About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

How BCycle plans to triple bike-sharing in Houston

By Ryan Holeywell        www.houstonchronicle.com

From a spartan office in Houston’s East End, Will Rub — along with just a handful of employees — oversees the bike sharing network that’s helping to transform parts of the city.
When Houston’s BCycle system debuted in 2012, there wasn’t much to it — just 18 bikes spread across three stations.
Now, thanks to a $3.5 million award from the Houston-Galveston Area Council, the system is poised to add 71 new stations (it has 29 today) and 568 bikes (on top of the 190 it has now) within the next three years.
In reality, Rub hopes to spend all the money within the …

Abandoned railroad corridor sought for future regional hike, lbike trail system

by Faith Harper        www.tylerpaper.com

The possibility for a regional hike and bike trail is expanding with the approved acquisition of an abandoned railway that connects Whitehouse and Troup.
Monday evening, the Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization approved moving the purchase of 7.25 acres of an abandoned Union Pacific rail bed into its short-term and long-term plans. The land comes in at a $500,000 price tag.
Transportation improvement projects must be included in the MPO’s plans to be eligible for grant funding. The organization focuses on regional transportation planning, which also includes bike trails, walking paths and public transit.
The Northeast Texas Regional Mobility Authority would own and …

The Case Against Bright-as-the-Sun Flashing Bike Lights

By Josh Cohen        nextcity.org

Daylight Saving Time is over. Darkness falls before you can start your evening commute. And all around the country, a scourge is rearing its ugly, eyeball-searing head.
I’m talking about the insanely bright, flashing headlights that are now standard equipment for bike commuters. During rush hour in bike-heavy Seattle where I live it is impossible to ride more than a few minutes at a stretch without getting blasted with another retina-shocking dose of …

Trail Foundation announces plans for new span beneath Congress Bridge

by Pam LeBlanc        fitness.blog.austin360.com

A year and a half after the opening of the boardwalk, a stretch of the Butler Trail along the north shore of Lady Bird Lake is preparing for a makeover.
A new 264-foot section of the hike-and-bike trail will extend over the water for 184 feet. The span will eliminate a blind corner and make that portion of the trail accessible to those with disabilities. It will include a jutted-out viewing area where people can watch residents of the city’s famous bat colony emerge on summer nights.
The $2.5-million project is expected to open in about two years. A concept design is finished and contractors are …

…And Lest We Forget

by Johnny        bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

How To Become More Grounded in Our Bike Obsession
When we first get on a bike, we are not paying any attention whatsoever to the machine that is below our seat. Our objective is simple, to get from one place to another while exercising. Along the way, some of us start to pay attention to the nuances of the experience. We start describing our rides as harsh, compliant, fast, slow, labored and the list goes on and on. In our search for a heightened and more enlightened cycling experience, we start to shell out the dollars on parts, components and eventually complete bikes that in our minds will bring us closer to the desired outcome. Some of us are collectors by nature, some with addictive personalities that get …

Overcast Sky and Borderline on Today’s Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 10, 2015 by Rick AnkrumNovember 10, 2015

Today was a borderline ride day. Borderline in that I could wear a long sleeve jersey and be comfortable whenever I stopped moving or wear a short sleeve jersey and not be so comfortable until I get warmed up. I rode under an overcast sky with the temperature around 75 degrees at my home. The wind was light which helped it not to feel too cool.

Riding the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for the 8th time this year I went 33.03 miles. This route is a variation of the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I change up some of the streets around FM1960 for variety.

With the year winding down riding has slowed some since I am only 123 miles away from my goal of 6500 miles for the year. Plus I am working on a couple of projects at home. With a month and a half left I think I can ride 123 miles but the weather has cooperate some. So far there haven’t been any days this fall where the daytime temperature is below my 60 degree cutoff.

The Garmin Connect website removed the embed link option so I am substituting RideWithGPS.com along with Strava.com.

Stopping at the Huffman Chevron I sat at the edge of the pump canopy hoping the heat would filter through the overcast sky and not cool down too much. At that point I was at the 21.1 mark in the ride. I was late enough that I should miss the heavy traffic on Kingwood Drive by the time I got there from Huffman. The weather while I was at the Chevron station in Huffman.

11-10-2015 Huffman Weather-1
11-10-2015 Huffman Weather-2

When I reached Kingwood Drive the traffic was gone on the eastbound lanes but I had to wait a couple of minutes on the westbound lanes to have an opening to cross. I got home at 3:46 (I left home at 12:54).

Tomorrow the rain chance kicks up during the middle of the day so I may not be biking then.
