About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

San Antonio Wheelmen Founders Reflect on City’s Oldest Cycling Group

Katie Walsh        therivardreport.com

One ordinary Sunday morning in 1971, a group of cyclists decided to meet outside Broadway Bank for the first time. The small group, who later dubbed themselves the San Antonio Wheelmen,  shared a single, simple intention– to form an organized cycling group in San Antonio.
The group has grown over the last 45 years to become a full-fledged 330-member cyclist organization with bi-weekly rides, instructional classes and advocacy efforts. As the …

Houston, Texas. Bike shop claimed my bike was stolen

by MonsieurLeFabre        www.reddit.com

I purchased this bike from a used bike shop about a year ago. I called the number on their website went to their place of business and paid cash. I got a bill of sale and went on my way. At the time I didn’t live in Houston but I moved there recently.
Houston has a bike registration ordinance so I tried to register my bike but it came up as stolen. I called the bike shop and spoke to someone claiming to be the owner. He claims that he was out of the country for a few months and left his employee to manage the bike store. The employee sold bikes and ran off with the money after destroying all records.
I think that the transaction was legit and …

Haga fractures orbital bone, undergoes surgery

By Caley Fretz        velonews.competitor.com

American cyclist Chad Haga underwent surgery Saturday afternoon to repair wounds to his neck and chin, his Giant-Alpecin team said in a statement. The 27-year-old America, who hails from Texas, will likely require a future surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone.
Haga was one of six Giant-Alpecin riders to be struck by a motorist during a training ride on Saturday morning near Alicante, Spain. The accident was reportedly caused by a British woman who was …

Cyclists get a peek at restored Bahia Grande

By FRANK GARZA        www.valleymorningstar.com

LOS FRESNOS — Cyclists had the first peek of a restored portion of the Bahia Grande on a slow and relaxed 7.5 mile bike tour hosted by the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge yesterday afternoon.
Three guides led the cyclists on a caliche trail that passes through coastal prairies and salt water bays.
If the riders had brought along their binoculars, they might have even had the chance to see the rare and …

Get Out: Biking the Anthills in Terry Hershey Park

By Katharine Shilcutt        www.houstoniamag.com

Take in 500 unspoiled acres of Buffalo Bayou from your bike.

By now you’ve hopefully heard the news that I-1o East inside the Loop will be a horrorshow this weekend. With that in mind, head west, young men and women—west to Terry Hershey Park. The 500-acre park has rightly been called an “oasis” in the middle of the city, with nearly 6 miles of hike and bike trails along the western stretch of Buffalo Bayou that’s still as rustic as the day Houston was settled. (Okay, that’s a bit hyperbolic, but it’s certainly the most unmolested stretch of the …

Balance bikes sold in discount stores being recalled

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — About 29,000 Chillafish childrens balance bikes are being recalled because overinflated tires can cause the wheel rims to crack and send pieces of the plastic rim flying.
The balance bikes were sold by Amazon, Sams Clubs, Target and Toys RUs from November 2013 through November 2015 for between $55 and $80. Besides the approximately 29,000 bikes sold in the U.S., 268 were sold in Canada and are being recalled there as well.

Plethora of Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2016

I stepped out the back door around 12:30 to check on the temperature before getting ready to ride. It was nice and warm at 76 degrees. I went back inside and decided shorts, short sleeve jersey and long sleeve jersey would be right. I had waited for the three weather bands to clear out. The first one didn’t do much and the second one dropped rain for a few minutes. The third one slipped to the north missing Kingwood it seemed. By the time I got dressed, ate and got out the door at 1:17 I could tell the weather had changed. The wind was cooler and the temperature moved down to 75. The overcast sky though did not look threatening.

Riding around the corner I could tell the cool front had arrived. I turned around and went back home to add some clothing. Adding leg warmers, windbreaker jacket and full finger gloves I was back out the door.

The wind was out of the W at 16 mph with gusts to 29 mph as the front arrived.

1-21-2016 IAH Weather Start 111PM

I began to think the original route I planned on might not stick. Riding south to exit Kingwood I rode through light rain on Kingwood Drive as I passed Kingwood High School. The rain stayed with me until I was riding through Kingwood Greens on my way back to W. Lake Houston Parkway. By the time I turned right onto W. Lake Houston Parkway the stopped. Crossing over the San Jacinto river the road surface became wet as I left the bridge. At that point I changed my route to the “Kingwood to FM1960” and circled back home. The streets were wet until I got back on the bridge. The wind was in my face and I had to fight it most of the way home. To get some miles I didn’t take my usual route going into Elm Grove and Sherwood Trails.

When I got home at 2:46 the temperature had dropped to 65 degrees and the wind had kicked up from the NW at 20 mph with 37 mph gusts. And the sun peaked out from behind the clouds for a few minutes.

Even thought I didn’t ride as far as I planned January miles now stand at 214 leaving 45 miles to hit my goal of 259. The next two days are going to be cold below my riding cutoff. Next week the weather could warm up some. I will bike if it does.
