About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biker in the Grass

Texbiker.net Posted on August 4, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 4, 2015

In the continuing quest to reach my August goal I biked over 40 miles for the second day in a row. Before leaving home at 10:15 I checked my ride history on the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route to be sure I duplicated the previous rides as close as possible. I rode 43.76 miles today which is close to the other times I rode this route in 2015. Below is a comparison summary of the rides:

8-4-2015 Route Rides Comparison Summary YTD

All 4 rides are 43 miles but the decimals are different. It is tough to ride that mileage and not vary. With this ride I am at 85.91 miles for the week, 164.32 miles for the month and 4286 miles for 2015.

The weather was different today. The sky was mostly cloudy keeping the sun at bay and the temperature a few degrees lower. The humidity went up some making my perspiration more plentiful. The weather when I stopped at 32 miles into the ride at the Huffman Chevron.

8-4-2015 Huffman Weather 1
8-4-2015 Huffman Weather 2

No excitement at the Chevron station today at least while I was there. Earlier at FM2100 and Old Atascocita Road there was a biker in the grass working on his tire when I crossed over FM2100 heading toward Ramsey Road. I stopped to see if he needed any help. He thought the rough road caused the flat and was going to put a different tube in. He had his pump attached to a tube so I knew he had that covered. He said a friend of his had a flat along the same stretch of road last week and also attributed it to the rough road. Most bikers go west on Old Atascocita Road after riding east of FM2100. I agree the road is rough in the west bound lane but I haven’t had any problems with flats. My fats usually happen on the FM1960 causeway over Lake Houston with wire but I haven’t had a flat in a long time. I think the Continental Gatorskin tires are the reason for not having flats. As of today I have over 3500 miles on the pair on my rims. I am thinking about changing them at 4,000 miles. The front tire has a sidewall cut but it is not causing any problem. If it didn’t have the cut I would rotate the tires but I am not sure the front tire would survive on the back with the sidewall cut. After seeing the biker was okay I headed east on my route. Later the route went by this spot as I rode to Huffman. He was not there which is good. If he was I would be concerned since it was about 50 minutes later.

I got to Huffman about 12:30 and thought I might see the Tuesday Amtrak train but while I was at the Chevron station two freight trains went through cancelling the likelihood of the Amtrak train using the same tracks. After 30 to 35 minutes at the Chevron I headed home for the last 11+ miles. At that point my average speed was 15.1 mph before I stopped for a break and when I left it was 15.0 mph. I built it back to 15.1 mph and kept it there until the 41 mile point when I got to Kingwood Drive. From there the winding path, stop signs and general slow riding dropped it to 14.8 mph byt the time I got home at 1:56. My home weather at the end of the ride.

8-4-2015 Home Weather Finish

Tomorrow I plan on biking to the north for some variety. I hope to go 38+ miles. Today marks the 9th consecutive day of biking. I will try to keep that string going.

Fort Worthology: Bike Lane Consistency

by Kevin Buchanan        www.fwweekly.com

Fort Worth has been building out its bike plan for several years now, and it has definitely improved conditions on city streets for non-motorized transportation. There are far more designated bike lanes, especially in the central city, and the available bike parking has increased dramatically as well. As we’ve laid down the beginnings of a foundation for better biking in Fort Worth, it seems like a good time to look at how to start taking things to a higher level.
One thing in particular that stands out as a weakness of the Fort Worth bike plan is the inconsistency of …

Palo Duro-Go

by mark!        forums.mtbr.com

My 16 year old and I finally made it up to PDC last week and holy crap, if you get the chance to go, take it. We had a few set backs, my tallboy had a busted axle bolt, got the wrong bolt in, SC customer service over-nighted the bolt pack I needed to our hotel in Amarillo, got it all up and running in the hotel room and then the skies opened up with rain. Feeling pretty down about our chances, it turns out the rain completely missed the park.
Get there early in the summer, as it’s been said before, it gets damn hot there. The ranger said it averages 10 degrees hotter in the rim, take a ton of water. We had 2 gallons in the cooler and filled our camelbacks up at the …

Homes welcome HHH riders in need

by Judith McGinnis        www.timesrecordnews.com

Wichita Falls, Texas – Accommodating nieces and nephews or a grandchild or two for Hotter’ N Hell is nothing unusual for Wichita Falls families.
Opening the doors to a dozen or more unrelated HHH cyclists has become a treasured visit for local hosts like Susan Freudiger.
“We’ve had someone here as far back as about 12 years,” said Freudiger “This year we’ll have 15 riders in the house; the most we’ve had is 22. It’s kind of like a slumber party.”
Freudiger says with some of her cycling guests returning to her home year after …

Safety at White Rock Lake/Ticketing

Mindy Mashburn        greaterdallasbicyclists.com

I lead a ride at White Rock Lake every Thursday morning. This week a female Dallas police officer on her bike stopped and asked us if we were with the group that races around the lake in the mornings. We are not. She said that a complaint had made its way to Chief Brown about them – running stop signs, cutting people off, not announcing themselves, and generally riding dangerously in a fast pack. She said that they would have to start ticketing cyclists again at stop signs if the word did not get the word out to obey the rules and ride safely. Her job would then change to one in which she has to sit at a stop sign all day and give tickets, which she was not happy about. She also said that we do NOT have to put a foot down at stop signs, just slow down, look both ways, and give right of way when it is warranted.

She asked us to tell any groups we are involved in this message – so I have and you can too if you belong to other groups/clubs.

Kilgore mayor aims for texting, driving ban

By Ellen Goodacre        www.news-journal.com

Kilgore Mayor Ronnie Spradlin is reaching out to other East Texas mayors in hopes of passing a uniform region-wide ban on texting while driving.
Kilgore’s City Council considered such an ordinance about three years ago, but held off in hopes the Legislature would act. Leaders from other area cities, including Longview, also delayed local efforts while waiting on the state to act.
“We were hoping that the state would pass a statewide ban, and they have failed to do that …

Big Jackrabbit Cycle Story…

by zandoval            www.bikeforums.net

Big Texas Jackrabbit
Finally getting around to writing about my recent experience in Dalhart Texas. Dalhart is about the last big town you pass through before leaving the Texas panhandle and crossing over into New Mexico. You would not think it, but it’s an area of heavy industry in chicken, dairy, cattle farm and ranch not to mention steal (oil and gas), and wind (electricity). It’s a productive area with people working hard for whatever they have. I was there for a few weeks working the Occupational Health Care Clinic. The thing about Dalhart is that it’s out in the middle on no where, or so it would seem. They have a small lake that’s part of the Rita Blanca State park system with a six mile clay/gravel trail around it. I am not one of those cyclists that handles street traffic. Especially highways with big, BIG trucks on them. Don’t get me wrong, when you are riding the highways around Dalhart you will get plenty of friendly waves and honks from the passerby’s but it’s still a little unnerving with them zooming by at 75 plus miles an hour. If you do stop, it’s not long before you have someone offering you a ride into town.
I decided to make my rides, short and late in the evening about 20:00. Luckily I just switched my 1″ road tires on my ChroMo 80s UNIVEGA to some 1.25 Continental Touring tires. I am not a dirt rider. Not even on my motorcycle. So when I hit that six mile trail around the lake those clay/gravel, soft spots really had me twisting and turning like a real panhandle side winder. The air was good, cool, with pleasant updrafts off the water. In the whole six mile ride you may only run into a …

Trek to begin online bike sales — Dealers will assemble bikes and get a service commission

by Stephen Frothingham        www.bicycleretailer.com

MADISON, Wis. (BRAIN) — In a first for a major U.S. bike brand, Trek Bicycle will begin sales of complete bikes to consumers via its website in late September. Bikes will be shipped to the brand’s retailers — not direct to consumers — for assembly, and retailers will receive a service commission on each sale.
Trek also will begin online sales of parts & accessories from its own brands, including Bontrager and Electra, as well as other bike brands including Park Tool, Garmin, Finish Line and Burley. Trek will deliver these products direct to consumers, but local retailers will also receive a service fee.
Trek president John Burke revealed the plan Monday evening to several thousand Trek retailers at the company’s annual Trek World dealer meeting here. He said the plan had been in development for about …

Medical Emergency in Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2015

With my 956 mile goal for August I wanted to go on a ride longer than the average distance I think I will need to ride to reach it. The average based on 25 biking days is 36 miles per ride and today I rode 42.15 miles. I adjusted the “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route to add a couple of miles in Walden and at the turn around point at FM686. Rather than take the weather screen shots in Huffman like I normally do when I bike this direction I took them at the Dayton Food and Fuel store at FM686 and FM1960 after I went inside to refill my water bottle with ice and water.

8-3-2015 Dayton Weather 1
8-3-2015 Dayton Weather 2

I am off to a good start for August with 120+ miles. I plan on another 40+ mile ride tomorrow.

The weather was hot 99.9 at my home weather station at the end of the ride. The humidity was 36% which dried up my perspiration quickly as long as I was moving. When I stopped at the Dayton Food and Fuel store it started rolling down my arms but as soon as I was biking west to Huffman it dried up. The breeze was not very strong so I was able to ride at a steady pace of 16 to 18 mph. I got a decent start time leaving home at 10:14 and returning at 1:49.

8-3-2015 Home Weather Finish

At the rest stop in Huffman at the Chevron (30.4 mile point) I ate a snack and drank Powerade. The breeze under the pump canopy was pleasant drying me off before I left at 1:01. As I was getting ready to leave the Huffman VFD truck pulled into the station a man got out and as he walked around the front of the fire truck I could see both of his legs were prostheses. I never saw this before. He walked to the side of the fire truck and got a medical bag out and went inside the store. One of the ladies that work there was having a medical problem. As I stood up to finish my drink a dark gray pickup with emergency lights flashing pulled behind the fire truck. The lady who got out was wearing a Huffman VFD shirt. She went inside also. I followed a few minutes later to refill my water bottle before leaving. I could hear them talking about high blood pressure. I went back outside to start riding home. As I was about to leave the station a lady that works there pulled in. I think she is a relative of the lady who was having the medical problem.

Biking west on FM1960 I was able to raise my average speed to 15.0 mph and I kept it there until the 40 mile point. It dropped down the last 2 miles as I rode on the residential streets in Kingwood.

Today was the 9th time I biked this route. Below is a summary of the rides this year.

Cycling plans take shape

by Kirsten Crow        www.caller.com

CORPUS CHRISTI – When Michael Brodeur moved to Corpus Christi, he took up bike-riding for the first time in at least a decade.
It was a financial decision for Brodeur, a resident doctor at Christus Spohn, to ride to work and forego a second car. The investment has saved him two years’ worth of insurance and gas. It also has had other benefits.
“It’s been a pretty pleasant experience and a great form of exercise,” Brodeur said. “I feel my mind is little more clear when I ride into work.”
Brodeur would be considered a commuter cyclist.
Bicycle advocates say there are already many like Brodeur in Corpus Christi who ride for transportation or leisurely recreation, not for a …

New repair stations in Denton offer tools, tips for cyclists

By Caitlyn Jones        www.dentonrc.com

Flat tires may not be such a nightmare for Denton cyclists anymore.
The city recently installed two bike “fix-it” stations that include compressed air, screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools needed for daily wear and tear.
Both stations are along popular routes. One is in the Williams Square public parking lot on East Hickory Street near Rusty Taco, and the other resides at the MedPark A-train station at 3220 MedPark Drive, on the Denton branch of the Rail Trail.
“This kind of puts us on the map. It lets people know we’re serious about bicycling and providing stuff for people choosing to ride their bike,” said Julie …
