City hosts Bike Tour of Brownsville

On Tuesday, December 8, 2015, the City of Brownsville hosted League of American Bicyclists Vice President of Programs Bill Nesper, along with representatives from BikeTexas, for a bicycle tour of Brownsville.
Representatives from the City of Brownsville, Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB), and the University of Texas School of Public Health, Brownsville Regional Campus (UTSPH) participated in the bike tour that featured several destinations, including: Prax Orive Jr. Park, the Belden Trail, La Plaza at Brownsville, and Market Square.

From Sunny to Overcast on This Bike Ride

Riding to Huffman was a struggle on today’s ride. When I left home at 12:15 the wind was gusting to 19 mph. The temperature was rotating between 77 and 78 degrees and the sky was mostly cloudy. I was riding the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” for the umpteenth time this year. This route is an easy one to ride allowing me to exit Kingwood easily. I was on my Stradalli RP-14 road bike which I like to ride. With the strong wind I didn’t set a great average speed on the way to Huffman but after a 25 minute rest stop at the Huffman Chevron I took advantage of the tailwind to make up some of the time I lost riding into the wind. It was 20.94 miles into the ride when I stopped at the Chevron station around 2:45. The weather while I was there.

While I was at the Chevron station I could see the sky turning gray overcast to the west. I rode the 11+ miles from Huffman to home without the sun I enjoyed on the way there. Without the sun it felt cooler. I wore a long sleeve jersey but I wished I had a short sleeve one too for those last 11 miles.

Another cool front is supposed to pass through during Tuesday night. I don’t know if this will affect my riding or not.

End of Year Reflection 2015

My goodness it’s already December and 2015 is about to be put on the shelf. Where has it all gone? Apparently it has gone under my wheels, at least over 4100 miles worth. I am surprised that I have cycled that much this year. Honestly, I had no idea I have pedaled until I looked up the number on Strava. Another 8 miles after sunset complete. That puts me at about 200 miles for July cycling. Talked with a NISD police officer working security at the Ferris Athletic complex and he said I have more lights on my bike than his patrol car.
