About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video Premiere: Fr512 Diggers with Attitude

www.ridestoke.com

The “Diggers with Attitude” and “Builder” screening. More popular than Matt Damon and James Bond combined!

Freeride512 builds and rides progressive mountain bike trails and features in and around Central Texas. We educate mountain bikers on the disciplines of all-mountain, downhill, and freeride mountain biking and help riders to progress their skills.

The post below is where I found the video above

Must watch – Central Texas trail building scene – Austin, TX – Diggers with Attitude

by trailbrain        forums.mtbr.com

If you are an Austin local or central Texas rider these are just some of the folks building our scene for the love of riding. Mountain bikers build because they want more to ride and want to progress as riders. This is not one riders story. It is a story for all of us as a mountain bike community. Cheers to …

51st Gets a Bike Lane to the Trail! (Oh, and I hear we’re gold, eh?)

Austin on a Bike        austinonabike.com

The word on the street, and I hope to confirm this myself with pics soon, is that 51st Street is now striped with our long-awaited bike lanes, buffered at that, from 51st & Springdale all the way over to 183. Perhaps that section between Springdale and Manor, too?
I’ll report back.
In other news you’ve already heard about, likely, Austin was conferred a “Gold” status this past week, as doled out by the League of American Bicyclists. Overall, Texas ranks #30 in the county, with 7 “bicycle friendly” communities.
In a Statesman article on the subject, Pam LeBlanc writes that “Mercedes Feris, executive director of Bike Austin, points to the city’s more than 250 miles of bike lanes, including 30 miles of protected and buffered bike lanes, as reasons for the city’s new high ranking.”
It’s funny, because I was chatting recently with a local bike shop owner …

Race to the Bottom: USAC faces new challenger

By Caley Fretz        velonews.competitor.com

Alex Montoya organizes bike races for a living. They’re small events that look a whole lot like most people’s first race — a few hundred locals lining up on a weeknight, points or prestige taking a backseat to the thrill of a start gun and the joy of post-race stories.
Montoya, 25, put on 40 of these races in 2015, trying to earn with volume what he can’t from margins. Daily USA Cycling permits range from $100 to $700, depending on race size, and insurance costs $3.60 per person. Montoya’s entry fees are just $20. Shrink the margins and he suffers. Shrink them too much and the races die. There’s no way around it. And though Montoya promotes races only within his home state of Texas, his challenges are familiar to …

Now Back To Regularly Scheduled Cycling – Humble, TX to Liberty, TX

www.marksmidlifecrisis.com

After spending the past 12 days NOT cycling, it felt good to wake up this morning knowing that I would once again find myself back on the road. Yes, last week was a fantastic week. And yes, I miss Cuba, and Marleah, and perhaps the rum. But getting back on the bike would be a good way to take my mind off such things.
Thanks to Robin and Sheila!
That said, today did not pan out the way I would’ve liked. At all. No, nothing terrible happened. There were no mechanical issues. No close encounters with vehicles. But there was rain. A lot of rain. Not when I …

Plano joins list of nation’s best bicycle-friendly communities

By TOMMY CUMMINGS        www.dallasnews.com

Cyclists begin their biking tour of Plano at the rear of a shopping center on Coit Rd in Plano. The city was one of 54 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Community members. Richardson was chosen to the group in June.
If anyone can speak to the emergence of Plano as a bicycle-friendly community, it’s resident David Jones.
“It’s really on the move in Plano,” Jones said.
Plano recently was recognized with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community award, joining 371 communities in all 50 states that have been given the award.
The city was one of …

The Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies women’s squad will look quite different in 2016 as the American pro team will feature all new riders, except one: Jasmin Glaesser. Otherwise, the orange-and-black team brings on nine new riders, including notables such as Emma White, a two-time silver medalist in the junior races at Richmond worlds, and cyclocross talent Elle Anderson.
