About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Police Looking for Bicycle Theft Suspect

www.kbtx.com

Video

COLLEGE STATION – Two people have been arrested in connection with bicycle thefts from the Texas A&M campus, and police are still looking for a third suspect.
A woman reported her Specialized Hardrock mountain bike stolen from the West Campus Parking garage in July. She told police she had locked it up with a cable lock, returned four days later and found it gone.
A&M police checked out security footage and …

WTB’s new sit-bone measurement tool is used on the rider’s own bike

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany (BRAIN) — WTB is showing off its new Saddle Fit System at Eurobike. The system is designed to steer a rider towards suggested saddles by using a pressure sensitive pad that is placed over the rider’s existing saddle to measure sit-bone position.
“By allowing our Saddle Fit System to slide over a rider’s existing saddle, we are not changing his or her preferences for fore/aft adjustment of the rails, nor slope of the saddle,” said Chris Feucht, WTB’s manager of new …

Which local news sources did good actual reporting on the bad Texas A&M traffic study?

by David Alpert        greatergreaterwashington.org

Every two years, a research institute at Texas A&M comes out with a flawed report on traffic. Each time, other transportation analysts debunk it. But most reporters breathlessly regurgitate quotes from author Tim Lomax every time without doing any actual reporting of their own. How did our local reporters fare this year? …

The “not fooled for a minute” crowd
WAMU. Martin di Caro, one of the region’s best transportation reporters, focused his story around criticisms of the study, especially the Coalition for Smarter Growth’s. Di Caro also actually asked study author Tim Lomax about the critiques.
One criticism has been that the study’s summary talks about delay to residents, when really it’s just about car commuters. Lomax acknowledged that he doesn’t have good data on transit, bicycling, or walking, but argues it’s unfair to criticize the study for …

I saw that which you see here this morning on Facebook, expressing a sentiment which is currently somewhat accurate, pertaining to me.

The Type 1, Cat 2 : Early Bovine Exchanges

texasbikeracing.com

Rob Discher is a cat 2 cyclist, husband, and double dog owner who works in the tech industry. He rides for Austin’s 787 Realty / Mobil 1 Racing team and drinks lots of coffee. Last year, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
By Rob Discher
San Antonio-bound. I’ve lived in Texas roughly half my life, but this is the first time I’ve ever been on a train here. I’ve ridden and driven past a lot of freight movers, and I made a regular habit out of rail travel when I lived in DC, but I never have here in Texas. There’s something fantastically consistent and smooth about trains. These big machines lurch out of the station and meander like a Hank Williams song for an hour or three until they reach their destination. At its best, cycling shares a similar rhythmic sense of …

Let’s Ride! Fall Calendar of Cycling Events

by Joan Vinson        therivardreport.com

As summer give way to fall and, maybe, just maybe, the first cool front sweeps into South Texas, cyclists who have been training in 100-degree heat can look forward to a calendar of organized rides in and around San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. If we are missing any rides, please send an email to joan@rivardreport.com and we will update the list.
Roosevelt Park to Mission Espada: Saturday, Sept. 5, 8 a.m.
Looking for a nicely paced urban ride where you won’t be dropped? No registration is required for this informal 18-mile ride that will start at Roosevelt Park and turn around at Mission Espada. Cyclists can expect an easy 10-14 mph pace. This ride and many other club rides are sponsored by the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club, which offers newcomers to the …

Austin PD Tracking Bike-Related Crashes to Boost Safety

By Chris Cybulski        www.twcnews.com

Video

The Austin Police Department is trying to better understand bike use.
Earlier this year they began tracking bike-related crashes.
Before this, the city didn’t have a way to track where and when bike-related wrecks were occurring.
Officers said they hope this new effort will clue them in to where more enforcement is needed.
They’ll also give the data to the city so they can see where new bike lanes are needed.
“It is really everyone’s job to …

Polio pedal pusher recalls WTX

By Jeremy Gonzalez        www.fortstocktonpioneer.com

West Texas made an impression on Nick Hall, age 67, on his recent solo biking expedition from San Diego to St Augustine. Across the United States, including in Fort Stockton, Hall sported his Rotary Club t-shirt to raise awareness for a club project called End Polio Now.
“The bike ride was the entertainment; to end polio was the serious message,” said Hall.
Hall faced the challenges of strong wind, blowing sand, uphill slopes, thunderstorms and …

Violet Crown Trail, Phase Two progress

by The Tip        www.bikemojo.com

I ran across a city survey crew out flagging portions of Phase Two of the VCT. Stopped to chat to see what they knew.
They were along the east side of Mopac right where the natural trail comes out of The Indian Grass Prairie Preserve (just past Dolly Llamas favorite spot). He said that the trail they are flagging is going to follow the existing single track BOTH ways at that little Y. There will be trail running south along the northbound frontage road to tie into the sidewalk in front of the bank and Whataburger.
There will also be trail that will turn north, like the single track does now, then turn west under Mopac, on the south bank. There is a fun, challenging, bit of single track there now. When the new spur of the VCT comes out on the west side of Mopac, it will turn south and …

This year we have improved/safer ride routes, upgraded event shirts, a new free HEB KidZone & Bike Rodeo, to include more families and children in the event. Texbiker.net Posted on August 26, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 26, 2015

Pleasantly refreshing weather made for fantastic biking today. The “cold” front passing through yesterday lowered the temperature and the humidity today. I started biking at 11:13 at 83 degrees and 48% humidity. I am not sure how long this will last but I enjoyed it while riding the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route for 44.44 miles. This helped to make up for the shortened ride yesterday when the front chased me back home.

The wind was brutal while I rode to the east but switching to the south I picked up the speed. The 3 1/2 mile stretch riding on Old Atascocita Road from Fairlake Drive to Ramsey Road was a grind. There were places I had some wind break on my right but once I reached the pasture and grass fields it was me against the wind. Making the turn onto Ramsey Road changed the wind effect for the rest of the ride. My legs were grateful. Riding north on FM2100 I stopped at the Shell station to refill my water bottle. Previously this would have been the second stop for water and ice but with the cooler temperature I didn’t need to drink quite as much. I took a big drink and headed for Huffman. With the wind at my left rear I rode at 18 to 19 mph increasing my average speed to 15.4 mph by the time I reached the Chevron station in Huffman for a rest break. The screenshots of the weather while I stopped in Huffman.

It was 32.0 miles into the ride at the Chevron station. I got a Powerade drink and sat in the canopy shade enjoying the cool breeze eating my snacks. I checked email on my phone and read about the new SRAM eTap electronic shifting system. I might check this out. I wasn’t in a big hurry because of the school traffic timing. I rolled out towards home around 2:00 thinking this would put me at Kingwood Drive just as the school traffic hit but I got there at 2:40, 5 minutes before dismissal and Kingwood Drive was empty. I didn’t know that until after I went to the traffic light to cross.

The repair work on the W. Lake Houston Parkway bridge over the river began. The traffic was one lane while they open the median to be able to switch traffic from one bridge to another. I thought the work was going to be at night like the big flashing sign says but I guess that was for something else.

I am now at 896.14 miles for August. My goal is 956, 60 miles away. Saturday’s route at the Hotter’n Hell 100 should get past that goal. I plan on riding the 75 mile Hell’s Gate route.

Today was the 7th time I rode the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route. A comparison of the last 4 rides is below the Garmin Connect and Strava inserts. By the way you can click on those to see more details of the ride.

Houston By Bike & Bonobo

Colin Ward

I’ve been wanting to make this video for a long time. After two small crashes and a plethora of technical mishaps, it finally happened. To Bonobo, I’m very sorry for using your song “Ketto” without your permission. I hope you can forgive me. I had to use it. It’s was simply the perfect song.

Houston Chronicle        www.chron.com

As the mercury rises in Houston, so do B-Cycle rentals. That was the surprising discovery when Chronicle transportation reporter Dug Begley tallied the ridership statistics for Houston’s bicycle rental system (“Awaiting expansion, B-Cycle continues to grow in Houston,” blog.chron.com/thehighwayman, Aug. 6).
Apparently riders can tolerate a sweat, but not a chill, with cold temperatures sending ridership plummeting but high heat having little impact.
That’s hardly a problem in Houston.
Despite potholes, trash-filled bike lanes and, yes, the weather, Houstonians have taken to cycling as a part of our city’s transportation and recreation systems. As the Houston-Galveston Area Council eyes infrastructure projects for its …
