About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Back on the Kickr

Ray Garza        rgvcycling.com

It is the start of a new year and the Christmas holidays are over and done with. Like many other folks I gained weight during those times. it’s a shame after all that hard work I did last year. The good news is that I didn’t gain too much weight, so I don’t have far to go to get back where I was before. The other good news is that I got my Wahoo Kickr back after loaning it out to friends of mine during the …

Home again: A south Texas microadventure

by Katherine Fuller        dirtragmag.com

With apologies to Bill Bryson.
I come from San Antonio. Somebody had to.
There are generally two types of people born in San Antonio: those who can’t imagine leaving, and those who can’t wait to. Raised by two Midwesterners who often seem bewildered as to how they ended up as residents of the Lone Star State in the first place, I naturally grew up with a disposition that put me in the latter camp. Despite 20 years there, I didn’t get interested in true mountain biking during that time and never explored the existing singletrack. This holiday season, I figured it was …

Zwift / Wahoo Kickr Basement Trainer Setup

by Scott Jangro        bikenoob.com

It appears that 2016 is the year of the smart trainer. Last year, smart trainers like the Wahoo Kickr have appeared on the market. These trainers connect to your computer or phone via ANT+ or Bluetooth, and allow you to control the resistance either manually, or with a software program.
Conversely, “dumb” trainers have no resistance or require that you set it manually. Having any resistance at all makes for a tough ride. Like riding uphill. Forever. Cycling is much more dynamic than that — killer hills always have the downhill on the other side to look forward to. Smart trainers bring that indoors.
The perfect combination is that there are now software apps like Zwift and …

First Bike Ride of 2016 – Kingwood Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2016

The sunshine beckoned me to ride but the temperature could’ve a little warmer. When I left home at 1:52 on temperature gauge reported 66 degrees but the one in the shade said 62. I think the 62 was closer to being right. As I rode the Kingwood trails the shaded portions made me glad I bundled up with a thermal jersey over a short sleeve jersey covered by a windbreaker jacket. I wore leg warmers with the shorts and my legs were toasty. I opted for half-finger gloves and they were okay but my fingers could tell when they weren’t in the sun.

This is the first ride in 2016. The weather has not been friendly to my riding so far with overcast skies and temperatures at best in the 50’s, which is below my 60 degree lower tolerance level.

A lot of walkers on the trails today most with dogs but no problems with either of them. I do tend to startle people when I approach them from the their blind side even when I call out “on your left”. I think many of them are not listening or have earbuds.

I can tell I need more riding. Pedaling the Motobecane 700HT MTB’s 32 pounds takes extra effort. I long for the road bike.

Weather at the end of the ride.
