Texas Hill Country Bike Tour – Velo View Tours

Just got back from a 5-day vacation/3-day bike tour in the Texas Hill Country with the Velo View Bike Tours company. This was simply the best bike trip I’ve ever been on by far.
The routes were 38, 55 and 45 miles over three days with a decent amount of climbing. It was the first time I’ve encountered 17-20% grades before and they were much funner to go down than to go up
The whole trip was fully supported by the Velo View tour van. They picked us up in Austin, then started the ride in Blanco, rode to Luckenbach, were shuttled to a winery for lunch, then on to the ranch cabins that we called home base for the weekend. Dinner was at …

The 2015/16 North Texas Cyclocross Race Series has a few simple rules governing race logistics, racer rankings and schedule.
The purpose of this new series is to continue the growth of the grassroots cyclocross racing in North Texas. The series is aimed at parlaying weeknight racing excitement and transforming it into weekend races too. Each race shall closely follow a similar race schedule, prize purse, racer entry fee and course tape design. Why 19mph? Why not set a 20+mph average speed as a personal goal? First of all, I can’t speak about what I have never experienced. In all of my 8 or more years of cycling recreationally, I have yet to do a 20mph average speed on a ride, group or solo. I have soloed 18 to 19mph riding alone doing distances of over 20 miles. Second of all, anyone averaging over 20mph on a solo ride or in a group setting has improved to a whole other level. Averaging 20+mph consistently on long rides sets the rider up for racing and holding 24mph averages in criteriums. The difference between an 18-19mph average and a 20mph average is what separates the riders from the racers in the cycling world.  I have enough experience to offer suggestions to my readers on …

Ah, what a night’s sleep! The Days Inn gave me a pillow-top king-size mattress only a month old.
I only saw one car on Route 66 for my first 90 minutes today, and it continued that way the rest of the day. Not more than one car an hour all day long. But it was a slow day, more headwinds and all uphill. I started the day at 2100 feet and ended it at 3200 feet, with lots of rollers in between.

The Lake McClellan Campground last night was full of goatheads. Extra vigilance was required. It turns out that my Crocs are excellent goadhead collectors. Why Am I Doing This?

Over the past year, I got back on my bike. A lot of things pushed me back, or pulled me back.
Probably, the biggest pull was that I realized that I am happier when I am riding. Not just while I am riding, but throughout my whole life if I am riding. Somehow, I forgot about that over the past too many years in a row.
So, a year ago, at the beginning of July, I decided that I weighed too much, that my blood pressure was too high, and that I wasn’t doing anything special for myself. I pulled out my Trek 5020, which is a wonderful carbon fiber road bike from the late nineties. I had ignored it for a couple of years, so I had to get it tuned, replace the tires, etc. And then it was great again!
A few years ago, I moved from Houston, which was not a great place for bikes, to San Antonio, which is a wonderful place for bikes. Without realizing it, when we bought our house, on the north side of San Antonio, we ended up a block away from a road with bike lanes that connects to other roads with bike lanes, which leads to the Hill Country, and connects to parks with bike trails.
The more I rode, the deeper I was pulled, and the longer my rides became.

Riding Lubbock’s streets on a bike should be a hobby reserved for adrenaline junkies. The last time I tried to ride a bike through Lubbock I was almost clipped by an oversized truck speeding along Quaker Ave. The driver had swerved just enough to pass me, and my bike and I were almost blown off the road. As the truck passed, I almost swear I could see the driver, with a cigarette in one hand, Bud Light in the other, laughing at me with his beady little eyes.
