About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dallas officials to get update on bike lanes, ‘complete streets’ efforts

By BRANDON FORMBY        www.dallasnews.com

The vast majority of Dallas’ small but growing network of on-street bike lanes is made up of shared lanes, stretches where bicyclists must share the same concrete as vehicles. City staffers, though, hope that several planned projects will dramatically increase the share of lanes that are primarily dedicated to bicyclists.
“People prefer to have the dedicated bike lanes,” said Jared White, the city’s bicycle transportation manager.
In 2012, Dallas had eight miles of on-street bike lanes. That network has since grown to 39.3 miles, with 18.6 percent of those dedicated lanes. Within several years, the goal is …

El Paso rolls out bicycle sharing program

Associated Press        www.theeagle.com

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A West Texas city has rolled out its bicycle sharing system.
El Paso’s B-Cycle program began Wednesday. The pay-to-ride project, called SunCycle, includes 80 bicycles at eight solar-powered sites in the downtown and University of Texas-El Paso areas.
The $720,000 system is part of the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority, with local and state financial support.
Backers say bicycle sharing is affordable, clean and …

Cycling paves El Paso man to healhy lifestyle

Victor R Martinez, El Paso Times

The memories El Paso cyclist Luis Bustamante has of his first cycling event, the Chile Pepper Challenge, are not fond ones.
Bustamante took to the road four years ago wearing cargo shorts and riding the 40-mile course on a mountain bike.
“I wasn’t prepared for it at all,” said Bustamante, 39. “We had done 40 miles before but I didn’t expect it to go that bad.”
He also weighed 235 pounds and was a smoker and …

Two-wheel tally: City looks to improve bicycle infrastructure

By Julian Gill        www.dentonrc.com

Doug Campbell watches a cyclist ride by as he waits at the corner of Coit Street and Congress Street on Tuesday evening, counting the number of cyclists and pedestrians going by . The city’s bike count continues this weekend.
For the first time, Denton will have reliable data on how many people ride their bikes around the city.
In conjunction with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project, bike counts are being conducted this week at eight specific locations in Denton. The goal is to identify certain areas where the city can reinforce bicycle infrastructure, according to the bicycle and pedestrian coordinator Julie Anderson.
“It’s a good time to get …

Men riding bikes from Detroit to Austin, TX for charities

by Kristin Pierce        www.wxyz.com          Video

DETROIT (WXYZ) – Dane Wittig, Tyler Wittig and Colin McConnell are riding bikes from downtown Detroit to Austin, Texas. The three men are raising awareness and money for three “underdog” charities: Chive Charities, a nonprofit that helps veterans and people with rare medical conditions, the Coalition of Dwarf Advocacy and Healing Vercammen Hearts, a group that benefits three young boys born with congenital heart defects.
The men refer to these organizations as “underdogs” because you don’t hear that much about them, but they still need help.
“We wanted to do it and build a sense of …

Waco Riding in Cameron Park – Applies to all mtb riders really

by drmoreau        forums.mtbr.com

I am vice president of the Waco Bicycle Club and hear all kinds of stuff. Some of my friends are runners, so I hear their views too. Recently, mountain bikers in Cameron Park have been hauling butt down trails and essentially forcing runners and hikers off the trail. This runs counter to IMBA rules and common sense. The runners/hikers have felt in danger as a mtb rider bombs down a trail at speed and its either, jump out of the way, or be severely injured. This stuff is going on at 10 a.m. on Saturday and other times when trails are …

Twelfth Conquer the Coast likely to sell out by race day

by Julie Garcia of the Caller Times        www.caller.com

Mark Scott is fascinated by the potential Corpus Christi has in becoming a great bicycling community.
The Corpus Christi city councilman rides more than an hour every morning, adding up to 80 miles a week. He has logged more than 10,000 miles in four years.
Every ride is different, he said.
“A Corpus Christian can ride 365-days-a-year; the sights and sunrises over the bay are amazing,” Scott said. “I’ve seen bobcats, raccoons and cardinals while riding in town. I have much better …

Ian Dille’s Road Back to Racing

texasbikeracing.com

Ian Dille lives in Austin, Texas. He rides for SuperSquadra and is a mentor for their Super Jets development team. He frequently writes for Bicycling magazine and his latest book “The Cyclist’s Bucket List: A Celebration of 75 Quintessential Cycling Experiences” was released in July.
How I Got Healthy
The injuries started some time in high school, if I’m honest with myself. I was captain of the cross-country team but seemed to spend more time in the trainer’s room than on the running track. By my senior year, I only ran three days a week—my coach was wise enough to hold me back, to keep me from running myself into the ground.
No one wants to think of him or herself as injury-prone. I had a high pain threshold, I wanted to believe, …

This city just looks different from the seat of a bicycle.
You see the people, the slow change in the skyline as buildings sprout beneath cranes. The birds, the squirrels, the dogs.
The quirky stuff, too. The family of metal goats that lives in front of a house on Shoal Creek Boulevard. The cyclist with a pair of dachshunds tucked into her backpack. The two-wheeled laundry delivery service.
I’ve been riding a bike to work most days for seven or …

Your First CX Race

by Bill Cullins        bcullins.blogspot.com

Cyclocross season is getting underway and the local Longhorn CX Series starts in three weeks, so some of you are getting ready for your first-ever cyclocross event.
Even if you’ve done other types of races such as mountain bike, road or triathlon events, you’ll quickly find that CX is a different beast. The good news is that there are some things you can do to make your initial cyclocross experience better.
Let’s start with training.  Although three weeks isn’t long enough to significantly improve your fitness if you’ve spent the summer doing easy social rides, you can develop skills and start upping your fitness over the next few weeks. Three workouts that will make you faster (or at least reduce …
