About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Racing the Rain and Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2015

Before I started today’s ride I looked at the weather radar for possible rain. The forecast was for a cold front to pass through later this afternoon. There was a glob of rain storms to the north Livingston and I figured they would move to the east like they do many times. I put on sunscreen and got dressed planning to ride the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route to the north. I left home at 11:19 with the sun shining and the temperature at 93 degrees.

After riding through Kingwood to add some miles to the route I headed to Loop 494 and US59 to begin going north. When I reached US59 I looked to the north to see some gary clouds in the distance. I still thought I could ride to New Caney but I changed how far north I was going to ride from Roman Forest Blvd to FM1485. Arriving in Porter I turned right onto FM1314 and rode to Loop 494. Once I was on Loop 494 I rode north towards the darkening sky. The further north I rode the darker the sky got. After passing New Caney High School and Eagle Drive I decided to turn around and get back home. I took Loop 494 south to Porter and then got on the southbound US59 service road keeping an eye in my mirror on the approaching line of clouds. With the wind behind me I raced to Northpark Drive. Stopping for the traffic light to change a big gust of cold wind blew through and I knew the rain wasn’t too far behind.

Taking Northpark east I cut through the Showbiz theater parking lot to reach Loop 494 to ride to Kings Manor and into Kingwood. The wind was blowing in gusts and caught my wheels at time trying to move me to the side of the street. By now I was about 4 miles from home. I continued riding as fast as I could. It started to drizzle rain and I pedaled faster trying to reach home but when I got to the Bear Branch Park the rain picked up and I went to the pavilion for shelter. The rain and wind picked up and I was glad I found shelter. That sunscreen should’ve rain repellent as the wind started blowing the rain into the pavilion I was getting chilled. A rain cape would be handy. Before I reached the pavilion while riding on Cedar Knoll a large tree (12 to 15 feet tall) fell over in the front yard of a home from the wind. It looked like the trunk was rotted.

At the pavilion several close lightening strikes hit and lots of thunder. After 15 minutes or so the wind let up and the rain slowed down. Later it stopped and I left to ride the last mile home. When I got home at 1:19 I checked the temperature and it was 73, a 20 degree drop. No wonder I was chilled. The wind was from the NNE at 26 mph with 43 mph gusts. This is why I had trouble keeping my bike pointed where I wanted it to go.

The weather radar when I got home.

8-25-2015 Weather Radar Finish

With the abbreviated ride I ended up biking 22.3 miles.

The weather should straighten out for tomorrow’s ride. I am at 851.7 miles for August and need 106 miles to hit my goal for August.

Notes from the BAC: August Edition

Austin On A Bike        austinonabike.com

Having spent much of the summer in far away (read: cooler) lands, I decided to celebrate my return to Austin and it’s sweltering summer days with a nice evening in the air conditioned bull pen of City Hall for the Bicycle Advisory Council meeting last week. While I will spare you much of the round-and-round discussion that filled much of this month’s two-hour meeting, I can tell you of a few things of particular interest:
1. So called “e-bikes”, AKA bikes with electric assist motors, should be considered bicycles and allowed on trails in parks. This sentiment appeared to be the consensus (minus one) of much of the council and those in attendance. For some reason, this conversation took a very long time, while most all in …

Schools Start and Traffic Does Too!

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2015

Another long ride today on the “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route to the east leaving home at 11:33. The late start was due to watching stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana on EuroSport.  I rode 42.68 miles with a maximum average speed of 15.4 mph. The average speed was up and down depending on stops and when I was riding into the light 5 mph breeze. It was hot again at 92 degrees when I stopped at the Huffman Chevron on the way back home and when I got home my weather station showed 97.9 degrees. Below is the screenshots when I was in Huffman.

8-24-2015 Huffman Weather 1
8-24-2015 Huffman Weather 2

Humidity is back and I could tell by the amount of sweat I produced whenever I stopped. I stopped at the Dayton Food & Fuel store at the turnaround point at FM686. Iwalked inside the store to get ice and water and I think I left a trail of sweat drippings from the door to the fountain machine and back. Worse thing was I got a phone call while I was inside and left a bigger puddle where I stood while talking.

I hope these 40+ mile rides are getting me prepared for the 75 mile route at the Hotter’n Hell 100 on Saturday. I think I am ready for the heat but the route has rolling hills and I am a flatlander. I done them many times before so they shouldn’t be a problem.

At 31.0 miles I rolled into the Chevron station in Huffman. I got there about 1:45. I wasn’t in a hurry to leave because this is the first day of school and I didn’t want to do battle with the Kingwood High School traffic on Kingwood Drive when it let out. I waited to 2:30 to leave thinking by the time I covered 9 miles it would be past the 2:45 dismissal time. I got to Kingwood Drive just before 3:00 and traffic was backed up in both directions. So much for trying to avoid this. I waited 3 to 5 minutes and finally got to the middle of Kingwood Drive where I waited another 2 to 3 minutes to get across to the north side. From there I didn’t have any other problems with school traffic getting home at 3:10.

Tomorrow’s weather looks favorable for biking until 5 PM when a chance of rain pops in. I plan on being back before that time.

Border Patrol On Hunt For More Female Agents

By Molly Hennessy-Fiske, Los Angeles Times        swtimes.com

ROMA, Texas — Border Patrol Agent Erica Sanchez was stalking immigrants on the banks of the Rio Grande, her long brown hair pulled back in a knot, her foundation and eyeliner intact despite the sweat running down her face in the 100-degree heat.
She picked her way down treacherous trails full of obstacles — downed trees, thorny branches, muddy holes. She watched for snakes too. …
