About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

UPDATE: Man hit on bike was “highly intoxicated”

By STEVEN RAY HERNANDEZ        sbnewspaper.com

A San Benito man was placed under arrest Monday evening just several minutes after being struck by a vehicle.
According to witnesses at the scene, a Maroon, late model Mitsubishi Eclipse was exiting the parking lot of the Harley Davidson motorcycle shop and struck the “older” man, who was riding against …

In The Oil Bust, This Texas Tycoon Sees A Land Of Opportunity

Christopher Helman        www.forbes.com

After selling 7 deals in 7 years for $7 billion, press-shy wildcatter Trevor Rees-Jones is better equipped than anyone to pick through the wreckage of the oil and gas bust.
As Trevor Rees-Jones steps down from his plane, two black labs bound out after him, followed by his wife, Jan, and her terrier. It was a short hop from Dallas to the runway at Cook Canyon Ranch, on 26,000 acres between Fort Worth and Abilene. They have a bigger ranch on 58,000 acres a little farther north, but this one is nicer. Same deal with the turbo-prop they flew in on. …

… Rees-Jones doesn’t need to do more deals. He could just spend his days riding his mountain bike, overseeing construction of his hunting lodge, expanding his collection of Western art (think Remington and Russell) and planning the next Party Barn bash. But that isn’t enough for this king of fracking. “I always enjoyed playing poker,” he says. “But after I got to drilling I lost my interest in playing poker. My risk-taking was satisfied by drilling wells.” …

Leg Warmers Stayed Home on this Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 19, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 19, 2016

The ride started out in the sun but I started to doubt my decision to not wear leg warmers. This was at 12:17 which is a little earlier than I have started this month. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I wanted to ride 31+ miles and I ended up biking 33.8 miles. I increased January’s mileage to 196 leaving 63 miles to reach my 259 mile goal for the month.

Even though I left the leg warmers home I wore regular gloves, shorts, short sleeve jersey, long sleeve jersey and windbreaker jacket. I was warm but when I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a quick break I unzipped my jacket the chill from the wind blowing against my wet jerseys made me find a place out of the wind. I was 22.5 miles into the ride at that point and it was 1:52 when took the break. After eating a Kashi Trail Mix bar and miniature donuts I refilled my water bottle and headed back to Kingwood. The weather screenshots at the Chevron station:

1-19-2016 Huffman Weather-1
1-19-2016 Huffman Weather-2

Riding west over Lake Houston on FM1960 the wind was very cool coming off the water. My bare legs wanted to reach the west shore and get among the houses.

Today’s ride was the longest of the year so far. A comparison of the last 4 rides from Garmin Connect.

1-19-2016 Garmin Connect 4 Ride Comparison

The weather forecast for Wednesday and Thursday include rain but not a high percentage. It might be warm enough to ride with temperatures just below 70 degrees. So far the weather has been good enough for me to ride more miles this year (196) than January 2015 (141 miles). I have 12 days to ride 63 miles. Maybe the weather will cooperate!

Cyclists distrubite blankets to those in need in El Paso

by Andrew J. Polk    www.kvia.com

Dana Peak keeps getting better!

by MadDuc916        www.bikemojo.com

Got a chance to spend some time at Dana Peak riding with some buddies today. The trail at Dana Peak just keeps getting better. The trail today was in pretty good shape, except for a few muddy spots. The trail has now been expanded in multiple areas. The one niner trail runs from Dana Peak to Stillhouse Park is a great trail with something for just about everything, some down hills, some cool climbs, and some really fun sections. Nothing more difficult than Intermediate, but a beginner with decent fitness can still enjoy the …

SRAM RED eTap – Close up look, more rides & actual weights!

By Tyler Benedict        www.bikerumor.com

When we attended the official SRAM Red eTap launch last fall, we provided an in-depth look at the design and development process and first impressions.
Now, they’re closer to production, with an initial run of “P1” units ready for use in the wild. The “P1” designation, as explained by SRAM’s technical marketing manager Nate Newton, means they’re “the final preproduction run. The idea with the P1 run is that everything: tooling, production lines, parts, are identical to production, but everything gets checked over and …
