About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Nov 1 Crockett TX…yet

Peg and Jan Bicycle tour 2015        cassh015.com

Rain again today and it was constant this morning and off and on all afternoon. P&J went back to Palistine Texas to do a little shopping. There is nothing in Crockett I guess.
Livingston Texas tomorrow. (We hope) Forecast looks good with winds out of the north.  It looks likw 4 days of riding left and we will be in Galviston. Then a few days …

A Ride to Remember

By Ken Kuntz        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 26: Kountze, TX to Coldspring, TX
Sunday November 1, 2015, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,194 miles (1,922 km)
Starting Point: Kountze, TX
Ending Point: Coldspring, TX
Riding Conditions: Light to moderate rain most of the ride. Light winds.
Miles Today: 61
Quote for the day: “I am an optimist. But I am an optimist who takes his raincoat.” — Harold Wilson (1916-1995)
Sometimes it’s hard to be an optimist. There was an 80% chance of rain today. That meant there was a 20% chance of staying dry. I’ll take those odds.
I got an early start, mainly because of the change to Standard Time. But it wasn’t raining, so time to go. We returned to Kountze, and got the bike ready to go.
I was no more than 5 minutes into the ride when the rain started. Just light rain. Light rain is no problem, but the forecast contained a chance for more severe weather. I pushed the pace.
The rain continued all the way to mile 30, but then the sky brightened a bit. Could that be the end of …

Embrace changing weather conditions in your workouts

by Bill Cullins        www.gosanangelo.com

The weather experts say that a strong El Niño is developing that could bring us a cooler and wetter than normal winter.
Colder and wetter than normal? If that forecast pans out, this could be the best winter in years for cycling and running.
Jonathan Jennings, project meteorologist for the West Texas Weather Modification Association, says that “Although El Niño does not always bring wet and cool weather to Texas, long-term climate models continue suggest a wet and cooler winter this year with …

Oct 31 Crockett Tx

Peg and Jan Bicycle tour 2015        cassh015.com

About 40 miles in today. Fairly easy ride but due to rain in the morning P&J got a late start. Crockett is oe of those towns that seem to be deteriating at least through the center of town. The area is beautiful with rolling hills dressed in pine and hardwood trees. I’t’s a lot like the hill country east of San Antonio and Austin. The difference might be the season. In the spring the hills are covered with blue bonetts.

Cycling History in San Angelo

Team San Angelo        bcullins.blogspot.com

Cyclists have been riding the roads in and around San Angelo for the last 130 or so years.   The modern  bicycle was invented in 1861, and by 1885 bicycles were getting to be quite common on San Angelo streets.
In May of 1888, the Standard-Times reported that bicycle fever was spreading throughout the city. Riding a bicycle during the early days resulted in numerous incidents or questions about bicycles. The newspaper reported that on February 20, 1886, a Mr. Frank Harris ran his bike into a horse drawn phaeton owned by a Dr. Early, causing quite a bit of confusion and uproar. The San Angelo city council voted to ban bicycles from sidewalks in 1892, and Mr. J. Harris suggested in …

A Ride to Remember

By Ken Kuntz        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 24: Merryville, LA to Kountze, TX
Friday October 30, 2015, 66 miles (106 km) – Total so far: 1,133 miles (1,823 km)
Starting Point: Merryville, LA
Ending Point: Kountze, TX
Riding Conditions: Temps in the low 60’s early, warming into the high 80’s. Light winds in the morning, with moderate easterly winds in the afternoon (favorable).
Miles Today: 66
Quote for the day: “You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas.” — Davy Crockett
Today was another day of great weather and road conditions, with sub-par scenery. I’ll take that.
However, there was one scenic highlight: crossing the Sabine River into Texas. That was beautiful! Hey – we’re back!
Merryville is just 5 miles from the Texas border, so our crossing happened early in our ride. Liz rode on another 10 miles, turning back a few miles past the town of Bon Wier. I went on through Bleakwood (a bleak, wooded area), and on to Kirbyville. The 15 miles of road between Bon Wier and Kirbyville was the only part of today’s ride that had no shoulder. I like …

Eastbound from California

By Kevin OLeary        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 27: Langtry to Del Rio, TX
Friday October 30, 2015, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 1,286 miles (2,070 km)
The forecast was for rain overnight and there were a few times during the night when it rained lightly. In the morning the tent was damp and packed up easily. The sky was also just partly cloudy and the ground was relatively dry except for a few small puddles of water.
It was also significantly warmer here in Langtry than what I was used to. During the night I slept in my silk sleeping bag liner because it was too warm to get inside the bag. And in the morning I began cycling with only a single shirt on and my regular cycling gloves (with no hat under the helmet).
Nora makes coffee each morning and she offered to make me a cup — something that I couldn’t refuse. She was headed to a picnic table outside of the Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center and I agreed to meet her there at 8am for coffee. I was a couple of minutes late but she graciously made me a cup of hot French-pressed coffee that was very good. Then I filled my water bottles, we said our goodbyes, and I was on …

Day 26: Sanderson to Langtry, TX
Thursday October 29, 2015, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,224 miles (1,970 km)
Sanderson is a quiet town at night and I slept well. I got up at 7am and had my bike loaded and ready to go a few minutes after 8am. As I was putting on my helmet Danny came over to my room and offered to make me a cup of chai tea before I left. I couldn’t turn this down and so I waited a few minutes for him to prepare it. And it was worth the wait; the chai was just like the real thing that I had drank while I was in India (and not the sweet stuff commonly found in the U.S.). After thanking Danny for the umpteenth time for his generosity I finished the chai and got on the road.
Hwy 90 east of Sanderson was a decent road. There was no wind (yet) and …

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31 – Nov. 1, 2015 Spooky CX …

10/31 and 11/1 Rides! Dam Loop! Tour de Donut!

by Thomas        steinerranchcycling.com

Last weekend’s weather sucked. Saturday has a chance of rain… so keep your fingers crossed! Assuming the weather cooperates, we will roll out of Cups & Cones at the usual 7:30am for the Reverse Dam Loop. We don’t typically do this ride since it is so common for the area, but it has been a while for many of us. There will be options and discussion for adding on if desired.
Sunday is a special ride that I hope everyone in the club attends: Tour de Donut (http://tourdedonutaustin.com)! It is a short ride (about 25 miles) where riders (solo or in teams) race …
