UGA star Danny Ware fighting for body of son killed in Texas

www.ajc.com

Friday night, Danny Ware awoke to a phone call. The voice on the other end of the line, some 800 miles away, had world-shattering news.
The former University of Georgia football star’s son, 3-year-old Danny Josiah, had been killed.
“I didn’t know if it was a dream, a nightmare, or if I had just heard it wrong,” Ware said Wednesday. “But it turns out it was totally accurate.”
Now Ware said he is battling his estranged wife to bring the boy’s body back to Georgia.
According to information released by the Houston, Texas, Police Department and published media reports, Danny Josiah was killed while riding his bicycle in that city’s Kingwood neighborhood. The driver …

Who Knows If Fort Worth’s Bike Share Program Has Failed Like Seattle’s?

Durango Texas        durangotexas.blogspot.com

What you are looking at is a row of bikes parked somewhere on the Seattle waterfront.
I did not know, til yesterday, via an article in the Seattle Times titled Bike share’s failure deflates Seattle’s self-image that Seattle had a bike share operation, like the one that operates in Fort Worth.
That would make this blogging sort of a variant of our popular series of bloggings about …

Getting bent in Big Bend

By Terry Parsell        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Hope I got the flats out of the way early
Sunday January 31, 2016
things seem to be happening so fast now that I have set the date for the trip.
The bike needs to be taken to Fedex by Friday, that’s just 5 days away. I want to try it out one last time before I head out. I took this opportunity to change my tires. I had on 32c tires, but have since determined that most of the roads I’ll be on will be paved, and the 32c would be overkill. So I put my continental 700cx28c gator skins on.
For my training ride, I planned to go up to the top of Mill Mountain about a 3 miles climb with about 700 feet of elevation gain. I got to the parking lot where I planned to leave from. I aired up my tires and immediately felt a gush of air when I disconnected the pump. The valve had disconnected from the tube. I took out my spare tube and got it back on the back, and …

Austin: The Most Bike-Friendly City in Texas

by Clarence Eckerson Jr.        www.streetfilms.org

I was in Austin a few months ago for the NACTO 2015 Summit. While in town I was able to put together this look at what the city is doing to improve bicycling, including the dazzling 3rd Street curb-protected bikeway. Also captured on camera: many bike paths along the Pedernales River, car-free nights on 6th street, and the ridiculously long Halloween Social Ride, which is an exhilarating weekly nighttime bicycle excursion with …

No Hills But Plenty of Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2016 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2016

In the coastal plain around Houston mountain and hills do not exist but to make up for it we have wind. Today when I left home at 1:15 the wind was out of the SSW at 12 mph with 17 mph gusts. By the time I returned home the wind shifted to the SSE at 21 mph with 29 mph gusts. I noticed the wind direction change when I rode east over Lake Houston on FM1960. This was around 17 miles into the ride. Making the left turn from Old Atascocita Road onto FM2100 north the wind was at my back and I picked up my speed.

A quick stop art the Huffman Chevron for some fuel and water prepared me to ride the last 11 miles home. The ride was 21.29 miles at that point and my stay was about 20 minutes. I thought I might cool down while I was there but sitting in the sun helped to keep me warm. The weather screenshots while I was at the Chevron station.

2-1-2016 Huffman Weather-1
2-1-2016 Huffman Weather-2

The wind in the screenshot is not the same as above which is from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Leaving the station riding west on FM1960 the wind helped me. Riding over Lake Houston the wind was coming from my left and wasn’t as chilly as yesterday. This was a good thing. I dressed for wind today with a short sleeve jersey under a BikeTiresDirect jacket. The vented sleeves let the heat out just enough that I didn’t overheat. The temperature agreed with my home weather station and the airport.

I am beginning to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” on a regular basis. Below is a comparison of the last 4 times on this route. (click to enlarge it)

2-1-2016 Route Rides Comparison

I need to set my mileage goal for February. Using the same method as January, I averaged the last three February miles. 2013 was 370, 2014 was 375 and 2105 was 292. The average is 346 miles. That will my goal for February 2016.

The weather at the end of the ride. (click to enlarge) The image on the left also has the forecast for the coming days. Tuesday looks good for biking but Wednesday and following don’t look so good, cold front arrives.
